If the connection is done right then it is completely safe.

You can use spaker wire to cally line level signal. It does not
damage anything.

Byt the downside of tryign to do this is the poor shielding of
the spaker cable. This means that this cable built using speaker
wire very easily picks up any kind of interfarence 
(radio interference, humming noise, etc.) Because of the inadequate
shielding usign speaker cable for line level signal is asking for 
noise problem to your syste.. When there is no noise sources
nearby everyhting works, but when you have some noise source 
nearby (some electronics device near cable, radio transmitter nearby,
cellular phone nearby, power cables near this wire), you will 
most propably start picking up noise you don't want to hear.
