It seems that smart phone business have evolved to point where even relatively small companies can start to make their own phones. This developments like:
- many people who know mobile phones are looking for new jobs (business of many mobile phone companies not going that well)
- architectural changes (application processor communicating with separate ready communication processor+rf module instead of one processor trying to do everything)
- there are many reference platforms for smartphones you can start your own designs
- there are ready operating systems you can use with small modifications on your products (Android being most successful in this but not the only one)
- there are companies that can design whole phone to you
- you can outsource all your manufacturing
- etc…
So nowadays with relatively reasonable mount of R&D it is possible to make your own smartphone. This change has for example created very many new mobile phone manufacturers in China.
The situation that Nokia is going down fast with Windows Phone seems to have created place for some new mobile phone companies in Finland. Two new mobile phone companies have been started in Finland quite recently. Behind both of them there are people that have previously worked for Nokia.
Jolla is developing Meego based smarphones. Jolla has big plans in China: it wants to become an alternative to iOS and Android. The company aims to build the third smartphone ecosystem in China around Nokia’s rejected MeeGo operating system. The new version of Meego for that will be called Sailfish. Finnish Jolla Mobile wants to develop a better smartphone, which is now a lot of applications. Phone natively support HTML5 and Qt-based applications. The company’s secret weapon is that it can also run Android applications under Meego with ACL technology.
Finnish mobile phone company Jolla is going to present its new smartphone operating system “Sailfish” in Helsinki next month at Slush event in 21 to 22. November. “Our user interface is more modern than the Android and iPhone. They have remained static time point for five years, but can do better”.
The ex-Nokians are almost ready to reveal their MeeGo/Sailfish based smartphone. Jolla’s first Meego phone will be based on a reference circuit boards and integrated software platform. The 4G phone is on the way. For some more details my Meego blog article comments where I have posted many news related to Jolla.

Another new smart phone start-up in Finland is Adaia. Adaia smart phone is aimed at outdoor enthusiasts. Adaia team got fed up wrapping our smartphones in a plastic bag or protective cover every time we went outside to have some fun. They asked: Was our lifestyle too harsh or smartphones too fragile? They began to suspect the latter. Then they decided to do something about it. They started to imagine what the perfect smartphone would be like: our smartphone should be shockproof, dustproof, waterproof down to 10 meters in seawater and able to gain MIL STD 810G certification. It should be able to connect even outside cellular network coverage, thus allowing satellite texting.
To realize the dream the Adaia company contacted several design companies to do it: BMW DesignworksUSA for industrial design and Elektrobit for what goes inside and makes the phone tick. Adaian phones should are expected to run Android operating system. Adaia so far have not revealed the release phones for sale or supply schedule.
Let’s wait to see what comes out of those companies in next few years.

Finnish startup Jolla is open for business. That’s the message CEO Marc Dillon was putting out, loud and clear, during two on-stage appearances at the Mobile World Congress tradeshow in Barcelona last week. Not a bad amount of stage time for a first time MWC attendee and a mobile upstart that hasn’t sold a single handset yet because it’s still busy making its first phone.
The sales pitch Jolla is taking to carriers and consumers is that Android has become too dominant and is commodifying the industry, while Apple’s platform is too closed and controlled. Jolla’s MeeGo-based Sailfish OS exists to offer choice, to bring something different to an industry it argues is stagnating under the Android + iOS duopoly.
“At the moment there’s not a lot of choices for consumers in the mobile space. There’s not a great deal of innovation,” Dillon tells TechCrunch. “I think that you have this duopoly with basically two operating systems and essentially two manufacturers. There’s a lot of manufacturers in the Android space but Samsung [dominates].
The first Jolla-branded handset will be launched in time to capture the Christmas and Chinese New Year market, according to Dillon – making Q3 a likely timeframe, although “second half” is all he will be nailed down to. “We’re starting in China, then we’re going to Finland, then we’re going to penetrate into Europe,” he says.

