3 AI misconceptions IT leaders must dispel

https://enterprisersproject.com/article/2017/12/3-ai-misconceptions-it-leaders-must-dispel?sc_cid=7016000000127ECAAY

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing many aspects of how we work and live. (How many stories did you read last week about self-driving cars and job-stealing robots? Perhaps your holiday shopping involved some AI algorithms, as well.) But despite the constant flow of news, many misconceptions about AI remain.

AI doesn’t think in our sense of the word at all, Scriffignano explains. “In many ways, it’s not really intelligence. It’s regressive.”

IT leaders should make deliberate choices about what AI can and can’t do on its own. “You have to pay attention to giving AI autonomy intentionally and not by accident,”

The chatbot wars — led by ChatGPT creator OpenAI, Bing/Sydney overlord Microsoft, and the very desperate-to-catch-up Google — are on, with Silicon Valley behemoths and the industry’s biggest investors rushing to throw major dollars behind language-generating systems.

But according to a pair of experts in a scathing essay in Salon, the frothy hype cycle surrounding chatbot AIs is doomed to be what investors fear most: a bubble. When popped, they argue, it’ll reveal Large Language Model (LLM) -powered systems to be much less paradigm-shifting technologies, and really just a whole lot of smoke and mirrors.

CHATGPT IS NOW FINDING BUGS IN DATABASES
    https://celerdata.com/blog/chatgpt-is-now-finding-bugs-in-databases

ChatGPT has dominated the public’s attention over the last few months, creating entirely new industries, tools, and changes to how we work almost overnight. Millions of users across the globe have put ChatGPT’s AI power to the test, and while there’s no shortage of limitations with the software, some fairly amazing use cases are starting to show up.

One such use case is ChatGPT’s ability to make database testing more efficient. Recently, contributors to the open source Linux project StarRocks put ChatGPT to the test against several popular automated testing tools to see what advantages, if any, the AI-powered chat platform could offer.

A mother whose teen son struggles with a learning disability urged him to turn in an essay written by ChatGPT — and she makes a compelling case for the tech’s helpfulness in that context.

Although her high school senior son was relinquished from additional support from his education system in middle school, his mother, Karen Brewer, wrote for Medium’s “Illumination” vertical that nevertheless, “writing his thoughts on paper is still an extremely challenging task for him.”

    https://futurism.com/the-byte/gpt-4-exam-scores

OpenAI’s GPT-4 is officially here — and the numbers speak for themselves.

Hot on the heels of its announcement, OpenAI has released a bunch of stats about its even-more-powerful new large language model — and reader, we’re both spooked and skeptical in equal measures.

According to a new white paper, the algorithm got incredibly good scores on a number of exams including the Bar, the LSATs, the SAT’s Reading and Math tests, and the GRE.

To put these high scores in perspective, it’s important to look at the average scores for all the exams GPT-4 appears to have aced. For instance, the LLM got a 163 out of 180 on the LSAT, which is more than ten points higher than the median score of 152 (per the Princeton Review) and, perhaps even more remarkably, almost twice as good as its predecessor, GPT-3.

Coding Sucks Anyway — Matt Welsh on the End of Programming
    https://thenewstack.io/coding-sucks-anyway-matt-welsh-on-the-end-of-programming/

A former professor of computer science and Google engineering lead thinks generative AI will lead to the end of programming within 3 years.

This month Matt Welsh, a former professor of computer science at Harvard, spoke at a virtual meetup of the Chicago Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), explaining his thesis that ChatGPI and GitHub Copilot represent the beginning of the end of programming.

Welsh thinks programming is on the cusp of changing from a job that humans do, to one that robots will do, thanks to technologies like ChatGPT and Copilot. In his view, programmers will need to evolve into “teachers” of AI programs — or perhaps product managers or code reviewers, the two human roles he thinks are relatively safe from the robots. But don’t expect to continue your career as an actual programmer, he says, because machines are taking over that role.

Welsh has founded a startup to prove his theory. Fixie.ai, which he is the CEO of, is a self-described “automation platform for large language models.” It aims to help businesses program custom software using, you guessed it, ChatGPT and similar machine learning programs.

    ‘Computer Science is Doomed’
Welsh came off the top rope at the start of his presentation, claiming that “computer science is doomed.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warns that other A.I. developers working on ChatGPT-like tools won’t put on safety limits—and the clock is ticking
    https://lm.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftrib.al%2FgYaIxv8&h=AT1tCuc4Bg4B-T1_4FODNiUx5YYDE_AJFv7_ktb1KUDctbksvI1PF7-upIm_hrcvCB8FBDcbMskRLH2HtVPBmwSuwxm1OwQ64w3zgwQLW_IZRIWD12vH84jmOPNri-LUsA

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes artificial intelligence has incredible upside for society, but he also worries about how bad actors will use the technology.

In an ABC News interview this week, he warned “there will be other people who don’t put some of the safety limits that we put on.”

OpenAI released its A.I. chatbot ChatGPT to the public in late November, and this week it unveiled a more capable successor called GPT-4.

“It’s competitive out there,” OpenAI cofounder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever told The Verge in an interview published this week. “GPT-4 is not easy to develop…there are many many companies who want to do the same thing, so from a competitive side, you can see this as a maturation of the field.”

Sutskever was explaining OpenAI’s decision (with safety being another reason) to reveal little about GPT-4’s inner workings, causing many to question whether the name “OpenAI” still made sense. But his comments were also an acknowledgment of the slew of rivals nipping at OpenAI’s heels.

“A thing that I do worry about is … we’re not going to be the only creator of this technology,” he said. “There will be other people who don’t put some of the safety limits that we put on it. Society, I think, has a limited amount of time to figure out how to react to that, how to regulate that, how to handle it.”

OpenAI was established in 2015 as a nonprofit focused on the safe and transparent development of A.I. It switched to a hybrid “capped-profit” model in 2019, with Microsoft becoming a major investor (how much it can profit from the arrangement is capped, as the name of the model suggests).

Tekoäly näkyy opiskelijoiden vastauksissa, eikä sitä aiota kieltää peruskoulussakaan – “Oppilaat tuovat sen kouluun joka tapauksessa”
    https://www.mtvuutiset.fi/artikkeli/tekoaly-nakyy-opiskelijoiden-vastauksissa-eika-sita-aiota-kieltaa-peruskoulussakaan-oppilaat-tuovat-sen-kouluun-joka-tapauksessa/8657560#gs.sgbjmk
