UK telephone wiring

For UK telephone wiring details take a look at this document:

Telephone wiring in UK
http://www.epanorama.net/documents/tele ... iring.html

There are only two wires A & B (Tip & Ring) coming into a house. In the primary jack in the house is a 2 uF capacitor. On the end of this cap is the third wire. The AC ringing signal is fed to the phone on this wire and its DC counterpart. See diagram:

Code: Select all
                  ----| |------O (3)
                  |
                  |
    (B) O----------------------O (2)

    (A) O----------------------O (5)

Note: The Numbers in the diagram are the numbers engraved on the jack terminals.

You could try and obtain a 'master' type of UK 'phone socket - they are available from some companies in the UK. Or you could just add the 1.8uF capacitor yourself.

So you connect in your case two A and B wires to the phone directly. And then connect a 2 uF or so capacitor from one of the telephone wires (A or B) to the ring wire on the phone (you might need to experiment to which wire the other end od capacitor goes to make ringing to work).

wiring UK-telephone in Holland

I bought a telephone set in London and are at a loss trying to make it work in Holland, because of a wiring problem.

It is a simple handphone (Saisho 211). At the bottom there is room for a plug connected to the cord that came with the phone. That side is still intact. I cut off the other side, in order to put a Dutch plug on it. Here I am getting confused.

I normally use wire that has two smaller wires inside. Works fine. But this phone has three wires inside red, blue and white. How do I connect these to the two-wire-wires we use? When I connect red to one wire and white to the other, I can make a call, but I cannot make the phone ring.

This is probably, for those in the know, a simple question. Would be grateful for any help.
