Xbox One vs PS4 teardown

Microsoft released the Xbox One today. Also a recent research says that Game Play Has No Negative Impact on Kids, UK Study Finds: A massive study of some 11,000 youngsters in Britain has found that playing video games, even as early as five years old, does not lead to later behavior problems. So there is no reason to avoid gaming.

After eight years, Microsoft has finally released a proper successor to the Xbox 360: Microsoft released the Xbox One today, putting the next-gen console war into full swing just in time for the holidays! Sony released it’s Playstation 4 console just recently with good results: Sony sells over 1 million PlayStation 4 consoles in just 24 hours.

Now to the teardown of those brand new consoles to see what is inside them. Teardowns provide a look inside a device and should not be used as disassembly instructions. iFixit tears down the Xbox One, praises its repairability so take a look at Xbox One Teardown to see it yourself.

Then to PlayStation 4 teardown. Wired magazine has video titled Watch Our Exclusive Teardown of the PlayStation 4, but I will put here PlayStation 4 Teardown from iFixIt.

For more Playstation 4 information take a look at the following articles: Slideshow: PlayStation 4 Teardown, It’s the games, stupid: Sony to make ‘about $18′ on each PlayStation 4, Marvell Does Comms for Sony PS4 and Sony PS4 Goes Monolithic, Says Chipworks.

Which of them will be the one to rule them all? Or will increasingly popular mobile gaming hit their sales so that none of them really wins the game? Hard to say. In think there is still place for all those different gaming formats.

Xbox One vs. PS4: Microsoft More Profit Per Console
    Comparing Bill of Materials Costs
    http://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1320199&

Microsoft comes out punching with a significant upgrade to the Xbox franchise console and a true competitor to Sony’s PS4 while delivering per-unit profits.

TechInsights Teardown costing shows both companies can profit from sales of their gaming consoles this holiday season. In fact, they used many similar parts to optimize their investment in the next generation of gaming consoles. Though AMD came out as a big winner in the APU (integrated CPU and GPU), there are choice design differences around both the processor design and the use of memory in each device.

The TechInsights bill of materials for the Microsoft Xbox One amounts to $331. Based on this — and when the estimated costs for the peripherals are included — TechInsights believes Microsoft will have a gross profit of approximately $100 per console sold. This is far better than the $43 Sony will make per complete unit.

Though Microsoft seems to have generated more profit per console, it remains to be seen how the devices will compare as developers invest in building radical new games for the powerful platforms.

AMD at the heart of gaming
From a technology standpoint, both systems have an AMD chip at their heart. The Xbox One and the PS4 run nearly identical 28-nm AMD eigh-core APU (two Quad-Core Jaguar modules), yet Microsoft has overclocked its version to run at 1.75 GHz, versus the PS4′s 1.6 GHz. However, the difference really lies in the GPU.

Both companies used GPU modules nested within the processor package, but the Sony PS4 contains 1,152 cores, versus the Xbox’s 768.

The approach to system memory is the significant variation between these two gaming consoles.

Interestingly both manufactures chose to use Marvell for connectivity.

Microsoft admits to Xbox One disc drive issues
But says ‘a very small number’ are affected
    http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2309002/microsoft-admits-to-xbox-one-disc-drive-issues

GAMES CONSOLE MAKER Microsoft might have sold a lot of Xbox One consoles this weekend, but some punters have reported hardware problems.

The Xbox One went on sale in the UK on Friday, and a number of early adopters reported issues with the games console’s disc drive, saying that it will not recognise discs.

Although it has yet to reveal a percentage of faulty consoles, Microsoft has been keen to point out that the issue is affecting “a very small” number of Xbox One units, and has said that gamers can promptly have these units replaced.

Xbox One Teardown: Yet Another PC in Game Clothing
    Chipworks
    http://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1320258&

It’s clear we’re in the run-up to the gift-giving season, with multiple launches of tablets and gaming systems. Last week was the turn of the Microsoft Xbox One, and it’s hard to believe it’s been twelve years since the first Xbox was launched, and eight years since the Xbox 360. There have been a few upgrades since the first 360, but now it’s time for a complete rework.

Style is a personal thing, but the new console looks cleaner and simpler than the earlier generations, although it still has a separate power brick to get in the way, unlike the Sony PS4.

    What’s inside?
Inside we can see the Philips & Lite-on Blu-ray/DVD drive and a Samsung 500 GB hard disc drive, and of course the cooling fan, with parts of the heat pipes visible. At the top left in the first thumbnail image is the WiFi board, linked by a slim coax wire to an antenna board at the front right.