At MWC 2013, Jolla launched its Sailfish SDK that was made available for download at sailfish.org. According to marc Dillon the first application was developed 30 minutes after the SDK was officially released, according to Marc Dillon.
After 11 years spent at Nokia, Marc Dillon left the mobile giant to continue the development of Meego under another name (Sailfish), a project that Nokia finally abandoned soon after deciding to adopt Windows Phone as its main OS for mobile in February 2011. Meego was started at Nokia as the OSSO project in 2006, then became Maemo, then Meego. As part of the Meego project, eight devices were created, including the N900 and the latest one, the N9, whose design inspired the current Nokia Lumia Series.
The first employees were hired at Jolla in January 2012, and the company “started a culture of, basically, self-organized engineering, where there are minimal constraints on what it is required from people” said Marc Dillon, then he added: “we started on working on making our own products and today, we have developed 3 different business models, the first one is our own Jolla branded smartphone which will be starting to sell second half of 2013, the first market will be Finland, followed by China and then we will have some penetration in some Western markets, starting with Europe.”
As for the two other business models, according to Marc Dillon, Jolla is able to help other companies to make “tailored smartphones”, which means, for example, that you could have a “Foursquare phone” or a “Deezer phone” where every part of the phone would be integrated into either your Foursquare or your Deezer experience, meaning that all the core OS applications such as contact, maps, calendar, could become highly integrated with Foursquare or Deezer or any other application.
Basically, the idea is to “take down the existing walls that you have with Android or iOS, we could actually make a phone that is special for people who use Foursquare, and that would resonate with a lot of people.”
Knowing that the Facebook phone was so intensively rumored, before Marc Zuckerberg officially denied the rumors in January, we can imagine that this business model could make sense at some point, as long as the software offers flexible and easy to use privacy settings.
According to Jolla’s CEO, any Android handset provides a similar experience as the next one, so it is time to offer more choices in the mobile market.

Jolla, the start-up company built around former Nokia N9 engineers developing the Sailfish OS for mobile phones, might be dating Wayland. Jolla’s Chief Research Engineer has made it possible to run Wayland atop Android GPU drivers. Additionally, it’s being done with glibc rather than Android’s Bionic libc derivative.
Carsten Munk, the Chief Research Engineer at Jolla, has been working on a solution to enable the use of Wayland on top of Android hardware, particularly with its GPU drivers.
Right now the patches aren’t out in the wild but Munk is planning on putting them out under LGPLv2.1. He sees this work as potentially benefiting not only the Sailfish OS but also OpenWebOS, Qt, KDE, GNOME, Hawaii, Nemo, Mer, EFL, etc.

Company believes that the market is in high demand for the new operating system.
“We will begin pre-sales of the phone in May, and the phone itself will be on sale a few months later. Coming on the market next year, the partners Sailfish phones, and the end of next year will start Sailfishin licensing,” Saarnio line.
Saarnio says that the novelty is in demand.
“By next year, the operating system is a significant breakthrough. Apple’s iOS and Android are obsolescent systems.”
“In the current Android manufacturers do not have one, who is looking for a new operating system. And this new system is Android,” says Saarnio.
But why is really a need for a new system to existing networks? Saarnio says that consumers want a better user experience than the current equipment is obtained. Sailfish provides, inter alia, multitasking.
Jolla now employs about 70 people.

Jolla, a start-up founded by staff from Nokia’s elite Meego-N9 smartphone development team, has posted a teaser video hinting at the imminent announcement of its first smartphone.
The video uses the tagline, “I am the other half” and ends with the message, “All will be revealed on [the] 20th of May.”
In October of last year, the company successfully raised €200 million ($US258 million) from a variety of telecommunications industry players, following the initial funding the company received through Nokia’s Bridge project.
By November, the company demonstrated its forthcoming MeeGo-based Sailfish OS platform during its presentation at the Slush developer conference in Finland.

FINNISH STARTUP Jolla announced the first smartphone to run its Sailfish mobile operating system (OS) on Monday, ahead of its European release later this year.
The Jolla smartphone is the first handset to run Jolla’s Sailfish OS, which is essentially a reworked version of Nokia’s now defunct Meego OS. The Sailfish OS is compatible with Android apps, Jolla boasted, and features a predominantly gesture based user interface.

While the Finns still mourning the loss of Nokia to Microsoft, the company’s former operations manager of the Asia-Thomas Zilliacus wants to take nokia forms of know-how Android. This is a new attempt through Newkia company.
Zilliacus idea is to hire a former Nokia of top talent and develop with them devices on the Android platform. That would be the Zilliacus have had to do with Nokia in the first place, rather than the company chose the most devastating consequences for the Windows Phone platform.
Zilliacus goal is hard, it should make the first phone on the market next year. Impossible is not a chore, because Android Exporting to a finished device platform is not a huge time-consuming chore. Instead Zilliacus idea that the market should offer something new to the project may be formed factor in the delays.
