Emergency over coronavirus

I am living in the middle of the emergency over coronavirus in Finland. Due this reason the update cycle to make posting to this blog could be slowed down.

The Finnish government announced on Monday nationwide school closures in order to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. Read more on the following aricles:

Facebook changes misinfo rules to allow posts claiming COVID-19 is man-made
    https://techcrunch.com/2021/05/28/facebook-covid-man-made-lab-theory/

Facebook made a few noteworthy changes to its misinformation policies this week, including the news that the company will now allow claims that COVID was created by humans — a theory that contradicts the previously prevailing assumption that humans picked up the virus naturally from animals.

“In light of ongoing investigations into the origin of COVID-19 and in consultation with public health experts, we will no longer remove the claim that COVID-19 is man-made from our apps,” a Facebook spokesperson told TechCrunch. “We’re continuing to work with health experts to keep pace with the evolving nature of the pandemic and regularly update our policies as new facts and trends emerge.”

Why Is The COVID Lab Leak Theory Suddenly Gaining So Much Attention?
    https://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/why-is-the-covid-lab-leak-theory-suddenly-gaining-so-much-attention/

Earlier this week, President Biden tasked US intelligence officials with determining once and for all how the COVID-19 pandemic began. More specifically, he has requested clarification on whether the virus emerged as a result of zoonotic spillover – meaning it jumped from an animal host into the human population – or as a consequence of a leak from a laboratory in Wuhan, China.

Outside of social media, no one is actually saying that the SARS-CoV-2 virus came from a laboratory. Back in May 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) concluded that such a scenario was “extremely unlikely,” and that the pathogen most probably jumped from bats to humans, with the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan being the point of the first transmission.

Nearly Half Of Americans Believe Covid-19 Leaked From Chinese Lab, Poll Finds
    https://www.forbes.com/sites/jackbrewster/2021/06/09/nearly-half-of-americans-believe-covid-19-leaked-from-chinese-lab-poll-finds/

In a decisive pivot from last year, a solid plurality of Americans now believe Covid-19 leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China, a new poll finds—a sign the renewed interest in the possibility among experts and lawmakers has had a cascading effect on public opinion.

Roughly 46% of U.S. adults think Covid originated with a lab leak, a Morning Consult survey found, while 26% believe the virus began naturally, and 28% say they don’t know or have no opinion.

The poll of 2,200 adults, which was conducted June 4-7, shows Americans are starkly divided along party lines on the question: a whopping 70% of Republicans believe in the lab leak theory, while just 41% of independents and 32% of Democrats say the same.

More people have died of COVID-19 already this year than the whole of 2020.

2021 Has Already Seen More COVID-19 Deaths Than All Of 2020
    https://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/2021-has-already-seen-more-covid19-deaths-than-all-of-2020/

There were 1.88 million COVID-19 deaths reported in 2020. According to Johns Hopkins University data analyzed by The Wall Street Journal, the total COVID-19 death toll for 2021 passed this milestone on Thursday, June 10. As of today, June 11, the number of COVID-19 deaths stands at 3,775,180.

Parts of North America and Europe saw a startling rise in cases at the start of 2021 due to new variants. While many of these countries are now starting to see declining deaths, partially thanks to their vaccine program, the pandemic has continued to rage in parts of Asia and Latin America.

Many of the deaths seen in 2021 have come from India, which continues to have the highest 7-point moving average of new cases by a significant margin.

Much of this disastrous wave in India is being driven by the Delta variant, first identified in India, which has been estimated to be 60 percent more transmissible than other variants and more resistant to vaccines.

Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and a number of other South American nations are still suffering from a sky-high number of cases. This can also partially be explained by a troublesome variant (in this case, the Gamma variant, first identified in Brazil).

The U.S. surpassed 600,000 deaths from Covid-19 on Tuesday, a bleak reminder that Americans are still dying despite progress from vaccination campaigns and decreasing death rates, while inoculation gains could be at risk from persistent levels of vaccine hesitancy and dangerous variants of the virus.

The U.S. Covid-19 death count reached 600,039 deaths Tuesday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, a number that totals roughly the population of Wyoming.

There were 12,710 new cases and 170 deaths reported Tuesday, according to Johns Hopkins.

WHO Urges Fully Vaccinated People To Continue Wearing Masks As Delta Variant Spreads—But No Word From CDC

World Health Organization (WHO) officials stressed Friday the need for fully vaccinated people to “continue to be appropriately cautious” and keep up with social distancing measures like mask wearing as the highly infectious Delta variant of the coronavirus becomes increasingly dominant in the U.S. and spurs new Covid-19 surges around the world—including in highly vaccinated countries.

The Delta variant, which was first identified in India and is more infectious than previous coronavirus strains, is now responsible for approximately 10% of coronavirus infections in the U.S. as of June 5 and has caused new Covid-19 outbreaks in such countries as the United Kingdom, Australia and Israel.

