    Näyttötekniikan läpimurto: 12-tuumainen venyy 18-tuumaiseksi
    https://etn.fi/index.php/13-news/16940-naeyttoetekniikan-laepimurto-12-tuumainen-venyy-18-tuumaiseksi

Näytössä käytetään mikro-LED-valolähdettä, jonka koko on enintään 40 mikrometriä.

YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat remain widely used among U.S. teens; some say they’re on these sites almost constantly
    https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2024/12/12/teens-social-media-and-technology-2024/

Amid national concerns about technology’s impact on youth, many teens are as digitally connected as ever. Most teens use social media and have a smartphone, and nearly half say they’re online almost constantly, according to a new Pew Research Center survey of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 conducted Sept. 18-Oct. 10, 2024.

Overall, 73% of teens say they go on YouTube daily, making YouTube the most widely used and visited platform we asked about. This share includes 15% who describe their use as “almost constant.”

About six-in-ten visit TikTok daily. This includes 16% who report being on it almost constantly.

    By household income

Access to a home computer or a tablet is most common among teens in high-income households.

Desktop or laptop computer: 93% of teens living in households whose annual income is $75,000 or more have access to a home computer. That share falls to about eight-in-ten among those whose annual household income is $30,000 to $74,999 (81%) or less than $30,000 (78%).
Tablet computer: About three-quarters of teens whose annual household income is $75,000 or more (73%) have access to a tablet at home, compared with 64% each among teens whose annual household income is $30,000 to $74,999 and those whose household income is less than $30,000.

After a rough year, Intel says its $250 Arc B580 “Battlemage” GPU, which received near-universal praise from reviewers, has already sold out in most retailers

Intel finally notches a GPU win, confirms Arc B580 is selling out after stellar reviews / Intel says it expects to restock the GPU “weekly”.
    https://www.theverge.com/2024/12/17/24323888/intel-arc-b580-sold-out-availability

Intel is having an incredibly rough year — but at long last, the company’s discrete graphics card initiative has produced a card worth celebrating. While we haven’t managed to review it ourselves due to a fluke issue, the $250 Arc B580 “Battlemage” GPU launched to nigh-universal praise, has already sold out most everywhere, and Intel tells The Verge it’s working to ship new units every week.

“Demand for Arc B580 graphics cards is high and many retailers have sold through their initial inventory. We expect weekly inventory replenishments of the Intel Arc B580 Limited Edition graphics card and are working with partners to ensure a steady availability of choices in the market,” Intel spokesperson Mark Anthony Ramirez tells The Verge.

Mind you, in some ways the B580 is a glass of ice water in GPU hell, as its primary competition — the RTX 4060 and AMD RX 7600 — utterly failed to impress last year, following years of GPU prices that were more inflated than inflation itself. (Linus Tech Tips called the $300 4060 a “wet fart of a GPU” but considers the B580 “great and affordable” now.)

While reviewers have showed the B580 doesn’t beat the 4060 and 7600 in every game, especially for gamers who still play at 1080p resolution, it does seem to pull ahead on average, the drivers seem more mature than Intel’s earlier attempts, and the lower price and generous 12GB of video RAM make it relatively easy to recommend.

If you can find one at $250, that is — which you probably can’t, because they’ve sold out so quickly.

    https://techcrunch.com/2024/12/18/app-downloads-decline-2-3-in-2024-but-consumer-spending-grows-to-127b/

The global app economy continued to recover in 2024, after an earlier slowdown in 2022 — at least in terms of consumer spending. In 2024, global consumer spending in mobile apps and games reached $127 billion across the App Store and Google Play, up 15.7% from the prior year. However, those increases were driven by Apple’s App Store, as Google Play spending declined, according to new data from app intelligence firm Appfigures.

Though spending was up, there was another worrying sign about the overall health of the app ecosystem. This year, global app downloads were down by 2.3%, compared with 2023, reaching nearly 110 billion. This downward trend was seen across both app stores, the data indicates.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen signs that the app ecosystem’s massive growth may be finally starting to level out. As the app economy matures, the more recent focus has been on extracting revenue from the apps consumers are already using via ongoing subscriptions, rather than driving them to download new apps or paid apps.

Of note, only 5% of apps worldwide offered subscriptions last year, but they accounted for 48% of the app revenue across both app stores, Appfigures found. In addition, the top 10 earning apps globally generated 13.7% of all consumer spending, up 1.2% from 12.5% in 2023.

