3 AI misconceptions IT leaders must dispel

https://enterprisersproject.com/article/2017/12/3-ai-misconceptions-it-leaders-must-dispel?sc_cid=7016000000127ECAAY

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing many aspects of how we work and live. (How many stories did you read last week about self-driving cars and job-stealing robots? Perhaps your holiday shopping involved some AI algorithms, as well.) But despite the constant flow of news, many misconceptions about AI remain.

AI doesn’t think in our sense of the word at all, Scriffignano explains. “In many ways, it’s not really intelligence. It’s regressive.”

IT leaders should make deliberate choices about what AI can and can’t do on its own. “You have to pay attention to giving AI autonomy intentionally and not by accident,”

Google is taking its first steps toward combating the potential for misinformation arising from AI-generated images. Complementing its announcements at its I/O developer event this afternoon, the company also introduced two new features coming to Google Search that aim to help people better understand the content and the context of the image they’re viewing in the search results. This includes the addition of more background information about the image itself within an “About this image” feature, as well as new markup in the file itself that will allow images to be labeled as “AI-generated.”

At its annual I/O conference, Google unveiled PaLM 2, the successor to its PaLM large language model for understanding and generating multilingual text. Google claims that it’s a significant improvement over its predecessor and that it even bests OpenAI’s GPT-4, depending on the task at hand.

But it’s far from a panacea.

Absent some hands-on time with PaLM 2, we only have the accompanying Google-authored research paper to go by. But despite some opaqueness where it concerns PaLM 2’s technical specs, the paper is forthcoming about many of the model’s major limitations.

    https://9to5google.com/2023/05/10/google-palm-2/

Google today announced PaLM 2, with improved multilingual, reasoning, and coding capabilities. This “next generation language model” is faster, more efficient, and powers 25 first-party products and features.

In 2022, Google announced the Pathways Language Model (or PaLM) with a “Pathways” AI architecture that can “train a single model to do thousands or millions of things.”

PaLM 2 features improved “multilinguality” as it has been “more heavily trained on multilingual text” across over 100 languages. This results in a “significantly improved” ability to understand, generate, and translate nuanced text like idioms, poems, and riddles.

In terms of reasoning, PaLM 2’s dataset includes scientific papers and web pages with mathematical expressions for “improved capabilities in logic, common sense reasoning, and mathematics.”

Caryn Marjorie, a Snapchat influencer, has launched a voice-based, AI-powered chatbot of herself.
Subscribers will be able to pay $1 per minute to chat with CarynAI, which uses OpenAI’s GPT-4 API.
Marjorie anticipates being able to earn up to $5 million a month from it, per Fortune.

Caryn Marjorie, 23, has more than 1.8 million followers on Snapchat. But her virtual copy — an AI-powered, voice-based chatbot called CarynAI — already has more than 1,000 paying subscribers.

Fortune was the first to report on CarynAI, a chatbot that was described as a “virtual girlfriend” and charged users $1 a minute to chat with it.

CarynAI launched as a beta test earlier this month and generated $71,610 in revenue in about a week, almost entirely from men, Fortune reported, citing an income statement provided by the influencer’s business manager.

With the advent of AI chatbots, the ethics of parasocial relationships just keep getting murkier.

Introducing: CarynAI, a voice-based chatbot that was trained to mimic a human influencer to become your artificial girlfriend. And at just $1 per minute, it’s an absolute steal.

Yes, you read that right. As Fortune reports, CarynAI is the digital extension of 23-year-old influencer Caryn Marjorie, who created a virtual version of herself with the help of AI firm Forever Voices and OpenAI’s GPT-4.

“Whether you need somebody to be comforting or loving, or you just want to rant about something that happened at school or at work, CarynAI will always be there for you,” Marjorie told Fortune.

In many ways, Marjorie’s new venture is reminiscent of the 2013 movie “Her,” in which a man develops an intimate relationship with an AI assistant’s female voice.

The parallels between the two are pretty tangible. According to Fortune, conversations with CarynAI range from chats about the future to sharing “intimate feelings” — and, yes, engaging in sexual conversations as well.

As it stands, CarynAI already has over 1,000 paying customers. Within a week, the app reportedly raked in over $71,610 from a user base that’s 99 percent men.

Meta announces generative AI features for advertisers
    https://techcrunch.com/2023/05/11/meta-announces-generative-ai-features-for-advertisers/

Meta today announced an AI Sandbox for advertisers to help them create alternative copies, background generation through text prompts and image cropping for Facebook or Instagram ads.

The first feature lets brands generate different variations of the same copy for different audiences while trying to keep the core message of the ad similar. The background generation feature makes it easier to create different assets for a campaign. Finally, the image cropping feature helps companies create visuals in different aspect ratios for various mediums, such as social posts, stories, or short videos like Reels.

The company said that these features are available to select advertisers at the moment and it will expand access to more advertisers in July.

“Currently, we’re working with a small group of advertisers in order to quickly gather feedback that we can use to make these products even better. In July, we will begin gradually expanding access to more advertisers with plans to add some of these features into our products later this year,” it said in a blog post.