The variant’s spread means people should follow public health measures like mask wearing, frequent sanitizing and social distancing “with much more care,” Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO’s World Emergencies Programme, said at a press briefing Friday, saying the Delta strain should make the world “more cautious, more diligent, and more dedicated to” following those protocols.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO technical lead on Covid-19, said while vaccines are “incredibly effective at preventing severe disease and death” including against the Delta variant, the strain is a “dangerous variant” and large events taking place as the variant spreads “will have consequences.”

With the recent re-emergence of the so-called “lab-leak theory” of the pandemic’s origin, these findings add yet one more level of intrigue to the fiercely controversial issue.

How Did COVID-19 Spread So Quickly? It’s Highly Adapted To Infect Humans, Say Researchers
    https://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/how-did-covid19-spread-so-quickly-its-highly-adapted-to-infect-humans-say-researchers/

In the last few days of 2019, reports started coming out of China of a mysterious “viral pneumonia” spreading through the city of Wuhan. Less than 75 days later, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared this illness, now known to be the COVID-19 coronavirus, a pandemic.

Scientific consensus settled on a theory of zoonotic transmission, with an unfortunate horseshoe bat acting as patient zero. But the question remained: how did COVID-19 take over the planet so quickly?

A new paper, published in the Nature journal Scientific Reports, might have the answer – as well as a puzzling set of new questions. Despite the prevailing “bat” theory of the coronavirus origins, researchers at two Australian universities have found that SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind the pandemic, is better adapted to infect humans than any other species tested.

The results were surprising: “The computer modeling found the virus’s ability to bind to the bat ACE2 protein was poor relative to its ability to bind human cells,” said co-author Professor Nikolai Petrovsky. “This argues against the virus being transmitted directly from bats to humans.”

“[I]f the virus has a natural source, it could only have come to humans via an intermediary species which has yet to be found,” he explained.

Our World in Data -tilastojen mukaan lauantaina Ruotsissa ilmaantuvuusluku oli 36,1, Suomessa 49,4, Norjassa 48,1 ja Tanskassa peräti 102,2.

Virus surge upends plans for getting workers back to offices
    https://www.seattletimes.com/business/virus-surge-upends-plans-for-companies-trickling-back-to-office/

(Bloomberg) — The resurgent coronavirus and return of mask recommendations are hampering corporate America’s plans to get back to normalcy.

Google on Wednesday said that it will push back its official office return to mid-October and require workers at its campuses to get vaccinated. Lyft Inc. postponed its return date to February, while Twitter Inc. shut its recently reopened offices. Apple Inc. is requiring masks at most U.S. stores, and Walt Disney Co. is mandating them at its Florida and California parks.

A jump in Covid-19 cases and a slowdown in vaccinations has left U.S. companies once again struggling with how to adapt to the virus, just as it seemed like shots would allow workers to return to offices and resume pre-pandemic norms. Even for employees who’ve had jabs, the highly transmissible delta variant is raising concerns of breakthrough infections, spread to unvaccinated children and broader disruptions to economic activity.

“As we see it, vaccination and strict enforcement of masks and screening protocols are all a part of focusing on the health and safety of the workplace, having our economy open and having our schools open.”

Facebook joined Google on Wednesday in requiring vaccines for workers at its campuses.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week urged fully vaccinated people to go back to wearing masks indoors in places where infections are rapidly climbing — a list includes areas such as New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The mixture of the views, the politicization of mask wearing and other uncertainties surrounding the return to office and Covid-19 risks employees thinking they need to be the “mask police” or the “vaccination police” for each other

“The employer really needs to take the onus of responsibility in what they are enforcing, so they don’t recreate that environment of mistrust around their employees,”

    Slow Return

Almost 35% of U.S. workers were back at their offices as of July 21, up from 29% at the start of June

The most important things companies can do right now is be open about the uncertainty to avoid adding to employee anxiety and creating an environment where they make costly mistakes or take unnecessary risks with the virus

”Companies have to stop pretending they know all the answers right now, this is quite literally unprecedented,” she said. “Any time you’re in new territory, you’re having to innovate. You have to try out what works and what doesn’t.”

From students to politicians, many smart people have fallen for dangerous lies spread about the new coronavirus. Why? And how can you protect yourself from misinformation?

It is a sad truth that any health crisis will spawn its own pandemic of misinformation.

In the 80s, 90s, and 2000s we saw the spread of dangerous lies about Aids – from the belief that the HIV virus was created by a government laboratory to the idea that the HIV tests were unreliable, and even the spectacularly unfounded theory that it could be treated with goat’s milk. These claims increased risky behaviour and exacerbated the crisis.

Now, we are seeing a fresh inundation of fake news – this time around the coronavirus pandemic. From Facebook to WhatsApp, frequently shared misinformation include everything from what caused the outbreak to how you can prevent becoming ill.

    https://www.iltalehti.fi/ulkomaat/a/ccde6034-307f-4cb9-94e3-3138d5aaa525

Israelissa on aloitettu jo kolmas rokotuskierros, koska aikaisempien rokotusten tarjoama suoja on heikentynyt.

