I was had planned to do a long post on self-driving cars a quite long time. I was planning to do one this spring, but I might not do that, because it seems that predictions that self-driving cars would be here in 2020 were far too rosy. Five years ago, several companies including Nissan and Toyota promised self-driving cars in 2020. So it may be wise to take any new forecasts with a grain of salt. Hare is a worth to check out article of the current status of self-driving cars:
Surprise! 2020 Is Not the Year for Self-Driving Cars
https://spectrum.ieee.org/transportation/self-driving/surprise-2020-is-not-the-year-for-selfdriving-cars
In March, because of the coronavirus, self-driving car companies, including Argo, Aurora, Cruise, Pony, and Waymo, suspended vehicle testing and operations that involved a human driver. Around the same time, Waymo and Ford released open data sets of information collected during autonomous-vehicle tests and challenged developers to use them to come up with faster and smarter self-driving algorithms.
It seems that the self-driving car industry still hopes to make meaningful progress on autonomous vehicles (AVs) this year, but the industry is slowed by the pandemic and facing a set of very hard problems that have gotten no easier to solve over the years.

All major tech players, companies from other industries, and startups whose names we’re just learning are working on some or all of the new major building blocks of the automotive future. Oftentimes, together with partners.
For example, Continental has developed a modular platform for automotive architecture using Infineon’s AURIX TC4x microcontroller. The AURIX TC4x family of 28-nm MCUs targets e-mobility, automotive driver-assistance systems (ADAS), electrical/electronics (E/E) architectures, and artificial-intelligence (AI) applications.
The MCU features the 32-bit TriCore 1.8, along with scalable performance enhancements from the AURIX accelerator suite. The new scalable family provides an upward migration path from Infineon’s AURIXTC3x MCU family.
This next-generation AURIX increases computing capabilities with a SIMD vector DSP called a parallel processing unit (PPU). The PPU has advantages over traditional CPUs in relation to matrix operation acceleration, data processing, neural-network-based algorithms, and high-speed control implementations. The scalable family concept allows for a common software architecture said to enable significant platform software savings.

What’s going into the new hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Creation and manufacturing of the fuel-cell stack.
Details about BMW’s new manufacturing facility.
Ground zero in the war to win the hearts and minds of car buyers is finding a viable alternative to fossil-fuel-powered vehicles. Hydrogen offers potential as a future energy source and can become a long-term technology option for emission-free mobility, alongside battery-electric power.
To that end, and in a peacock-like spreading of its hydrogen feathers, the BMW Group has unveiled the first vehicles in a hydrogen pilot fleet that will go into service this year after four years of development work.
The fleet of under 100 vehicles will be employed internationally for demonstration and trial purposes for various regulatory bodies and marketing endeavors. In particular, BMW needs to convince lawmakers that hydrogen is a viable alternative to electric technology.
This active driving experience will be the first chance for people not involved in the development process to gain a direct impression of what the BMW iX5 Hydrogen has to offer. Only a small handful will come to the United States, in part because unlike Europe and parts of Asia, hydrogen infrastructure can’t be found outside of California.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are rolling toward the future, but the path isn’t without obstacles. Range anxiety persists—no driver wants to experience an unexpected dead battery when miles from the nearest charging station. And initial EV costs remain high in contrast to conventional internal-combustion-engine (ICE) vehicles. Fortunately, advanced semiconductors are arriving on the scene to help overcome these obstacles.
EVs are Here to Stay
Mark Ng, who leads Texas Instruments’ hybrid-EV (HEV) and EV powertrain business, sees EVs not as cars with batteries and electric motors, but rather as big electronic devices climbing the same innovation curve that has transformed communications, computing, and personal-electronics markets. Ng cites several specific innovations:
Advanced battery-management systems (BMSs) help drivers overcome concerns about range, safety, and reliability.
Onboard chargers deliver optimal voltages and currents to each battery cell while avoiding the overcharging or undercharging that can limit battery life.
Gate drivers with adjustable gate-drive strength enable traction inverters to optimize energy usage based on road conditions and driving style.
Power-management technologies provide high levels of functional safety, while sensors and microcontrollers help drivers cope with sudden hazards.
Ng adds that new technologies make EVs more affordable as manufacturers move toward zone-control architectures, integrated powertrains, wireless BMSs, and intelligent battery junction boxes.

