As we look back over 2021, there have certainly been some surprises, but the industry continues to take everything in its stride.

2022 tech themes: A look ahead
https://www.edn.com/2022-tech-themes-a-look-ahead/

The continued COVID-19 question mark: The world quickly and dramatically changed. It hasn’t yet reverted to pre-pandemic characteristics, and it very likely never will. Sad but true, the pandemic isn’t even close to being over yet.
Deep learning’s Cambrian moment: Look at today’s participant-rich deep learning silicon and software market, spanning both training and inference.
The ongoing importance of architecture: As the number of transistors that it’s possible to cost-effectively squeeze onto a sliver of silicon continues to slow, what you build out of those transistors becomes increasingly critical.
Open source processors’ time in the sun: There is a burgeoning RISC-V movement. It’s likely a little-known fact to some of you, that a public domain instruction set for v2 and earlier versions of the Arm ISA exists. And both Sun (with OpenSPARC) and IBM (OpenPOWER) have also joined the open-source silicon movement.
The normalization of remote work (and the “Great Resignation’s” aftershocks): I suspect that, to at least a notable degree, we won’t ever completely return to the “way it was before.” In fact, I’d wager that having a taste of a work-from-home or “hybrid” employment lifestyle is one of the key factors behind the so-called “Great Resignation” that tech and broader media alike inform me is well underway.
The metaverse starts to stir: Perhaps we’ll look back at 2022 as the year when the crossing of the chasm started in earnest.
Autonomy slowly accelerates: 2021 was another year filled with fully autonomous car tests and premature “coming soon” pronouncements; 2022 will likely be the same.
Batteries get ever denser, ever more plentiful, and ever cheaper
Space travel becomes commonplace

Global semiconductor industry forecasts for 2022
https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20211229VL205.html

“2021 is the year that everyone remembered that chip mattered,” said Wired Magazine. So far 2022 seems likely to be another fruitful year for the semiconductor industry.

World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) also has predicted that the global semiconductor market is projected to grow by 8.8 percent in 2022, to US$ 601 billion, driven by double-digit growth of the sensors and logic category. All regions and all product categories are expected to continue positive growth. Wafer foundry manufacturers sales likely to remain strong due to tight supply. 5G smartphone silicon content increase to drive demand for foundry service higher. Demand for digital transformation is here to stay, no sign of weakening for foundry service sales.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated digital transformation over the past two years. Work from home, virtual conference, and remote learning have driven up the demand for cloud computing, laptops, and servers, and hence the sales growth of related semiconductor products. Demands for CPU, GPU, AI accelerator (including FPGA) foundry services will remain strong in 2022 because trends such as virtual conferences, live streaming, and large capex of data centers are likely to stay. Long-term demands for customized chips in IoT, 5G infrastructure, HPC, and EV applications, like ADAS, autonomous driving, V2X, in-Vehicle Infotainment, will provide robust growth momentum for chip foundry services.

Chip crunch is not ending in 2022, as the lead time of some electronic components is stretching into 2023. Meanwhile, the increasing adoption of RISC-V open standard instruction set architecture is an important trend that can not be ignored. RISC-V market will double its size in 2022, compared to 2021, as it is attracting small and medium-size chip designers and manufacturers, especially those in China. RISC-V designs are now being used by Qualcomm, Samsung, Google, Microchip, Nvidia, and more.

The size of a standard mobile phone charger can be reduced by up to 40 percent when using GaN components or it can be designed to produce more power in the same size. GaN chargers are becoming the most popular charger technology for billions of devices, so it’s no wonder that European semiconductor giant STMicroelectronics is also excited about them.

Nvidia is “quietly” preparing to abandon its $40 billion acquisition of British chip designer Arm, Bloomberg News reports.
The deal has faced close scrutiny from regulators around the world, who worry it would give Nvidia an unfair advantage in the semiconductor industry.

