VLC media player version 2.1

VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player. A new version of VLC media player has releases a short time ago. VLC is 2.1 (codenamed “Ricewind”) is a major upgrade because it includes a new audio core, hardware decoding and encoding, port to mobile platforms, preparation for 4K Ultra-HD video and support for more formats.

The new version promises to improve both processing performance and audio fidelity. At my own tests the processing performance has increased from 2.0 series. I had an older PC where I was running VLC 1.x series because VLC 2.0 did not work smoothly on that PC (noticeable video and audio problems). Now VLC 2.1 seems to have fixed those problems. It works nicely. The update came at the right time, because Firefox just some days ago started to refuse to use VLC 1.x series plug-ins saying they are too old (not secure). My conclusion is that VLC 2.1 heads VLC to good direction and is well worth to upgrade to it.
