I own Fujifilm HS20EXR digital camera that use to take photos for this blog. One day I thought I wanted to have a wired external trigger. The ready made cables seemed to be expensive and/or hard to find. So I used the DIY approach: search for needed details from Internet and then build my own external trigger.
Web page Triggertrap to Fujifilm RR-80 cable had the following instructions:
That circuit looks rather non-standard; instead of simply connecting two wires, it uses resistors to trigger the cameras via USB ID pin. Looks good, but it is also always a good idea to double-check the details before proceeding. Information at IR Remote and Intervalometer for S100fs Arduino Project: Intervalometer for Fuji cameras pages seems to confirm that this is the way the circuit should be built. So I felt safe to proceed.
I built the circuit according to the plan at it worked well with my Fujifilm HS20 camera. The hardest part was finding mini USB male connecters that had all the pins brought out. Normally Pin 4 (ID) is terminated inside the connector on ready made USB cables, so they can’t used as parts for this project.
Next plan is to maybe add some more electronics (small relay or opto-isolator) that allows me to connect external control circuit easily to my camera. That’s a project for some other day.
