Searching for innovation

Innovation is about finding a better way of doing something. Like many of the new development buzzwords (which many of them are over-used on many business documents), the concept of innovation originates from the world of business. It refers to the generation of new products through the process of creative entrepreneurship, putting it into production, and diffusing it more widely through increased sales. Innovation can be viewed as t he application of better solutions that meet new requirements, in-articulated needs, or existing market needs. This is accomplished through more effective products, processes, services, technologies, or ideas that are readily available to markets, governments and society. The term innovation can be defined as something original and, as a consequence, new, that “breaks into” the market or society.

Innoveracy: Misunderstanding Innovation article points out that  there is a form of ignorance which seems to be universal: the inability to understand the concept and role of innovation. The way this is exhibited is in the misuse of the term and the inability to discern the difference between novelty, creation, invention and innovation. The result is a failure to understand the causes of success and failure in business and hence the conditions that lead to economic growth. The definition of innovation is easy to find but it seems to be hard to understand.  Here is a simple taxonomy of related activities that put innovation in context:

  • Novelty: Something new
  • Creation: Something new and valuable
  • Invention: Something new, having potential value through utility
  • Innovation: Something new and uniquely useful

The taxonomy is illustrated with the following diagram.

The differences are also evident in the mechanisms that exist to protect the works: Novelties are usually not protectable, Creations are protected by copyright or trademark, Inventions can be protected for a limited time through patents (or kept secret) and Innovations can be protected through market competition but are not defensible through legal means.

Innovation is a lot of talked about nowdays as essential to businesses to do. Is innovation essential for development work? article tells that innovation has become central to the way development organisations go about their work. In November 2011, Bill Gates told the G20 that innovation was the key to development. Donors increasingly stress innovation as a key condition for funding, and many civil society organisations emphasise that innovation is central to the work they do.

Some innovation ideas are pretty simple, and some are much more complicated and even sound crazy when heard first. The is place for crazy sounding ideas: venture capitalists are gravely concerned that the tech startups they’re investing in just aren’t crazy enough:

 

Not all development problems require new solutions, sometimes you just need to use old things in a slightly new way. Development innovations may involve devising technology (such as a nanotech water treatment kit), creating a new approach (such as microfinance), finding a better way of delivering public services (such as one-stop egovernment service centres), identifying ways of working with communities (such as participation), or generating a management technique (such as organisation learning).

Theorists of innovation identify innovation itself as a brief moment of creativity, to be followed by the main routine work of producing and selling the innovation. When it comes to development, things are more complicated. Innovation needs to be viewed as tool, not master. Innovation is a process, not a one time event. Genuine innovation is valuable but rare.

    When NASA deliberately smashed the asteroid Dimorphos with the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft back in 2022, it was seen as a technological triumph because it demonstrated that humans have the ability to redirect a space rock that poses a threat to Earth.

    That’s all well and good, but it looks like that smashing event also had some unintended consequences: debris from the asteroid may be headed back to Earth in the first ever man-made meteor shower, according to researchers in Spain and Italy.

    After performing an in-depth analysis of the impact DART made on Dimorphos and the millions of the resulting fragments, the researchers concluded in a preprint paper that’s been accepted into The Planetary Science Journal that many of the small chunks from the crash will reach Mars and Earth — though importantly, they won’t pose any danger.

    A man has been awarded a one million Euro (AU$1.65 million) prize for a little-known invention he developed in the 1980s. Although its creator describes the device as “hidden from the eyes of society” it’s used by millions of people around the world because it helps save on electricity and petrol usage.

    Professor Bantval Jayant Baliga was handed the 2024 Millennium Technology Prize for inventing the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT). It’s been described as “the most important semi-conductor device” for making engines more efficient and reducing pollution in the last 40 years.

    The tiny plastic-coated device regulates the flow of electricity in high-voltage devices, allowing more efficient precise, digital control of power. It is hidden inside most electric motors including consumer products like air conditioners and refrigerators, some light globes, all wind and solar installations, and electric and hybrid cars.

    How much pollution has IGBT prevented from entering the atmosphere?
    Baliga is credited with having the most negative carbon footprint in the world. His IGBT is estimated to have reduced global emissions of the greenhouse gas by more than 82 gigatons since the 1990s — roughly the same amount of carbon dioxide generated by all human activity for three years.

    Scientists have established the existence of a “third state” which lies beyond the traditional boundaries of life and death.

    Traditionally, death has been understood as the moment when an organism ceases, irreversibly, to function as a whole. And yet, practices such as organ donation show that organs, tissues and cells can continue to work even after the rest of an organism fails.

    Researchers have, therefore, been exploring the question of how certain cells can continue to operate even after an organism has died.

    And now, in a new study, a team of experts have detailed how certain cells, when provided with the necessary stimulation, have the ability to “transform into multicellular organisms with new functions after death.”