Nvidia is “quietly” preparing to abandon its $40 billion acquisition of British chip designer Arm, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday.

The U.S. chipmaker has told partners it’s not expecting the deal to be finalized, the news agency reported, citing people familiar with the matter. SoftBank, which currently owns Arm, is ramping up preparations for Arm to go public in lieu of the Nvidia takeover, according to Bloomberg.

“We continue to hold the views expressed in detail in our latest regulatory filings — that this transaction provides an opportunity to accelerate Arm and boost competition and innovation,” a Nvidia spokesperson told CNBC by email.

A SoftBank spokesperson said, “We remain hopeful that the transaction will be approved.”

An Arm spokesperson directed CNBC to Nvidia’s statement.

Shares of Nvidia fell nearly 5% in morning trading on the news.

The deal has faced close scrutiny from regulators around the world, who worry it would give Nvidia an unfair advantage in the semiconductor industry.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission last month sued to block the transaction on antitrust grounds, while British regulators are probing the deal over concerns it would pose a threat to national security. Nvidia also faces multiple regulatory obstacles in China, where Arm has a joint venture with private equity firm Hopu Investments.

    https://etn.fi/index.php/13-news/13092-eu-vahvisti-kantansa-applen-on-siirryttaevae-usbc-laturiin

Technology Giants to Step Up Chip Design Ambitions in 2022
    Jan. 11, 2022
If 2021 is any indication, 2022 will see tech giants take even greater strides in custom chip design.
    https://www.electronicdesign.com/technologies/embedded-revolution/article/21213800/electronic-design-technology-giants-to-step-up-chip-design-ambitions-in-2022

Some of the world’s largest technology firms are shunning standard chips in favor of designing them in-house, a move that is roiling the semiconductor industry and shifting the balance of power in the sector.

Now Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Tesla, and other Silicon Valley titans are taking things to the next level in a bid to build chips with improved performance, power efficiency, and cost. The push into custom chips is a mounting threat to industry giants such as Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, and others and it has forced chip firms to respond by rolling out silicon specifically designed for customers’ needs in areas such as AI.

While tech giants revealed a wide range of custom chips for data centers and consumer devices in 2021, they are set to step up their ambitions again in 2021, taking control of even more aspects of chip design.

Apple is in the final year of swapping out the Intel chips in its Mac laptops and desktops in favor of its own in-house processors, modeled on its high-end A-series chips at the heart of its flagship iPhones and iPads.

The plan fits into the technology giant’s broader strategy of replacing many third-party parts with bespoke chips, a strategy that springs from Apple’s philosophy that owning key technologies is a major advantage over rivals. Brady Wang, a semiconductor analyst at Counterpoint Research, said the use of custom chips eases its dependence on a single supplier and helps it roll out unique, differentiated features in its devices.

Photomask Challenges At 3nm And Beyond
    https://semiengineering.com/photomask-challenges-at-3nm-and-beyond/

What are the next lithography-related issues as device scaling continues to the next process nodes?

SE: Do we really need to extend the nodes and develop 3nm technologies and beyond? Is Moore’s Law ending, or just slowing?

Fujimura: Yes, we definitely need more computing per watt and per dollar, at least in the high-performance computing sub-segment of the semiconductor market. Smart home products and other IoT devices would prefer less cost over more performance. But heavy simulation like weather forecasting, bitcoin mining, or deep learning are driving demand for 3nm and beyond. And fortunately, we will continue to scale, even though Moore’s Law is changing. This industry’s ability to collaborate across disciplines and among competitors is critical. That way, the industry can continue to make progress. It’s a good thing, because what we do at D2S depends on it. We are eagerly awaiting next-generation GPUs, CPUs, memories, communication chips and others, all of which are continuing to scale along Moore’s Law. For inverse lithography technology (ILT) in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography era, we need more powerful machines for years to come to deliver better quality wafers. We could use 10X more computing power even right now. As we need our technology to target smaller and smaller geometries, the computing demand scales up on top of that. No question about it. We need more computing power.

