LEDs

LED vs Halogen

I had to replace some 50W GU10 halogen bulbs. I though it could be time to check if it would be reasonable to go to use LED bulbs. I did a year or so similar checking, and at this time it did not feel reasonable because reasonably prices LED bulbs gave considerably less lights out

How LEDs are Made

Sparkfun has pretty interesting to look at article How LEDs are Made. How LEDs are Made factory tour article shows how LED supplier YunSun (Shenzhen China) makes LEDs. YunSun buys their LED dies from Taiwanese company (thin sheets contains thousands of LED dies). LED wire bonding machine attaches a hair-thin gold wire from the top

High-power LEDs don’t generate IR? True or false?

I just read an interesting article True or false? High-power LEDs don’t generate IR heat in the forward direction like a filament lamp that give something to think about on LED technology. I and you have for sure read that a high power LED emits no UV or IR and that any heat is created

Do LEDs cause blindness?

Do LEDs cause blindness? article tells that According to a study led by Dr. Celia Sánchez-Ramos, of Complutense University in Madrid, prolonged and continuous exposure to LED light might be sufficient to damage the retina. Her study, published in the journal Photochemistry and Photobiology in 2012 found that LED radiation caused significant damage to human

Dimming LED sources

I just happened to find an interesting presentation on light dimming technologies and who they work with LED lighting. Dimming LED sources: what’s working and what still needs fixing is a worth to take a look if you are into LED lighting or light controlling applications. It is a very good overview of the current

Lights and brain cells

Researchers have long been trying to discover the mysteries of the brain, as well as target areas within to control behaviors. Optogenetics might be a relatively unknown area of neuroscience. Researchers inject tiny LEDs into the brain to control behavior article tells that for almost 15 years, scientists have been experimenting with optogenetics, a new

LED vs other light sources

Efficency of some light sources (for comparison): Incandescent bulb: 10 lm/W Halogen bulb: 15 lm/W Energy saving lamp: 40 lm/W LED: 60 lm/W Source: Helen magazine Helmikuu 2013

Light-Emitting Dudes video

Fun for this Friday: Lighten up! Light-Emitting Dudes video. Light Emitting Dudes takes a team of freerunners, geared up from head to toe with LED lights, and sets them loose on the streets of Bangkok at night.

LED is 50 years old

The LED As We Know It Is 50 Years Old Today. In 1962, 50 years ago today, Nick Holonyak Jr. and his team at GE invented the Light Emitting Diode. While LED lights are almost everywhere today, their initial development was ripe with uncertainty and competitive research. A direct result of another groundbreaking technology of