Meta’s announcement comes after the company’s CTO Andrew Bosworth said last month that the company was looking to use generative AI tech for ads.

When we talk about artificial intelligence, we rely on metaphor, as we always do when dealing with something new and unfamiliar. Metaphors are, by their nature, imperfect, but we still need to choose them carefully, because bad ones can lead us astray. So, I would like to propose another metaphor for the risks of artificial intelligence. I suggest that we think about A.I. as a management-consulting firm, along the lines of McKinsey & Company. Firms like McKinsey are hired for a wide variety of reasons, and A.I. systems are used for many reasons, too. But the similarities between McKinseya consulting firm that works with ninety per cent of the Fortune 100and A.I. are also clear

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/chatgpt-bard-bing-ai-political-beliefs-151a0fe4?mod=djemalertNEWS

When we ask ChatGPT or another bot to draft a memo, email, or presentation, we think these artificial-intelligence assistants are doing our bidding. A growing body of research shows that they also can change our thinking—without our knowing.

One of the latest studies in this vein, from researchers spread across the globe, found that when subjects were asked to use an AI to help them write an essay, that AI could nudge them to write an essay either for or against a particular view, depending on the bias of the algorithm. Performing this exercise also measurably influenced the subjects’ opinions on the topic, after the exercise.

“You may not even know that you are being influenced,” says Mor Naaman, a professor in the information science department at Cornell University, and the senior author of the paper. He calls this phenomenon “latent persuasion.”

These studies raise an alarming prospect: As AI makes us more productive, it may also alter our opinions in subtle and unanticipated ways. This influence may be more akin to the way humans sway one another through collaboration and social norms, than to the kind of mass-media and social media influence we’re familiar with.

    3D Design With Text-Based AI
    https://hackaday.com/2023/05/12/3d-design-with-text-based-ai/

Generative AI is the new thing right now, proving to be a useful tool both for professional programmers, writers of high school essays and all kinds of other applications in between. It’s also been shown to be effective in generating images, as the DALL-E program has demonstrated with its impressive image-creating abilities. It should surprise no one as this type of AI continues to make in-roads into other areas, this time with a program from OpenAI called Shap-E which can render 3D images.

Like most of OpenAI’s offerings, this takes plain language as its input and can generate relatively simple 3D models with this text. The examples given by OpenAI include some bizarre models using text prompts such as a chair shaped like an avocado or an airplane that looks like a banana. It can generate textured meshes and neural radiance fields, both of which have various advantages when it comes to available computing power, training methods, and other considerations. The 3D models that it is able to generate have a Super Nintendo-style feel to them but we can only expect this technology to grow exponentially like other AI has been doing lately.

The pandemic may be over, but the demand for nonhuman workers in health care, food service and other fields is here to stay

Robots have been used for years in factories and warehouses—at firms such as Boeing, where they help build planes, and Amazon, whose army of robots sorts packages. Many of these devices are just delivery tugs or mechanical arms programmed to handle repetitive tasks. The pandemic accelerated demand for a different class of machines—some with digital “faces” and speech capability—in retail and service sectors, where they perform with, or in close proximity to, employees and customers.

Every nurse I interviewed was negative, to some degree, about Moxi. The major concern was that it wasted money that could be used for hiring people and paying them more. Patients, on the other hand, were amused and moderately entertained by seeing a robot gliding down the halls. Hospital administrators seemed generally enthusiastic, emphasizing that Moxi’s mission is to handle menial tasks, leaving nurses more time to focus on actual patient care.

Stock prices on rise as investors factor in anticipated recovery, demand from AI

TOKYO — Seven out of the nine top chipmaking equipment manufacturers are likely to log a sales decline in the current quarter as client companies rein in capacity investment in the face of a worsening semiconductor market.

But despite the downbeat forecast, their stock prices have been on the rise, reflecting investor hopes for generative artificial intelligence and the bottoming out of the market.

Applied Materials of the U.S. announced Thursday that sales for the May-July quarter would likely be $5.75 billion to $6.55 billion, forecasting a range between a 12% decline and a slight increase. The decline would be its first since the August-October quarter of 2019.

In all, analysts expect a sales decline at seven out of the nine companies in the April-June (or May-July) quarter, including Lam Research of the U.S. and Japan’s Tokyo Electron, in a clear sign of market deterioration from the previous quarter when six players reported revenue growth.

Slowing investment by chip manufacturers is the main reason behind the lackluster earnings. Memory chipmakers, in particular, have been hit hard by the slump in demand for smartphones and servers as well as plummeting prices.

“Measured as a percentage of total wafer fab equipment, memory spending is tracking at its lowest level in more than a decade,” Applied Materials CEO Gary Dickerson said during an earnings call on Thursday.

    AI’m With Stupid

Robotics researcher and AI expert Rodney Brooks is arguing that we’ve been vastly overestimating OpenAI’s large language models, on which its blockbuster chatbot ChatGPT is based on.

In a terrific interview with IEEE Spectrum, Brooks argues that these tools are a lot stupider than we realize, not to mention a very far cry from being able to compete with humans at any given task on an intellectual level. Overall, he says, we’re guilty of a lot of sins of poorly predicting the future of AI.