SE: In 2018, Samsung and TSMC inserted EUV lithography for the 7nm process node. Now, using EUV, chipmakers are producing chips at 5nm. Nonetheless, we keep hearing about mask 3D effects here. What’s that about?

Kasprowicz: In EUV, you have reflective optics. If you expose light perpendicular to a mirror, it’s going to come right back into the optical column of the EUV scanner, and it’s not going to hit the wafer. For example, when you look in the mirror, you are seeing your reflection. The same thing would happen if you did this within the EUV scanner under reflective optics. So in EUV, the light must hit the mask at an angle. Since you have it at an angle, the depth and height of the EUV mask and the absorber matter. At some point, the absorber on the mask might become too tall. In this case, it’s not just ‘X’ and ‘Y’, but now you’re looking at a ‘Z’ component to it. So when you add depth to it, you start getting some so-called shadowing effects. If it wasn’t an issue, we probably would have used a thicker absorber on the EUV masks, even at 7nm or whenever people started implementing EUV lithography. As such, we tried to get the absorber as thin as possible to mitigate those mask 3D effects. So the thinner you go with the absorber, the less of an impact you have with those 3D effects, such as shadowing, telecentricity, pitch walking, and others. But this has a lot of other implications, as well. Specifically, as you try to do OPC (optical proximity correction), where you’re using smaller features, these effects really have an impact. These get worse as the pitch tightens.

Chip shortage to persist, US says
    https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/biz/archives/2022/01/27/2003772135

The US Department of Commerce on Tuesday said that a global survey of semiconductor chip producers and users shows a shortage will persist, sparked primarily by wafer production capacity constraints.

The voluntary survey of 150 companies last fall in the supply chain confirmed “there is a significant, persistent mismatch in supply and demand for chips, and respondents did not see the problem going away in the next six months.”

US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo told reporters that the department “in a few instances didn’t really get what we needed and we’re going to go company by company and do personal engagement and get what we need.”

    IT trends for 2022
    https://espeo.eu/blog/it-trends-for-2022/?utm_campaign=Blog+promotion+campaign+Q1&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid&hsa_acc=110256112688164&hsa_cam=6307008320670&hsa_grp=6307008319470&hsa_ad=6307221051870&hsa_src=fb&hsa_net=facebook&hsa_ver=3&fbclid=IwAR1WyZufOThHiBlFCUbhovrgWyjQv4-kqgUmutPBAYfTqy2GmMCyr6btYk8

The IT industry undergoes a huge transformation every year. There are changes to the current methods and many new solutions. Fortunately, the times of the pandemic have not adversely affected the functioning of the IT market. What’s more, they have started a transformation whose development we will also see this year. What #mobile, #frontend, and #backend trends will dominate the upcoming months and how will they affect the entire industry? We posed this question to our top experts – you can find their answers in the text below.

    Web 3.0
In recent months, interest in cryptocurrencies, DeFis and NFTs has skyrocketed. It wasn’t just the increased price of Bitcoin that drove this phenomenon but also the additional features that various blockchains offer – decentralization, authenticity, and transparency of Smart Contracts. In recent years, blockchain technology has gained traction in several industries, including banking, supply chain management, public governance, and document lifecycle management. NFTs don’t have to be just images that you buy with cryptocurrencies but can also be applied more generally as a public certificate of authenticity and evolve into an entire ecosystem. Owners are also able to transfer the assets’ ownership to other users. Each time such a transaction is made, the creator is able to gain an extra premium.

