The film making industry and DVD renting industry intentionally
want you to stop you from copying rented DVD material to your own
tape and watch it from there instead of renting it again
(or worse copy it to a friend).

Some companies make adaptations to certain DVD players to break
the DVD area code system (so that you can watch DVD disks from all over
the world). Some of those modifications for some DVD players have also
included options to disable Macrovision copy protection.
Some home theater people have wanted this kind of Macrovision
removing because Macrovision can sometimes cause problems with some
video projectors.
