I built Cardboard DIY Virtual Reality Headset

I just built Android Cardboard DIY Virtual Reality Headset of which I mentioned in the blog two weeks ago.  Here is my DIY version. I had to make some changed to lens holding part, because the lenses I had were a little lit larger than the ones the headset was designed to use (not too hard, just cut larger hole with knife). Maybe my cutting could be more accurate or the cardboard should have been better quality, but anyway the plans worked.

diyvrglasses

Plus: It works! It is much better than trying to use the app without the glasses. Give this as a toy to a kid and it is hard to get it back…

Minus: I used Samsung S4 Mini smart phone and I must say that the low screen resolution is clearly a limiting factor in picture quality. The screen parameters are 540 x 960 pixels, 4.3 inches (~256 ppi pixel density) which will makes in this use the individual pixels very much on this VR headset application (only 540×480 resolution per eye).

Also the magnetic button did not feel to be the most accurate means to control the phone. Sometimes it seemed to work well, and but it did not feel that it detected presses every time. Also the movement detection could be more accurate.

Still I think this was a good idea. On the Significance of Google’s New Cardboard (Video) article also likes this cheap-and-cheerful (it’s made of cardboard, after all) approach to nearly instant VR viewing. The basic idea for stereo viewing is from Viewmaster, which has been doing something similar for over 70 years with photos. You can of course can biy a slicker 3-D adapter for your smartphone from many companies. There are ready made products and third-party Cardboard kits that are getting ready to hit the market. For some more details on Google Cardboard, check my Android Cardboard DIY Virtual Reality Headset posting and On the Significance of Google’s New Cardboard Video.

You know the Google Cardboard kit that’s a real VR headset made of cardboard (and a smart phone)? Google may have gotten their inspiration from Oculus, because every Oculus Rift DK2 ships with a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 inside.

    Low Tech High Tech

Google Cardboard should be terrible. Really, it should. It’s literally made of cardboard. I remember as a kid some cereal boxes came with spy glasses you had to cut out of the box itself—and they were terrible. But Google Cardboard is amazing. Granted, you need to add your $750 Android phone to it, but that’s already in your pocket anyway.

The reason Google Cardboard can be so simple is that its only job is to let you focus on a phone that is two inches from your face. A couple plastic lenses held in place by a chunk of cardboard isn’t terribly high tech.

Using apps from the Google Play Store, the VR experience is shockingly good using nothing more than a modern Android cell phone.

The truth is, it takes a lot of graphical power to render two separate dynamic videos on a screen at one time. (That’s how it makes the experience 3D.) So whatever VR app you download will likely have a slightly blocky-looking world. The crazy part is, that doesn’t detract from the experience. In fact, some blocky trees almost make the experience thatmuch more surreal because it’s obvious you’re in a simulation. Yet, when you turn your head, it changes like you’re actually there!

I have to disagree with your claim “antivirus software to get rid of all security related issues.”
That claim looks like sales people lying talk.

There is no antivirus software that can get rid of all security related issues!
I think the ones who claims that are either lie or do not really understand computer security.

Google Calls It Quits With VR, But Cardboard Lives On
    https://hackaday.com/2021/03/30/google-calls-it-quits-with-vr-but-cardboard-lives-on/

Google giving up on one of their projects and leaving its established userbase twisting in the wind hardly counts as news anymore. In fact, it’s become something of a meme. The search giant is notorious for tossing out ideas just to see what sticks, and while that’s occasionally earned them some huge successes, it’s also lead to plenty of heartache for anyone unlucky enough to still be using one of the stragglers when the axe falls.

So when the search giant acknowledged in early March that they would no longer be selling their Cardboard virtual reality viewer, it wasn’t exactly a shock. The exceptionally low-cost VR googles, literally made from folded cardboard, were a massive hit when they were unveiled back in 2014. But despite Google’s best efforts to introduce premium Cardboard-compatible hardware with their Daydream View headset two years later, it failed to evolve into a profitable business.

On the software side, Android 7 “Nougat” got baked-in VR support in 2016, but it was quietly removed by the time Android 11 was released in the fall of 2020.

With Cardboard no longer available for purchase, Google has simply made official what was already abundantly clear: they are no longer interested in phone-based virtual reality.

Between Google’s decision to spin it off into an open source project and the legions of third party viewers on the market, Cardboard isn’t going down without a fight. The path ahead might be different from what Google originally envisioned, but the story certainly isn’t over.

    https://developers.googleblog.com/2019/11/open-sourcing-google-cardboard.html

Google has rightly caught a lot of flack in the past for abandoning products without giving them a chance to succeed, or worse, killing a product off without having an exit plan in place, but it’s hard to find fault in how they’ve decided to wind down Cardboard. We could debate why they were unable to monetize the concept of phone-based VR, especially with public interest being so high, but it’s a moot point. The important thing is that the community was given unfettered access to the Cardboard hardware and software once Google decided they couldn’t make money off of the idea.

The word “FAMILY” plays a vital role in every human life because family comes as a top priority; we are well aware of that. Like a tree has its root, stem, branches, leaf, flowers, the same as the family tree has its structure like grandparents, parents, child, and it keeps continuing from generation to generation. “Family tree,” yeah, just two simple words, but these two words are highly important for everyone’s life.
