Autonomous driving on the highway? That’s nothing. Take a look at what a Tesla with the company’s new, more advanced hardware and software can do in a busy suburban environment.

The hardware required to enable Tesla’s Autopilot 8.1 features is already in the vehicles they’re delivering to their customers. The software, however, wasn’t quite ready to ship yet.Ultimately, Tesla plans to deliver complete door-to-door autonomy. There are still a few legal hurdles standing in the way, obviously.

Tesla Autopilot ‘Predicts’ Accident Before It Happens

A dash cam footage suggests a Tesla on Autopilot may have predicted a nearby freeway crash before it actually happened. A video showed that a Tesla car driving on a highway in the Netherlands started to beep a few seconds ahead of two cars colliding with each other in front of it. A Tesla representative confirmed to media that the beeping heard in the video is indeed the sound of Autopilot’s Forward Collision Warning. Elon Musk tweeted a news article about the incident, adding more credibility to the matter.

Tesla Autopilot’s new radar technology predicts an accident caught on dashcam a second later

With the release of Tesla’s version 8.0 software update in September, the automaker announced a new radar processing technology that was directly pushed over-the-air to all its vehicles equipped with the first generation Autopilot hardware.

One of the main features enabled by the new radar processing capacity is the ability for the system to see ahead of the car in front of you and basically track two cars ahead on the road. The radar is able to bounce underneath or around the vehicle in front of the Tesla Model S or X and see where the driver potentially can not because the leading vehicle is obstructing the view.
