does anyone happen to know why I can't receive Private Messages?

Check if your private message mailbox is already full of old messages.
If that is the case, then clear the unneeded old messages to get space to receive new messages.
There is a limit how many messages the private message mailbox in this site can hold (around 50 if I remember correctly).
