I don't know any single good book on that. I designed the interfacing
electronics between telephone line and modem electronics. I used
the datasheets from various telecom and modem component databooks
(motorola, National, Analog Devices) and national telecommmunication
terminal quipment regulations (and also european NET 4 standard).
Some telecom tranformer manufactuers's data sheet were useful
information source. I also looked the schematics and design
of some of some commercial modems made by other manufacturers
juts to get some ideas because this was my first modem design.

I have some useful links to Web documents at
http://www.hut.fi/~then/electronics/telecom.html#telephone
check especially "Optimum Hybrid Design".

If you find any useful links, I am interrested in adding them
to my page.
