Microcontroller project: read sms and display

Hi all, im new to forums and loving it, there seems to be a great resource of information.

Im seeking some help and a small project i have been asked to do to expose me to microcontrollers.

What i need to do is be able to receive a text message and display it in form other than using a mobile phone display, we're talking a bigger screen for a more public message. I want to receive a message to be stored and displyed, then when a new messge is received for it to be replaced.

I have searched the web all found nothing that performs such a task, ie Atiny, all the devices appear to be sending warning mesaages to another mobile.

Would anyone know it this possible and what the best way to attck this would be, as you could probably tell i have limited knowledge of microcontrollers.

hey right.

I think ive sussed out the who AT commands thing, just struggling with selecting a MCU. There is so much to choose from. Can anyone point me in the direction where i could find a microcontroller that i could use.

you can use PIC or ATMEL micro controller

before sending SMS you can build some small project like on/off LED

If you want to use C language then you can choose
free SDCC compiler http://sdcc.sourceforge.net


You can use ATMEL AT89S51 + C language

I suggested this because of being easy. Certainly this is not
very efficient

there is two topology. text mode and pdu mode, some mobile use text mode. which is perfect for u. rest are contact with www.matrixele.com

If you are using Linux based hardware you can try out http://www.kannel.org/ on it.
Or just check out the code and use it as a sample.
