The USB Killer v2.0 is [Dark Purple]’s second version of this device. The first version was just a small board with a DC/DC converter, a few caps, and a FET. When plugged in to a computer, the converter would charge the caps up to -110V, dump that voltage into the USB signal wires, and repeat the entire process until the computer died. This second version is slightly more refined, and it now dumps -220V directly onto the USB signal wires. Don’t try this at home.

In Oct. 2015, we wrote about USB Killer — a seemingly innocuous USB stick that fries nearly any device it’s inserted into with a bolt of electricity.
Back then, it was a proof of concept, interesting mostly to security researchers and folks who work on USB standards. Now, however, the USB killer has become a gadget anyone can buy.
According to USB Killer’s webpage, it’s a “testing device” which should be a part of every security auditor and hardware designer’s arsenal. The company is also selling the USB Test Shield, a gadget that purportedly lets you safely test a device’s resistance to USB Killer’s high voltage attack.
The USB Killer’s website claims it will destroy 95% of devices it’s inserted into. With that kind of destructive capability, one has to wonder how many of these sticks will actually be bought by security experts, and how many by pranksters and malicious individuals looking to destroy someone else’s equipment.
The USB Test Shield lets you “test” the USB Killer without destroying anything.
Even though it’s a high-voltage device, the USB Killer is touted to be “totally safe.” That may be so, but we still wouldn’t recommend anyone except security/hardware professionals to try it out.
The USB Killer costs 49.95 euros ($56), and the Test Shield 13.95 euros ($16).

It sounds like something out of a B-grade Hollywood plot — a flash drive that you plug into a computer and is capable of destroying it within seconds. Last year, hacker Dark Purple disclosed a USB flash drive designed to fry a modern system as soon as you plug it in. The drive works by discharging -220V through the USB port.
Hong Kong-based company selling a USB Kill Drive 2.0 for just $50.
The integrated nature of modern SoCs means that blasting the USB controller with -200V the way this drive does will typically cause severe damage, up to and including destroying the SoC. While modern motherboards include overcurrent protection, this typically protects against positive voltage.
The company also plans to sell a USB Kill Tester Shield, which it claims will prevent both the USB Kill device from functioning and protect user data from certain kinds of snooping or intrusion if you hook up to an unknown charging station or other device.

A proof-of-concept USB prototype that was designed by a Russian researcher, Dark Purple, last year, to effectively destroy sensitive components of a computer when plugged in.
Now, someone has actually created the Killer USB stick that destroys almost anything – such as Laptops, PCs, or televisions – it is plugged into.
The USB stick discharges 200 volts DC power over the data lines of the host machine and this charge-and-discharge cycle is repeated several numbers of times in just one second, until the USB Kill stick is removed.
“Any public facing USB port should be considered an attack vector,” the company says in a news release. “In data security, these ports are often locked down to prevent exfiltration of data or infiltration of malware, but are very often unprotected against electrical attack.”

With a proliferation of USB Flash disk drives has come a very straightforward attack vector for a miscreant intent on spreading malware onto an organisation’s computer network. Simply drop a few infected drives in the parking lot, and wait for an unsuspecting staff member to pick one up and plug it into their computer. The drives are so familiar that to a non-tech-savvy user they appear harmless, there is no conscious decision over whether to trust them or not.
A diabolical variant on the exploit was [Dark Purple]’s USB Killer. Outwardly similar to a USB Flash drive, it contains an inverter that generates several hundred volts from the USB’s 5 volts, and repeatedly discharges it into the data lines of whatever it is plugged into. Computers whose designers have not incorporated some form of protection do not last long when subjected to its shocking ministrations.
Now the original has a commercial competitor, in the form of Hong Kong-based usbkill.com. It’s a bit cheaper than the original, but that it has appeared at all suggests that there is an expanding market for this type of device and that you may be more likely to encounter one in the future.

While the actual purpose of the USBKill device is actually for engineers, penetration testers and security auditors who want to test a computer or device’s power surge resistance, it’s difficult not to look past the potential for it to be used in malicious ways.
According to USBKill.com, 95 percent of all consumer-level devices are susceptible to the USBKill. This should be a wake-up call to manufacturers to ensure that their products are electrically shielded from power-surge type of attacks via USB ports.

A former student of a college in New York state fried several of the school’s computers and hardware using a device called a “USB killer” that can easily be bought online, according to court documents first reported by ZDNet.
the graduate said “I’m going to kill this guy” while inserting the USB killer device into a college computer, and after the USB killer fried the hardware, the graduate said “it’s dead … it’s gone … boom.”

The devices work by charging themselves, then quickly releasing that charge back through a computer’s USB port.
