The Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, is held every year in Las Vegas. The world’s biggest annual consumer technology show is ready and raring to welcome back thousands of exhibitors and media to Las Vegas in the first week of the year. CES 2023 will host around 2,400 exhibitors. CES is typically where many of these technology brands pull back the curtain on their latest innovations and reveal the best of their products coming that year. At the year’s biggest tech show, we’ll see next-gen TVs, stylish laptop updates, questionable smart home tech, and a lot of strange and surprising gadgets.
Technology’s biggest trade show must go on, in spite of rough economic headwinds. CES® is the most influential tech event in the world according to it’s own words — the proving ground for breakthrough technologies and global innovators. This is where the world’s biggest brands do business and meet new partners, and the innovators hit the stage. Owned and produced by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, CES features every aspect of the tech sector.
CES officially takes place between Thursday 5th and Sunday 8th January 2023, though the ‘Media Days’ – when most product news announcements break – are being held two days prior on Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th.

At CES 2023 Gordon had a chance to chat with Seshu Madhavapeddy, the Founder and CEO at Frore Systems, about the company’s solid state cooling device – called AirJet. In this interview Gordon asks about how AirJet works and the practical benefits of solid state cooling in devices like laptops and SSDs. Could this be the future of cooling?

In the Knowles suite at CES 2023, Senior Apps Engineer Nikolay Skoborodnikov gives Senior Editor David Maliniak a look at several innovative Knowles product launches:
The V2S200D voice vibration sensor delivers clear voice-call quality in noisy environments. It isolates the low-frequency vibrations of the body and filters out, for example, wind noise, and then blends the high- and low-frequency captures to provide superior intelligibility, if not a high-fidelity rendering.
The Titan (digital) and Falcon (analog) microphones for true wireless stereo (TWS) headsets offer improved ambient noise cancellation (ANC) and transparency-mode functionality by removing some of the high-frequency hiss that often plagues such headsets.
The Robin (analog) and Cornell II (digital) microphones provide the highest-quality audio recording fidelity on consumer devices. Here, we’re talking about the difference between 10% and 1% total harmonic distortion (THD).
A demonstration of a smart washing-machine control panel fitted with voice control incorporates Knowles’ AISonic audio edge processor and SiSonic microphone array. Implementation on a Raspberry Pi means easy integration for OEMs.

Partnership to Design and Manufacture New Wi-Fi HaLow Modules
Jan. 31, 2023
Morse Micro will team up with AzureWave Technologies to develop Wi-Fi HaLow modules—low-power Wi-Fi for IoT devices.

What you’ll learn:
What is HaLow?
How this partnership will help nudge IoT forward.
General specs of the HaLow chip.
At CES 2023, Morse Micro announced a partnership with AzureWave Technologies to design and develop two Wi-Fi HaLow modules, including the smallest type, a 13- × 13-mm module. Both FCC-certified module designs feature Morse Micro’s MM6108 microchip, a fast, low-power Wi-Fi HaLow system-on-chip (SoC) that offers 10X more range than traditional Wi-Fi solutions (Fig. 1).
“Wi-Fi HaLow continues to gain momentum in the IoT ecosystem, and our collaboration with AzureWave builds on this energy as we scale and accelerate the deployment of Wi-Fi HaLow solutions worldwide,” says Morse Micro co-founder and chief executive officer Michael De Nil. “By joining forces, Morse Micro and AzureWave are poised to design and deliver best-in-class Wi-Fi HaLow solutions that will enrich existing communication modules in a broad range of IoT and consumer electronics applications.”
Since Wi-Fi HaLow is geared toward IoT devices and taps into the lower-frequency ranges, it requires Wi-Fi HaLow-enabled access points or hubs for compatibility (Fig. 2). The company is working with leading worldwide ISPs to incorporate Wi-Fi HaLow into next-gen home gateways and developing solutions that allow existing customers to introduce Wi-Fi HaLow as soon as possible.

Using a Display to Generate Sound in Electronics

By using piezoelectric amplifiers under the screen, Synaptics’ Resonate reduces power consumption and enables slimmer form factors.

Smartphones have been delivering sound since their inception, but it’s usually done using a conventional speaker. Synaptics has a technology called Synaptics Resonate that instead utilizes the glass display via haptic feedback technology (see figure). I talked with Reuben Espitia, Product Applications Engineer, about Resonate (see video above).
Synaptics was already providing haptic feedback through the screen, whereby a finger would pick up the vibration as it touched an area that the software was presenting as a button. The same piezoelectric system simply operates at a higher frequency when delivering sound—it essentially performs double duty generating sound and haptic feedback as needed.