Israelissa aloitettiin nopea rokotuskampanja jo joulukuussa 2020. Yli puolet väestöstä oli rokotettu tämän vuoden maaliskuun alkupuoleen mennessä.

Tartuntamäärät laskivat, koko maailma seurasi kateellisena, kun korona näytti lähes katoavan.

Tällä hetkellä Israelissa 78 prosenttia 12 vuotta täyttäneistä on saanut kaksi rokotusta, suurin osa Pfizerin valmisteella, kirjoittaa Science.

Silti korona leviää Israelissa nyt nopeammin kuin lähes missään muualla maailmassa, mitattuna kahden viikon aikana havaituista tartunnoista miljoonaa ihmistä kohden. Tämä ilmenee muun muassa Our World in Data -sivuston tiedoista

    Tuplarokotettuja sairaalaan
Yli puolet Israelissa tartunnan saaneista on kahteen kertaan rokotettuja ihmisiä. Vakavasti sairastuneista ja sairaalaan joutuneista noin 60 prosenttia on tuplarokotettuja, kirjoittaa Science.

Tartuntojen nopealle leviämiselle on kaksi pääsyytä.

    https://www.iltalehti.fi/kotimaa/a/383976f5-dbfe-4d87-b1f7-78cbd9900b89

Sosiaali- ja terveysministeriö (STM) lähetti viime viikolla aluehallintovirastoille uuden ohjauskirjeen, joka ohjeistaa avaamaan vähäriskisiä tapahtumia laajemmille yleisöille. STM ohjeistaa aveja luopumaan katsomoiden lohkomisesta ja kahden metrin turvaväleistä vähäriskisissä tapahtumissa.

Etelä-Suomen aluehallintovirasto tiedotti tänään, että nykyiset rajoitukset eivät muutu.

Husin sairaanhoitopiirin alueella tartunnanjäljitys on edelleen ruuhkautunut, tartuntaketjuista suurta osaa ei pystytä jäljittämään ja terveydenhuolto on kuormittunut, minkä vuoksi nykyiset rajoituspäätökset arvioidaan tiedotteen mukaan edelleen välttämättömiksi.

Tiede- ja kulttuuriministeri Antti Kurvinen kritisoi avin päätöstä ja aikoo esittää lakimuutosta, jotta tapahtumat voidaan avata.

    – Kulttuurialan tilanne on kohtuuton ja epäreilu. Suomea on voitava avata.

C.1.2, Potential New COVID Variant Of Interest, Identified In South Africa
    https://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/c12-potential-new-covid-variant-of-interest-identified-in-south-africa/

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases in South Africa has reported the detection of a new potential variant of interest of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Currently known as C.1.2, the variant was found in all the provinces of the African country as well as abroad but with low frequencies. Less than two percent of all genomes are from this lineage.

There are currently no major concerns about this new variant but there are reasons why scientists want to keep an eye on it. This lineage possesses similar mutations to those seen in both variants of interest (VOI) and variants of concern (VOC). It shares a few common mutations with the Beta and Delta variants, but also new mutations.

As reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), there are currently four VOC, named Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta, as well as four VOIs, Eta, Iota, Kappa, and Lambda in circulation globally. Alpha, Beta, and Delta are the ones that had the most impact around the world in terms of infection. In particular, Delta has now become the dominant

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said it’s keeping a close eye on a new COVID-19 “variant of interest” (VOI) known as Mu.

The Mu variant, aka B.1.621 and B.1.621.1, was first identified in Colombia in January 2021, according to the WHO. Since then, there have been a few sporadic reports of cases of the Mu variant around the globe, combined with some larger outbreaks from other countries in South America and Europe.

Asiantuntijakaan ei enää halua puhua koronapassista: Suomi on jälkijunassa
Koronapassiesityksen pitäisi tulla hallitukselta näinä päivinä. Mielipiteet asiaa kohtaan ovat kääntyneet melko nuiviksi.
    https://www.iltalehti.fi/koronavirus/a/5a66444b-7745-4ba0-95b4-841ebcea79d9

    Suomessa valmistellaan edelleen koronapassia.

    – Nähdäkseni Suomen sisällä puhutaan väliaikaisesta ratkaisusta, jonka tavoite on mahdollistaa kulttuuri.

Tanskassa luovuttiin rokotepassivaatimuksesta yökerhojen ovilla viime viikolla.

Britannian hallitus ilmoitti luopuvansa rokotepassista Englannin osalta toissa päivänä. Virossa koronapassin kysely on ilmeisen leväperäistä.

    https://www.iltalehti.fi/kotimaa/a/d071e8ad-0aa1-40f7-ab44-2a9cefb6b8ed