April 26 (Reuters) – A California judge on Wednesday ordered Tesla CEO Elon Musk to be interviewed under oath about whether he made certain statements regarding the safety and capabilities of the carmaker’s Autopilot features.
The ruling, first reported by Reuters, came in a lawsuit filed by the family of Walter Huang against Tesla in Santa Clara Superior Court, over a car crash which killed the Apple engineer in 2018. Tesla’s lawyers has said Musk cannot recall the details of his statements that the plaintiffs want to ask him about, and that the billionaire celebrity CEO is often the subject of convincing “deepfake” videos.
Huang’s family argues Tesla’s partially automated driving software failed. The carmaker contends Huang was playing a videogame on his phone before the crash and disregarded vehicle warnings.

SELF-DRIVING BUS REQUIRES TWO FULL-TIME EMPLOYEES TO OPERATE
https://futurism.com/the-byte/self-driving-bus-human-operators
HOW IRONIC.
The concept of “autonomous” vehicles generally conjures up images of futuristic, driverless living rooms on wheels that lack a driver’s seat or even a steering wheel.
But, as a new “autonomous” bus pilot program in Scotland goes to show, we’re really not quite there yet.
That’s because the program requires not one but two humans to operate the buses full-time.
While UK outlets like the BBC, The Guardian, and Sky News breathlessly lead their stories on the Scottish bus line with the moniker “self-driving,” Jalopnik was the one to point out the curious caveat in its headline.
As that outlet notes, the quote-unquote autonomous bus line will feature five double-decker vehicles, operated in part by a safety driver and a bus captain who will help passengers board the bus.
In other words, “self-driving” feels like a bit of a misnomer.
Tomi Engdahl says:

Tesla is being sued by the widow of an Apple engineer who died in a 2018 car crash.
The lawsuit cites statements from Elon Musk promoting the safety of Tesla’s self-driving software.
But Tesla’s lawyers say they can’t confirm if he ever said that, because they could be deepfakes.
Tesla’s lawyers say that Elon Musk’s past statements about the safety of its self-driving feature can’t be trusted because they could be deepfakes, per court filings seen by Insider.
The electric car company is being sued by Sz Hua Huang, whose husband Walter Huang died in a car crash in 2018.
The lawsuit – which was first submitted to the Santa Clara County Superior Court in 2019 – alleges that Tesla’s autopilot feature was defective, and accelerated Huang’s car into a concrete barrier after misreading highway lane lines.
Per Reuters, that includes a speech from a 2016 conference, when he said: “A Model S and Model X, at this point, can drive autonomously with greater safety than a person right now.”
But Tesla’s lawyers say they don’t know whether or not Musk actually said any of those things.
“At first glance it might seem unusual that Tesla could not admit or deny the authenticity of video and audio recordings purportedly contain statements by Mr. Musk,” they wrote in an April 20 court filing seen by Insider.
“The reality is he, like many public figures, is the subject of many ‘deepfake’ videos and audio recordings that purport to show him saying and doing things he never actually said or did.”
On Wednesday, Judge Evette Pennypacker said these arguments were “deeply troubling” and tentatively ordered Musk to be interviewed under oath for three hours about whether he made the statements, Reuters reported.

Auton OBD-vianlukuun tulee yksi standardi lisää
https://etn.fi/index.php/13-news/14924-auton-obd-vianlukuun-tulee-yksi-standardi-lisaeae

Ask Hackaday: Why Do Self Driving Cars Keep Causing Traffic Jams?
https://hackaday.com/2023/05/08/ask-hackaday-why-do-self-driving-cars-keep-causing-traffic-jams/
Despite what some people might tell you, self-driving cars aren’t really on the market yet. Instead, there’s a small handful of startups and big tech companies that are rapidly developing prototypes of this technology. These vehicles are furiously testing in various cities around the world.
In fact, depending on where you live, you might have noticed them out and about. Not least because many of them keep causing traffic jams, much to the frustration of their fellow road users. Let’s dive in and look at what’s going wrong.
In the event that the world is too complex to understand, or a sensor fails, or something bad happens, driverless cars typically decide to just stop. While this behavior minimises the risk of a dangerous collision or incident, it nonetheless completely frustrates every other user of the road network. In some cases, the cars have been able to get going again after some period of time. In others, teams of support staff have had to deploy to the area to recover the vehicles. In the latter case, it’s perhaps useful that many of the prototype driverless cars retain regular steering wheels and pedals, allowing humans to drive them away if all else fails.

The Qorvo PAC22140 Smart Battery Monitoring System (BMS) can monitor 10- to 20-series Li-ion, Li-polymer, and LiFePO4 battery packs. Integrating a flash-programmable MCU as well as power management, and current, voltage, and temperature sensing, plus drivers for the charge/discharge FETs, the device can communicate using UART/SPI or I2C/SMBus interfaces. The PAC22140 has an Arm Cortex-M0 with 32 kB of flash and 8 kB of SRAM with different analog and digital peripherals for the fuel-gauging algorithm and system telemetry.