    The main board
Now we get the heatsink off and the motherboard out, and as expected the C/GPU processor is surrounded by DRAM chips, in this case 16 SK Hynix 4-Gb DDR3 SDRAMs, giving a total of 8 GB dynamic memory.

The main processor chip has the same style of heat-dissipating package as the PS4 CPU, and the die is actually larger at 363 sq. mm. (vs 348 sq.mm. for the PS4 die)

Much has been made of the different memory architectures between the Xbox One and Playstation 4. Indeed, according to technology sites such as Anandtech and Red Gaming Tech, the higher complexity of the Xbox memory architecture is the likely culprit behind the lower resolutions of some of the Xbox launch titles, compared to the same games running on a PS4.

Sony’s PS4 uses a unified 8GB main system memory accessed in parallel by the either the CPU or GPU, which sit together on one die, through a relatively high-speed GDDR5 memory interface. The Xbox, although it also uses an 8GB main system memory to which both the CPU and GPU have access, chose a lower-power but lower performance DDR3 interface. To compensate for this slower main memory, a 32MB ultra high speed dedicated graphics memory is included on die as an embedded SRAM block, together with the CPU and GPU.

    The controller
The controller, as usual, has a low chip count; a Freescale SCKL26Z128LL4 Kinetis ultra-low power microcontroller, with a 32-bit ARM Cortex M0+ core and 128 KB embedded flash, and a custom Microsoft X872519 WiFi chip on a separate sub-board.

4chan’s fake Xbox One instructions convince users to brick their systems
    http://www.dailydot.com/lol/4chan-unlock-xbox-prank-brick/

With as many problems as Microsoft’s new gaming console, the Xbox One, has encountered in its rocky road to the holiday market,

Yesterday, 4chan’s infamous /b/ forum—which a few months ago convinced a bunch of people to dunk their new iPhones in water—unleashed an elaborate infographic that promises a “hack” to provide backwards compatibility for the Xbox One.

There’s just one hitch: Actually following the directions will totally destroy your new toy. You know.

The prank purports to “unlock” the console, allowing it to play games designed for the older Xbox 360.

Instead, it “bricks” the Xbox One completely, rendering it totally inoperable.

it doesn’t come with reversal instructions.

    4chan’s prank is pure evil.

It seems as though Microsoft has its hands full trying to keep Xbox fans from self-destructing

Microsoft Xbox One Sales Hit 2 Million in Race to Catch Sony
    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-12-11/microsoft-s-xbox-one-sales-hit-2-million-amid-race-to-catch-sony.html

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) said sales of the new Xbox One video-game console reached more than 2 million in its first 18 days on the market, as the company vies to keep pace with Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 during the holiday season.

Sony said on Dec. 3 that it had sold 2.1 million of its machines since they went on sale Nov. 15 in North America.

“Sales of both platforms are basically on par with each other,” said Colin Sebastian, an analyst at Robert W. Baird & Co. in San Francisco. “Production seems to be roughly the same for both platforms and they’re both doing well at retail.”

The embarrassment of a design error in the new Xbox – how can this happen?

While the Xbox One is already on sale in Europe, it is limited to American TV standard. This is reflected in European as not so smooth moving image.

One of Microsoft’s new Xbox gaming console to the discovery of a peculiar design flaw. Game console attached to devices can be used only American standards, to give images a disturbance in Finland and elsewhere in Europe used.

What makes this particularly troubled by the fact that the console is already on sale in Europe. Among other things, the English owners have brought an uproar.

Core of the problem lies in the fact that the Xbox One is designed for home entertainment center, to which all other living room connected to the wireless equipment. Through the Xbox can take a picture of a TV set-top box, a Blu-ray disc player – or even competing Playstation 4 to.

The U.S. television broadcast standard NTSC at 60 times per second live image of the European PAL standard frequency of 50 times per second. One force the Xbox to the TV the picture to go to 60 Hz frequency, even if it is fed to the device connected to the console of European 50-cycle transmission. Frequency conversion, the picture jumps or freezes at times.

Laaksonen, the size of the problem varies depending on the program deemed. For example, a news broadcast is not a big problem, sports broadcasts programs along the lines of a quick view of the problem is greater.

You can try to work around by forcing the Xbox One work of 50 Hz. Doing this, in turn, interferes with how the game works.

Another solution is not to engage the other image sources for Xbox One.

    - In this case, however, lost the functionality of the Xbox One, Laaksonen says.

    - What sort of error may have to go through? The matter has been in existence and known for decades, Laaksonen wonders.

Finland Xbox product manager Jarno Kallunkijärvi-Mättö says that this is a known Microsoft in order of importance and top priority.

    - We’re hard at work to ensure that we bring the future software update 50 Hz countries, Kallunkijärvi-Mättö says.
