- Braided Shield Cable Preparation - Braided-shield cables provide a flexible method of electrically shielding a cable. The braid also adds strength to the cable. Because of this, braided-shield cables are the best choice for cables used in mobile, remote or live applications. The drawback to using a braided shield, however, is the time and effort needed to prepare the cable for attaching a connector. The standard approach is to completely unbraid the shield to free the conductors inside, and then twist the shield conductors together. An alternate method provides a cleaner way to prepare the shield without subjecting the wires to stress, and it results in a cleaner, more manageable shield conductor.

- Loudspeaker Protection and Muting - Many hi-fi amplifiers and professional power amps (and loudspeaker systems) provide some of protection, either to protect the speakers from an amp fault, and/or vice versa. The basic requirement of a speaker protector requires that any potentially dangerous DC flow to the speakers should be interrupted as quickly as possible. This project explains the principles, and shows a suitable detection method that may be applied. The circuit also includes a mute function, which leaves the speakers disconnected until the amplifier has settled, and disconnects the speakers as quickly as possible after power is removed to prevent the turn-off noises that some amps generate.

- The Engineer's Guide to Motion Compensation - This booklet will explain motion characteristics in such a way as to enable the reader select critical material to reveal tangible performance differences between motion compensation systems. Motion estimation is a complex subject which is ordinarily discussed in mathematical language. This is not appropriate here, and the new explanations which follow will use plain English to make the subject accessible to a wide range of readers. In particular a new non-mathematical explanation of the Fourier transform has been developed which is fundamental to demystifying phase correlation.

- Compliance Testing to the IEC 1000-3-2 (EN 61000-3-2) and IEC 1000-3-3 (EN 61000-3-3) Standards - Regulatory standards for ac mains phenomena are critical to maintaining the quality of ac power distribution systems. The goal of this application note is to provide an introduction to these standards as well as insight into their scope and intent. An effort has also been made to openly explore the interpretive as well as technical issues of the standards. The discussion of these issues is included to stimulate end-users who test products for compliance to consider both the interpretive and technical merit of test solutions.