    Onko Kiina hylkäämässä Bluetoothia?
    https://etn.fi/index.php/13-news/16977-onko-kiina-hylkaeaemaessae-bluetoothia

Not great news for the AI industry.

According to a prominent analyst, Micron’s miss on Q3 earnings and guidance for the second quarter of next year might signal that the AI PC and smartphone supercycle isn’t happening. Most of the company’s woes stem from a weaker market than expected for memory products for PCs and smartphones, and multiple reports from other market analysis firms have pointed out that the AI PC ‘revolution’ simply isn’t happening. At least not yet.

In its latest financial report, the American memory manufacturer Micron reported Q3 revenue of $8.709 billion, somewhat below the $8.721 figure the market anticipated. Even worse, Micron’s guidance for the second quarter of 2025 was $7.9 billion instead of the $8.98 billion that Wall Street expected. At the time of writing, its stock is down over 16%.

Calling the miss and forecast a “big whiff,” semiconductor analyst Daniel Newman said in an X post that it’s not the “beginning of the end for the AI trade” and companies like Nvidia, which has grown to be one of the world’s biggest companies since AI chips took off earlier this year.

Although high-bandwidth memory (HBM) is set to become a big market for Micron, expected to grow from $16 billion in total addressable market value this year to $100 billion by 2030, Micron’s primary source of revenue today is making memory chips for PCs and smartphones.

“However, the core business is contracting as PC and smartphone shipments lag AND Micron is dealing with customer inventory that is selling off slowly leading to even lower booking/sell-through in this and the next quarter, “ Newman said. “Bad news is the AI PC and AI smartphone ‘supercycle’ has more or less been a bust.”

In 2024 and 2023, hopes were high that the PC industry would be supercharged by demand for AI PCs thanks to their new, AI-powered features. However, it seems that things didn’t shake out that way. One report by IDC Research in September said AI isn’t driving demand for AI PCs. Instead, it’s driven by the general desire to upgrade, as new chips with AI hardware also feature faster CPU and GPU cores.

Intel terminates x86S initiative — unilateral quest to de-bloat x86 instruction set comes to an end
    https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/intel-terminates-x86s-initiative-unilateral-quest-to-de-bloat-x86-instruction-set-comes-to-an-end

A pivot here, a pivot there.

In the first sign of changes to come after the formation of a new industry group, Intel has confirmed to Tom’s Hardware that it is no longer working on the x86S specification. The decision comes after Intel announced the formation of the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group, which brings together Intel, AMD, Google, and numerous other industry stalwarts to define the future of the x86 instruction set.

Intel originally announced its intentions to de-bloat the x86 instruction set by developing a simplified 64-bit mode-only x86S version, publishing a draft specification in May 2023, and then updating it to a 1.2 revision in June of this year. Now, the company says it has officially ended that initiative.

“We remain deeply committed to the x86 architecture, as demonstrated by the creation of the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group in collaboration with AMD and other industry leaders. This initiative reinforces our dedication to securing a strong future for x86, building on decades of software compatibility. While we have pivoted away from the x86S initiative, our focus remains on driving innovation and collaboration within the x86 ecosystem.” – Intel spokesperson to Tom’s Hardware.

Intel kills 64-bit only x86S designed around modern Windows and other OS
    https://www.neowin.net/news/intel-kills-64-bit-only-x86s-designed-around-modern-windows-and-other-os/

Back in May of 2023, Intel proposed a new 64-bit only “x86S” specification to streamline modern CPUs. The company wanted something to align with how most modern operating systems and apps including the likes of Windows 11 (which is 64-bit only) work. Intel reasoned that virtualization performance is currently strong enough to handle 16-bit or 32-bit scenarios.

However, after feedback and discussions with the recently formed x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group, Intel has announced that it is killing off its x86S initiative. Intel confirmed it in a statement to Tom’s Hardware. Intel however did not disclose any specific reason behind it.

For those who may not have followed, the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group was created earlier this year in October “to shape the future of x86 and foster developer innovation through a more unified set of instructions and architectural interfaces”. The consortium consists of Intel, AMD, as well as Microsoft, Google, HPE, Red Hat, and more.

Linus Torvalds is one of the luminaries of the group and interestingly, a few days back, he expressed concern, or rather annoyance, about the various x86-64 architecture levels which may be complicating things further rather than helping.