If you are a Node.js developer and want to start building blockchain-oriented applications using smart contracts on Ethereum, check the following packages:

truffle – to build and test smart contracts on your local environment
web3 – to integrate your Node.js application with Ethereum blockchain

    Cloud-Native
With the growing popularity of leasing computation services commonly known as Cloud Computing, you are able to leverage the time spent on infrastructure configuration towards the development and feature improvement. If you choose Cloud Service, you will find dozens of options for connecting your software components. Recently the Docker Containers have revolutionized the way we deploy software by just wrapping up the running process into standard, pluggable form – like the unified cargo load unit.

    Serverless computing
In exchange to maintaining an up and running application, more projects’ parts can be transferred into an on-demand lifecycle often limited to single function execution. As a result of this approach, you will be able to easily leverage traffic peaks in your application – another instance would be established by the Cloud Provider. In such a case, you will only pay for already consumed resources so just for function executions.

What front end trends should we except in 2022?
Frontend development is evolving very fast. Almost every day a new framework or library appears. Some of them gain more popularity over time. A few of them may eventually become industry standard, but most will quickly fade into obscurity. Some solutions, however, have been stable for years and are still the best option for developers. Let’s go through different frontend development areas and try to point out the best tools and frameworks to use in 2022.

    Single Page Application Frameworks

We are predicting that the situation with Single Page application frameworks will be stable. There are still 3 key players in the market React, Angular, and Vue. React’s strong position as a leader is rather not threatened thanks to its common updates and a large ecosystem of ready-to-use components and hooks.

    Styling
CSS in Js solution will rise in popularity. Writing styles in JavaScript started to be a standard for SPA applications leaving far behind all preprocessor solutions like Sass or Less.

    Testing
We described the best testing frameworks to use in 2022 in another article on our blog here.

After ditching guidance at the beginning of the pandemic, Apple had plenty of reason to smile as it reported its single-largest quarterly revenue. Even in the face of pandemic uncertainty and supply chain constraints, the hardware giant blew past investor estimates, racking up an 11% growth in sales.

Things were rosy overall on the hardware front — save for iPad revenue, which failed to meet expectations and dropped 14% year-over-year. The iPhone experienced solid growth, following the late-September release of the iPhone 13 line. Sales hit $71.63 billion for the smartphone, a 9% y-o-y increase from $65.6 billion.

In 2021, the global satellite-manufacturing industry was valued at $25 billion, predicted to increase significantly over the next decade from 380 to 1,700 new satellites annually. Satellites and spacecraft need lots of electronic components and semiconductors in particular, have enabled many new applications for space technology.

Covid-enforced production stops of raw materials, the soaring demand for commercial work-from-home devices such as laptops, tablets and routers, and the continued growth of the space market, has resulted in supply-chain issues such as component shortages, extended lead-times, increased prices and in several cases, postponed launches.

In 2021, the global semiconductor market was valued at $450 billion, predicted to increase to almost $1 trillion by 2028. The world-wide space-microchip sector was valued at $2.1 billion, predicted to increase to $3.3 billion by 2028 (CAGR of 6.9%). 20% of all parts were used by launchers! Sales of space-grade integrated circuits represent less than 1% of the total semiconductor market. In the middle of an international pandemic, is it right for our industry to request more wafers when there are other, more immediate priorities?

As an OEM, my company, Spacechips, has experienced extended lead-times and increased component prices. Several prospects have required proof that we can get parts before signing a contract to guarantee on-time delivery of their space electronics.

Several space-grade semiconductor manufacturers with their own foundries have reported delays sourcing ‘raw materials’ such as ceramic packages and lead frames. Typically these are made in Asia and COVID-enforced lockdowns have impacted their availability, resulting in longer lead-times for some space-qualified integrated circuits. To make matters worse, some manufacturers are required to produce to AS9100 quality, which includes an audit for on-time delivery.

Several manufacturers have been able to buffer the shortage by keeping material and wafer stocks. To help you source parts quickly, some suppliers with their own foundries now allow you to buy parts directly from their on-line store. Websites provide an indication of inventory, date code, lot information and provided you are not procuring for a new, non-forecasted 500 satellite constellation, your parts will arrive in a few days.

