My smart watch programming article

Smart watches are a fast growing trend in wearable devices. It is a good to know how to program them. Uusiteknologia magazine has just published my article Näillä työkaluilla teet omia älykellosovelluksia tells basics how to develop applications to most popular smart watch systems from Apple, Google, Pebble and Samsung. Smart watch applications need to be designed differently than smart phone applications because of different operating systems, limited screen resolution and different usage patterns.

There are many companies in Finland that have activities on smart watch and wearable technologies field – and my article Näillä työkaluilla teet omia älykellosovelluksia covers them also. Most well known Finnish companies on the smart watch field are Suunto and Polar that make sport watches with smart features.

Smart watches are no longer interesting

29 per cent of smart watch buyers reject the device. In activity bracelets the percentage is 30. This is a big problem in the hardware industry. According to Gartner, wearable and watch bracelets should simply make a more interesting and more useful.

According to interviewees, the price of wearable devices is still too high in relation to the benefits they bring. Without a strong brand new hardware device is therefore difficult to bring to market.

The Demise of Pebble as a Platform
    http://hackaday.com/2016/12/06/the-demise-of-pebble-as-a-platform/

Despite owning five, including the original Pebble, I’ve always been somewhat skeptical about smart watches. Even so, the leaked news that Fitbit is buying Pebble for “a small amount” has me sort of depressed about the state of the wearables market. Because Pebble could have been a contender, although perhaps not for the reason you might guess.

Pebble is a pioneer of the wearables market, and launched its first smartwatch back in 2012, two years before the Apple Watch was announced. But after turning down an offer of $740 million by Citizen back in 2015, and despite cash injections from financing rounds and a recent $12.8 million Kickstarter, the company has struggled financially.

eMarketer cuts growth forecasts for US smartwatch market in 2016 from 60% to 25% YoY, citing lack of clear use case — Apple may still be claimingthat sales of its Apple Watch are “doing great,” but overall, the wearable device category is failing to grow at the rates forecasted earlier.

U.S. wearables market is doing much worse than expected

Apple may still be claiming that sales of its Apple Watch are “doing great,” but overall, the wearable device category is failing to grow at the rates forecasted earlier. According to a new report from eMarketer, wearables like Apple Watch and Fitbit were expected to grow more than 60 percent year-over-year from 2015 to 2016. However, the firm is now cutting that estimate down to just 25 percent growth this year.

“Smartwatches in particular,” the report said, “have failed to impress customers.”