    For example, researchers found that skin cells extracted from dead frog embryos were able to adapt to the new conditions of a petri dish in a lab – spontaneously reorganising themselves into multicellular organisms called xenobots.

    According to Noble and Pozhitkov: “Different cell types have varying survival times. For example, in humans, white blood cells die between 60 and 86 hours after organismal death. In mice, skeletal muscle cells can be regrown after 14 days postmortem, while fibroblast cells from sheep and goats can be cultured up to a month or so postmortem.”

    “The third state not only offers new insights into the adaptability of cells. It also offers prospects for new treatments,” Noble and Pozhitkov say.

    Researchers at ETH Zurich have managed to make sound waves travel only in one direction. In the future, this method could also be used in technical applications with electromagnetic waves.

    Water, light and sound waves usually propagate in the same way forward as in a backward direction.

    Ten years ago, researchers succeeded in suppressing sound wave propagation in the backward direction; however, this also attenuated the waves traveling forwards.

    A team of researchers at ETH Zurich led by Nicolas Noiray, professor for Combustion, Acoustics and Flow Physics, in collaboration with Romain Fleury at EPFL, has now developed a method for preventing sound waves from traveling backward without deteriorating their propagation in the forward direction.

    The basis of this one-way street for sound waves are self-oscillations, in which a dynamical system periodically repeats its behavior. “I’ve actually spent a good part of my career preventing such phenomena,” says Noiray.

    Harmless and useful self-oscillations
    Noiray had the idea to use harmless self-sustaining aero-acoustic oscillations in order to allow sound waves to pass only in one direction and without any losses through a so-called circulator. In his scheme, the unavoidable attenuation of the sound waves is compensated by the self-oscillations in the circulator synchronizing with the incoming waves, which allows them to gain energy from those oscillations.

    The circulator itself was supposed to consist of a disk-shaped cavity through which swirling air is blown from one side through an opening in its center. For a specific combination of blowing speed and intensity of the swirl, a whistling sound is thus created in the cavity.

    Nopeuttamisella on epäilemättä hyötyjä.

    Mutta kannattaako tuplanopeuden käyttäminen? Voiko sillä olla myös haittoja?

    Psykologinen valmentaja varoittaa tavan haittapuolista Popsugarin haastattelussa. Hänen mukaansa säännöllinen tuplanopeuden käyttö voi olla merkki keskittymiskyvyn heikentymisestä, jos tavallisella nopeudella esitetty tieto ei enää riitä vangitsemaan huomiota.

    Säännöllinen tapa nopeuttaa katselu- tai kuuntelutahtia voi johtaa myös siihen, että nopeutettu vauhti alkaa tuntua uudelta normaalilta. CNN:n haastattelemien, podcasteja nopeutetusti kuuntelevien mukaan tavallinen puhe on alkanut kuulostaa liian hitaalta.

    Mashable kertoo tutkimuksesta, jonka mukaan nopeutetulla vauhdilla sisällön omaksuminen ei välttämättä vaikuta siihen, kuinka hyvin se sisäistetään. Vuonna 2021 tehty tutkimus selvitti, oliko videomuotoisen oppimateriaalin katsomisnopeudella vaikutuksia opiskelijoiden oppimiseen. Tuplanopeudella katsoneiden koetulokset eivät poikenneet tavallisella nopeudella katsoneiden tuloksista.

    Tästäkin huolimatta CNN:n haastattelemat asiantuntijat suhtautuvat tapaan kriittisesti. Heille se näyttäytyy multitaskaamisen ja ylisuorittamisen muotona.     Korealaistutkijat Pohangin tiede- ja teknologiayliopistosta (POSTECH) ja Korean energiatutkimusinstituutista (KIER) ovat kehittäneet uuden kolmiulotteisen polymeerirakenteen litiummetalliakkuja varten. Sen parantaa merkittävästi litiumionien kuljetusta ja akun suorituskykyä.

    Elektronisissa laitteissa, kuten sähköajoneuvoissa ja älypuhelimissa, käytettävä akkuteknologia kehittyy jatkuvasti. Nyt tutkitaan erityisesti litiummetallianodeita, joiden energiakapasiteetti on 3860 mAh/g. Lukema on yli kymmenen kertaa enemmän kuin tällä hetkellä markkinoilla olevissa kaupallisissa grafiittianodeissa. Litiummetallianodit voivat varastoida enemmän energiaa pienempään tilaan ja, toisin kuin grafiitti tai pii, ne voivat osallistua suoraan sähkökemiallisiin reaktioihin elektrodeina.

    Kokeissa tutkimustiimi pääsi litiummetallianodiakuissa yli 200 lataus-purkausjaksoon ja saavuttivat korkean energiatiheyden, 344 Wh/kg. Kokeet testiin lisäksi pussikennoilla, eikä kolikkotyyppisisllä paristoilla. Tämä on lupaavaa tekniikan kaupallistamisen kannalta.