Four important Wi-Fi design trends worth watching in 2022
    https://www.edn.com/four-important-wi-fi-design-trends-worth-watching-in-2022/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=link&utm_medium=EDNWeekly-20220127&oly_enc_id=2359J2998023G8W

According to Wi-Fi Alliance, the number of Wi-Fi devices in use will reach nearly 18 billion in 2022. The network of companies that manages the Wi-Fi design ecosystem also forecasts 4.4 billion devices to be shipped this year.

For the year 2022, Wi-Fi Alliance has listed four major trends outlined below.

    Wi-Fi an IoT building block

Wi-Fi, now widely acknowledged as a foundation technology for the Internet of Things (IoT) applications, is reinforcing its position with Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E

    Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E in homes and enterprises

Wi-Fi 6 reached 50% market adoption more quickly than previous Wi-Fi generations, according to Wi-Fi Alliance. Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E are now being introduced for PCs, notebooks and mesh systems while home networking, automotive and augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) applications are next in line.

    Automated frequency coordination (AFC)

The AFC systems maximize spectrum access in the 6 GHz frequency band, and they have already been adopted in Canada and the United States. Wi-Fi Alliance has released specifications and test plans for AFC system implementation, and more than a dozen AFC service providers have expressed interest.

    Wi-Fi network optimization

The growing use of video conferencing, voice-over-IP services, X Reality (XR) applications, and high definition (HD) streaming in home and enterprise environments has placed new strains on Wi-Fi networks. That inevitably calls for a new level of network optimization.

Here, Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Optimized Connectivity improves mobility when roaming within and across Wi-Fi networks and between Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Next, Wi-Fi CERTIFIED QoS Management ensures robust service delivery and a high-quality Wi-Fi user experience. Then, there are Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Data Elements, which help service providers and network managers better manage complex Wi-Fi networks.

In 2022, Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Passpoint will raise the bar for speed, security, and reliability to better manage Wi-Fi deployments in dense, city, and public areas.

The scramble for semiconductors is our era’s industrial Great Game
    https://www.ft.com/content/c77d15e3-af1f-48fb-b349-202e095a7d40

China and the US are battling over tech manufacturing supremacy — capacity as well as innovation will determine who wins

The table stakes to play in the global semiconductor market keep spiralling upwards. This month, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, one of the world’s leading chipmakers, said it would hike capital expenditure to as much as $44bn this year, almost three times more than 2019. South Korea’s Samsung Electronics had previously signalled a hefty increase in semiconductor spending; the US manufacturer Intel this week announced it would invest more than $20bn in building two chip factories in Ohio.

Apple is in a clear lead with Arm-based desktops
Let’s be frank: Apple is so far ahead of the other companies when it comes to putting a desktop platform on Arm-based silicon it isn’t even funny. The M1 has now effectively been deployed across its entire Mac product line except the Mac Pro , and we know that’s coming shortly, including the first major chip revision in the form of the M2. The M1 Pro and the M1 Max are no slouches. I have been using one on a MacBook Pro for about a week, and let me tell you, there is no way I am going back to an Intel machine after experiencing performance like this. No way, no how. You’ll need to rip it out of my dying hands.

Admittedly, Qualcomm is making progress with SQ 2, and Microsoft has made Windows 11 run better on Surface Pro X . Still, we can’t compare what those two have done getting Windows working acceptably on a single product versus what Apple has done to make Apple Silicon work across its entire product line, never mind the iPad, the iPhone, the Watch, TV, all of it, and who knows what else it’s working on.

Surface Pro X is one device, but what about the entire PC industry? HP? Dell? Lenovo? Asus? Acer? Samsung? The first three alone occupy a 64% share of the personal computer market, whereas Apple is a whole 7.6%.

