3 AI misconceptions IT leaders must dispel

https://enterprisersproject.com/article/2017/12/3-ai-misconceptions-it-leaders-must-dispel?sc_cid=7016000000127ECAAY

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing many aspects of how we work and live. (How many stories did you read last week about self-driving cars and job-stealing robots? Perhaps your holiday shopping involved some AI algorithms, as well.) But despite the constant flow of news, many misconceptions about AI remain.

AI doesn’t think in our sense of the word at all, Scriffignano explains. “In many ways, it’s not really intelligence. It’s regressive.”

IT leaders should make deliberate choices about what AI can and can’t do on its own. “You have to pay attention to giving AI autonomy intentionally and not by accident,”

    https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/06/openai-makes-gpt-4-generally-available/

OpenAI today announced the general availability of GPT-4, its latest text-generating model, through its API.

Starting this afternoon, all existing OpenAI API developers “with a history of successful payments” can access GPT-4. The company plans to open up access to new developers by the end of this month, and then start raising availability limits after that “depending on compute availability.”

“Millions of developers have requested access to the GPT-4 API since March, and the range of innovative products leveraging GPT-4 is growing every day,” OpenAI wrote in a blog post. “We envision a future where chat-based models can support any use case. ”

GPT-4 can generate text (including code) and accept image and text inputs — an improvement over GPT-3.5, its predecessor, which only accepted text — and performs at “human level” on various professional and academic benchmarks. Like previous GPT models from OpenAI, GPT-4 was trained using publicly available data, including from public web pages, as well as data that OpenAI licensed.

The image-understanding capability isn’t available to all OpenAI customers just yet. OpenAI’s testing it with a single partner, Be My Eyes, to start with. But it hasn’t indicated when it’ll open it up to the wider customer base.

ChatGPT pauses Bing integration to stop people from bypassing paywalls

ChatGPT aided users aiming to bypass paywalls, but OpenAI put a stop to it.
    https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/chatgpt-pauses-bing-integration-to-stop-people-from-bypassing-paywalls?fbclid=IwAR3cpwGL-hQMEZZ6M7UZ-uLYOxMPG7UKlNhiMIXT_Th8qkmt8J4yU5J2k20

Microsoft promised to bring Bing integration to the platform to enhance its search experience during its annual developer conference for developers, Build 2023. Before this inclusion, ChatGPT depended on OpenAI’s GPT-4 model, which limited its capabilities. This is because the chatbot could only access information up until September 2021.

However, shortly after incorporating the new feature into the chatbot, OpenAI discovered that there are instances where it malfunctions. “For example, if a user specifically asks for a URL’s full text, it might inadvertently fulfill this request,” said OpenAI.

As of July 3, 2023, we’ve disabled the Browse with Bing beta feature out of an abundance of caution while we fix this in order to do right by content owners. We are working to bring the beta back as quickly as possible, and appreciate your understanding!

Last month, experimental artist and futurist Claire “Grimes” Boucher announced that she was willing to have artists clone her voice with the use of AI — but only if they were willing to “split 50 percent royalties.”

To put her money where her mouth was, she even created an entire AI generator platform called Elf.Tech specifically designed to copy her voice.

Now, an LA-based artist and producer who goes by the name Kito has released a new track called “Cold Touch,” the first officially released and credited song that features Grimes’ cloned vocals.

The song clearly made an impression, with Grimes lauding the track as a “masterpiece” and an “amazing song.”

Having listened to the track, we may not go as far as to call it a masterpiece, but it’s a catchy tune that makes great use of Grimes’ synthesized vocals — which themselves, honestly, are the star of the show.

CEO replaces 90% of support staff with AI, praises the system on Twitter
You can probably predict the response
    https://www.techspot.com/news/99369-ceo-replaces-90-support-staff-ai-praises-system.html

A hot potato: Few people are happy about AI taking human jobs. So, if you’re a CEO who decides to lay off 90% of a support team, it’s probably not a good idea to post a celebratory tweet thread about the “tough” but “necessary” move. That’s what Suumit Shah did, and the public response is about what you’d expect.

Shah, the 31-year-old CEO and founder of Bengaluru-based Duukan, which helps merchants to set up online stores and sell products digitally, posted that “We had to layoff 90% of our support team because of this AI chatbot. Tough? Yes. Necessary? Absolutely.”

Several more tweets followed, all of them praising the AI assistant that can answer customer queries instantly and precisely – and doesn’t receive any wages or sick leave, obviously. He goes so far as comparing the AI’s abilities to Edward Morra from the movie Limitless running the entire customer support section. Again, though, the fictional character of Morra would still want things like money for his services.

Shah adds that the AI chatbot took under two minutes to respond to customer queries, whereas human staff took two hours, and that replacing the team has reduced support costs by 85%.

Throughout the many, many tweets, there is no mention whatsoever of the 23 people laid off, what benefits they received, etc. When someone mentions this fact, Shah seems quite annoyed at the person putting a downer on his AI love fest. “As expected, ‘someone’ will get offended on behalf of ‘someone else,’” he writes, adding that he would post about assistance for his staff on LinkedIn because on Twitter, people are in search of “profitability and not sympathy.” There’s also a little broken heart emoji, which will doubtlessly please those he recently made unemployed.

“Maybe it was the right decision for the business, but it shouldn’t have turned into a celebratory/marketing thread about it,” said another user.

