New Finnish high tech magazine with articles written my me

Finland has received a new technology trade magazine focusing on developing new technology: Uusi Teknologia (=new technology).  Uusi Teknologia magazine’s first issue devoted to IoT solutions, industrial, internet security and future 5G mobile solutions as well as intelligent interactive textiles. Also included are high-end oscilloscopes and a new ways to program embedded systems. The magazine is written in Finnish language, but the articles have article summary and image descriptions also in English. What’s more, you can read the magazine free of charge directly from the network (and should be able to store chapters of the magazine on your computer).

Uusi Teknologia first issue published two articles I have written: The first article is about Internet of Things security. The second article is about new ways to develop embedded systems using scripting languages.

My first article “Salaus ja tietoturva Iot-ratkaisuissa” on Internet of Things security  (pages 37-40) is largely based on material I used for seminar presentation “Salaus ja tietoturva teollisen internetin ratkaisuissa” that I prestented at Teknologia 2015 fair.  Industrial objects and the Internet in the world of information need to keep moving the machinery, computers securely, and security must be maintained. In Finland, there are still many automation systems, which almost anyone could get into, if you know the device’s IP network address. And in many other countries much more such systems that have no actual user authentication or use widely known device default passwords. Today’s Internet has a large number of connected devices with poor security, this includes connected cars, home automation devices and industrial automation systems. Improving security of IIoT requires knowledge on communications protocols, wireless communications, automation and usability expertise.

This “Salaus ja tietoturva Iot-ratkaisuissa” article article is an overview on what needs to be considered when building IIoT systems that should be safe. It says that the foundation to secure networking is to replace the existing outdated protocols replaced with safer protocols, or use them only over a VPN connection. Cryptography and information security are very important things that should be properly implemented in industrial Internet of things systems (IIoT).  Also if the device connected to the Internet to control some critical function, should be on actual network traffic and critical part of control function part to be reliably separated from the other so that network attack can’t disturb the critical functions.

My second article “Komentosarjakielet helpottavat sulautetuissa” (pages 46-49) is about new ways to develop embedded systems using scripting languages. Nowadays, embedded system typically found in the amount of memory and processing power, the internal application should think again. In many applications sensible to introduce new tools for successful faster and easier software development. Scripting languages allows easier application development in many areas: For example web user interface design is much easier with suitable scripting language than with C. In many embedded Linux systems it makes sense to use scripting languages in addition to C/C++.  This article gives an overview on using scripting languages for embedded applications.
