I have also doe this myself... 
I have built some of my own stroboscope circuits and modified 
two storboscopes for remote controlling.

I have documented the methods I have used at

This could be a worth to check for all those DIY people who 
know how to solder and know how to work with circuits that carry 
dangerously high voltages!

For DMX-5123 control you need to build some DMX-512 to 
control pulses interface.