The food tech market is booming.  In 2019, the worldwide food tech market was $220.3 B according to a Statista market research report. The report cites advancing technologies in the food industry and a demand for healthier, less expensive and safer food products to catapult this market upwards of $342B by 2027.

According to Pitchbook data, $18.9B was invested in food tech startups by venture capitalists in 2020. Venture capitalists like Adam Struck, CEO of Struck Capital, are betting millions that food and culinary technology will reach the most old-fashioned corner of the global restaurant industry – kitchens.

Struck believes the digitization of kitchens has completely redefined the way restaurants operate.

“From business model changes like opening up online ordering and delivery, to robotics process automation in the kitchen, to even redesigning physical spaces to accommodate safety, no-contact ordering, and contactless payments, everything is driven by consumer expectations, and businesses will have to meet these new expectations to attract patrons,” said Struck.

    Growth Spurred By Negatives
    https://semiengineering.com/growth-spurred-by-negatives/

Unexpected upside driving the semiconductor and EDA industries into 2022.

The success and health of the semiconductor industry is driven by the insatiable appetite for increasingly complex devices that impact every aspect of our lives. The number of design starts for the chips used in those devices drives the EDA industry.

But at no point in history have there been as many market segments driving innovation as there are today. Moreover, there is no indication this is about to change.

“As global demand for chips continues, the semiconductor industry can expect another growth year, though ongoing business challenges and disruption caused by the pandemic could mean more consolidation,” said Amin Shokrollhi, founder and CEO of Kandou. “New chip designs in AI and ML and other emerging market segments will be tempered by enduring capacity constraints across the entire supply chain. However, our industry is full of bright innovators who look at these challenges as opportunities.”

Two of the key drivers for this expansion are COVID and the end of Moore’s Law.

“In 2022, the realization will sink in that the free lunch is over again,”

The other driver is COVID. “The pandemic put an emphasis on digital transformation and the importance of cloud-based services,” says Timothy Vang, vice president of marketing and applications for Semtech’s Signal Integrity Products Group. “As we look to the year ahead, massive intra-data center traffic is multiplying the need for additional bandwidth and faster networking interconnection speeds. Current data consumption trends suggest an increasing demand for data and compute, and we are seeing a convergence of infrastructure for data centers and wireless as data centers move toward edge compute models that are tied directly into 5G networks.”

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/for-chip-industry-global-supply-crunch-pushes-next-target-to-1-trillion-11643544005?mod=djemalertNEWS

The semiconductor industry’s revenue is projected to log $692.5 billion in sales by 2025.

Chip companies just had their best sales year ever—charged by a global semiconductor shortage and growing demand—and industry executives expect that total to double in less than a decade, to more than $1 trillion.

The industry’s collective annual sales topped $500 billion for the first time in 2021, slightly larger than the global smartphone industry by some calculations. The pandemic accelerated digitization trends, such as people streaming movies and videogames and companies adopting all sorts of digital tools—all requiring chips.

The industry’s struggles to meet the appetite for its products caused a supply crunch that prompted national reckonings over chip production, unlocking government subsidies and a historic wave of investment. In an industry known for having boom-and-bust cycles, it has triggered a race to expand.

“It took 50 years to become a half-a-trillion-dollar industry. It’ll take just eight to 10 years to reach a trillion dollars,” said Tom Caulfield, chief executive of GlobalFoundries Inc., one of the world’s largest contract-chip makers, in an interview.

Global chip sales rose 25% in 2021 from the prior year to a record $583.5 billion, according to research firm Gartner Inc. Factories working round the clock couldn’t keep up with demand. Prolonged shortages are projected to boost the semiconductor industry’s revenue by 9% this year, Gartner said, outpacing the historic average rate of growth.

Last week, Samsung Electronics Co. expressed confidence the good times would continue for its memory-chip business, assuming component shortages and supply-chain challenges didn’t get in the way. Intel Corp. CEO Pat Gelsinger, after the company reported record sales for last year, said “2022 will only be better.”

