1. Yes, your speaker wires is too small, you should have at leat 1 square millimetre of area for each wire.
2. But the 'crackily sound is not necessary from the wire, it's from a bad contact in the signal path somewhere between the pickup and the speaker
. The most common places are the volume potentiometer or any of the connectors along the path. If there is 'crackling sound' when you turn the volume up or down, this is the spot. If not, continue the search....
