Charging Problem IBM Thinkpad 600X

I have an IBM Thinkpad 600X. Prompted a message to the effect that "there was a probleming out of sleep mode last time and would I like to cease going to sleep mode?" I clicked yes. Since then (qestionably coincidence) I have had a dead battery. Bought a new one (minimally charged on arrival, but enough to get on-line for a minute or two). Problem now seems that battery will not charge nor will the AC adapter power up laptop. Tho adapter appears to be putting out voltage (have not checked exact output) should I try a new adapter/power supply? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