Understanding the behemoth in Redmond teaches us valuable lessons in cloud infrastructure, startup strategy, and the future of software.

Despite its scale, Microsoft is one of the most overlooked companies in tech.

It is not a beloved consumer brand like Apple, Facebook, Amazon, or Google.

It was not a venture capital success story: Microsoft was too profitable to raise real VC money, so the founders owned 70% at IPO.

It is the oldest of FAMGA, hidden away in a different state.

But there is a lot more to Microsoft than meets the eye. If it plays its cards right, Microsoft can become the first $10T company. And startup founders would be wise to learn from the behemoth in Redmond.

This piece undertakes a daunting set of tasks: 1) understand what Microsoft is, 2) chart a path for its global domination, and 3) apply learnings from the company to the startup ecosystem.

    What is digital transformation?
    https://enterprisersproject.com/what-is-digital-transformation

Digital transformation is the integration of digital technology into all areas of a business, fundamentally changing how you operate and deliver value to customers. It’s also a cultural change that requires organizations to continually challenge the status quo, experiment, and get comfortable with failure.

Digital transformation is imperative for all businesses, from the small to the enterprise. That message comes through loud and clear from seemingly every keynote, panel discussion, article, or study related to how businesses can remain competitive and relevant as the world becomes increasingly digital. What’s not clear to many business leaders is what digital transformation means. Is it just a catchy way to say moving to the cloud? What are the specific steps we need to take? Do we need to design new jobs to help us create a framework for digital transformation, or hire a consulting service? What parts of our business strategy need to change? Is it really worth it?

A note: Some leaders feel the very term “digital transformation” has become so widely used, so broad, that it has become unhelpful. You may not love the term. But love it or not, the business mandates behind the term – to rethink old operating models, to experiment more, to become more agile in your ability to respond to customers and rivals – aren’t going anywhere.

This article aims to answer some of the common questions around digital transformation and provide clarity, specifically to CIOs and IT leaders, including lessons learned from your peers and digital transformation experts.

    Farnell: korona muutti komponenttikauppaa pysyvästi
    https://etn.fi/index.php/opinion/13132-farnell-korona-muutti-komponenttikauppaa-pysyvaesti

Koronapandemia näyttää viimein hellittävän otettaan. Kulunut kaksi vuotta on kuitenkin aiheuttanut pysyvä muutoksia elektroniikan komponenttikauppaan.

The MariaDB SPAC deal could prove to be a key test for unicorn exits
    https://techcrunch.com/2022/02/02/the-mariadb-spac-deal-could-prove-to-be-a-key-test-for-unicorn-exits/?tpcc=tcplusfacebook

The SPAC craze is slowing in the wake of myriad missteps.

Companies as far afield from one another as BuzzFeed (media), Bird (e-scooter fleets), and Dave (consumer fintech), among other recent SPAC-led debuts, have shed value since their blank-check combinations. The result of the SPAC boom looks more like a series of misses with a few hits (SoFi) than a viable exit path for highly valued technology companies that remain private.

The company in question, MariaDB, is the force behind the open source project of the same name. MariaDB the software is an “open source relational database,” as the company writes, meaning that it’s available for free. The company also has an enterprise product (subscription-based) that includes support and a hosted version of its service called SkySQL.

MariaDB is a modern open source software company with recurring revenues that is going public via a SPAC. This means that the deal will take a startup that has raised nine figures of private capital to the public markets in an expedited manner. For unicorns that are too expensive to sell themselves, but not yet mature enough for a traditional IPO, MariaDB the company is setting precedent.

Why? Because if the price that MariaDB has secured for itself through the deal is attractive, it could indicate that while many SPACs have struggled post-combination, there could still be a path for software companies with well-understood business models to lever blank-check companies to public-market debuts.

Per the company’s release, it intends to merge with Angel Pond Holdings Corporation. The transaction is a little complicated