Saha told Insider that he regretted posting about the layoffs on Twitter but was adamant that his point still stands. “AI is taking our jobs,” he said. “Over time, everybody will start doing this. It’s not just us. Maybe I’m just too straightforward to have put it on Twitter,” Shah added.

Another organization to replace its (entire) helpline staff with an AI chatbot was the US National Eating Disorder Association. It was quickly disabled after giving out harmful information, including telling a woman to count calories, weigh, and measure herself weekly

Companies such as IBM have said they intend to stop hiring for jobs that could potentially be performed by generative artificial intelligence, which is expected to impact 300 million full-time jobs globally. Stress and anxiety over job losses caused by AI have led to 80% of tech workers using medications, either under a doctor’s supervision or otherwise, as coping a mechanism. Heavy alcohol consumption is also becoming commonplace. Still, think of all the money it saves.

How to Create a Serverless ChatGPT App in 10 Minutes
    https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/create-a-serverless-chatgpt-app/

Since OpenAI released an official API for ChatGPT in March 2023, many developers and entrepreneurs are interested in integrating it into their own business operations.

But some significant barriers remain that make it difficult for them to do this:

OpenAI provides a simple stateless API for ChatGPT. The developer needs to keep track of the history and context of each conversation in a cache or database managed by the application. The developer also needs to manage and safeguard the API keys. There is a lot of boilerplate code unrelated to the application’s business logic.

Studios Want to Replace Background Actors With AI After Paying Them for Only One Day
“So if you think that’s a groundbreaking proposal, I suggest you think again.”
    https://futurism.com/studios-ai-replace-background-actors?fbclid=IwAR0bHT6oIo_gHpbPcsz1f3LDnmHAGGhvJv2k8syKGIKchoc5mV4qHl2f0do

It’s official: the Screen Actors Guild is joining the Writers Guild of America on the picket lines by the end of Thursday, the first time that’s happened since 1960.

That means much of Hollywood is effectively on strike, grinding the most influential film industry in the world to a halt.

Ever since the WGA went on strike two months ago, the conversation has often revolved around the use of AI and how it could undermine the livelihoods of both writers and actors.

And it sounds like the extent to which studio executives, represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), wanted to leverage the tech is shocking.

“In that groundbreaking AI proposal,” Crabtree-Ireland said, referring to the AMPTP and as quoted by CNBC, “they propose that our background performers should be able to be scanned, get paid for one day’s pay, and their company should own that scan their image, their likeness and should be able to use it for the rest of eternity in any project they want with no consent and no compensation.”

“So if you think that’s a groundbreaking proposal, I suggest you think again,” he added.

Such a proposal would effectively force human background actors to give up their physical likeness to be recreated in the form of digital projections at the discretion of the studios, a dystopian vision of the future of the film industry

Suzi Dougherty’s photograph of 18-year-old Caspar deemed ‘suspicious’ by judges, even though it was taken on her mobile

Suzi Dougherty was chuffed when a happy snap she took of her son on her iPhone turned out so well.

She was so happy with the sharp, colour-saturated picture of him posing with mannequins at a Gucci exhibition that she had a copy printed off for her mum and entered it in a local photography competition.

Four judges considered the photo – and they loved it.

Then they rejected it. They were suspicious it had been generated by artificial intelligence.

“When this image came up, we all loved it, then I said, ‘Hang on it looks a little AI-ish,’ then we all started talking about it and went well, we can’t know for sure it is or isn’t, but on the basis we’re suspicious we can’t allow it in.

Speaking to YouTube host Tom Bilyeu of the “Impact Theory” podcast, a former senior executive at Google said that artificial intelligence-powered sex robots may soon replace human partners.

Google’s research-and-development arm X’s former chief business officer Mo Gawdat warned that AI will usher in a “redesign of love and relationships” that will see artificially-created encounters become as satisfying as real-life interactions.

He explained that virtual reality and augmented reality headsets, like Apple’s Vision Pro or Quest 3, will soon be used to simulate sex.

“You know, that’s actually quite messy,” he said. “It’s all signals in your brain that you enjoy companionship and sexuality, and — if you really want to take the magic out of it — it can be simulated.”

Fully AI-Generated Influencers Are Getting Thousands of Reactions Per Thirst Trap
    “I’m an AI creation.”
    https://futurism.com/ai-generated-influencers

For years, CGI-generated virtual influencers have been shilling brands, enjoying lavish lifestyles, and amassing substantial followings on social media.

So it was probably inevitable that influencer culture would soon be sucked into the AI craze. Indeed, earlier this year, one influencer created an AI chatbot version of herself that she rented out as a $1-per-minute “virtual girlfriend.”

Now things are getting even weirder. Thanks to the advent of AI-powered image generators like Stable Diffusion and Midjourney, some are now fabricating entire feeds of internet personalities that don’t actually exist.

The result is a fascinating journey through the uncanny valley: haunting Twitter and Instagram feeds showing these AI-generated influencers — virtually all taking the form of conventionally attracted women — posing and preening in virtual thirst traps, to the delight of sometimes tens of thousands of seemingly human fans. Maybe we can’t blame them; aside from considerable amounts of skin-smoothing and repetitive backgrounds, both hallmarks of AI image generators, it’s a surprisingly convincing illusion.
