Shure SM86 vs Shure SM58
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWiZFUZxXXk
A review of the Shure SM86 condenser vocal microphone, in comparison to the legendary Shure SM58. The SM86 is described by Shure as the ‘big brother’ to the ’58 and is a versatile alternative to the industry standard vocal mic, for both vocal and (surprisingly) instrument applications.
Also includes an explanation of the way in which dynamic and condenser microphones work, and demonstrations of both mics.

Shure SM58 Myths 1 – Old Technology
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKpPQ-sZN-I
It’s true that the SM58 has been around longer than many bands. But believe it or not, the technology that makes it work is still cutting-edge today! In this video, Shure’s Chad Wiggins explains why other dynamic mic manufacturers work so hard at imitating the fabled 58 – and the one thing they all get wrong.
Shure SM58 Myths 2 – Denting Grille
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5ZebRtreS4
Like scars on a heavyweight prize fighter, a bashed and bruised grille reveals the long, hard road that an SM58 microphone has traveled. Like a bodyguard, the grille’s job is to take a beating to protect the “VIP” – the more-delicate microphone transducer inside. In this video, Chad Wiggins explains why a 58 keeps working long after other microphones have gone down for the count.
Shure SM58 Myths 3 – Feedback
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ab3o4ms7m_M
When feedback strikes, the microphone usually takes the rap. But feedback isn’t all the mic’s fault. In this video, Chad Wiggins comes clean, and reveals that feedback is an acoustic conspiracy.
Shure SM58 Myths 4 – Proximity Effect
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzfx55aTWBI
Get up close and personal with an SM58, and the sound gets all warm and deep. It’s called ‘proximity effect’. In this video, Shure’s Chad Wiggins explains that this is perfectly normal – and how a savvy singer can use it creatively.

NW-700 vs. NW-800 vs. NW-1500 Comparison (Versus Series)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4G24U5fTZ4
Comments:
NW 700 sounds best across the board to me. NW 800 sounded worse with the electric guitar. NW 1500 sounds kinda muffled.
Been using my NW 700 since just after this video came out. Still going strong to this day. I’m glad I chose it over the NW 800 and NW 1500. Although after taking the mic apart it seems the little condenser module is just pushed into a plasic part screwed to the body. So any vibrations that makes it to the body though the cable or though the shock mount makes a slight clunking noise. So I unscrewed the plastic part and glued a small square of foam between it and the body. Now the mic has much less issues with vibration.
nw700 is the best, it picks up the widest range of frequencies and is a much truer sound.
The 700 is visibly different from the 800 and 1500. In a distance of 2 feet, they are almost the same, but with the guitars sound they are totally different. For me the 1500 gets more low/bass frequencies, so they would be applied to different using. The only one that sounds bad for me is the 700 (not good at all). If you like more a bass sound, the 1500 sounds better, but the 800 sounds more “versatile”.
For me, the guitar part, the 700 had a slight garbly (overdrive?) sound, while the 800 seemed cleaner.
The nw-700 sounded the best not just because I ordered one that’s seriously what I think
I choose the nw 800, thank you very much :)
After the BM-8000 won the BM competition and the NW-800 won the NW competition then do a video of:
BM-8000 VS NW-800
Ran these recorded tests through a compressor and got a better sense of the differences. NW800 had more high frequency harmonic distortion while NW1500 had more mid frequency harmonic distortion. Neither were particularly pleasent. The NW700 had very little harmonic distortion at all and was the most transparent sounding (least colored). The NW1500 did tame sibilants (“S” sounds) better than the others, but probably due to its unnatural sounding high frequency pattern.
To me yea sounded the same. I just got the nw-700 for doing voice overs on my channel.
I think this is one of the better reviews on this mic. I
just ordered the neewer nw 800 seen so many reviews were it went up against hundred dollar mics like the blue yeti, even thousand dollar mics and it was so much cleaner and better i could not believe it on amazon you can get the whole kit for 19.99!!! but be sure to get the power supply they have them for 15$ and its the neewer brand phantom
nw-700 = nw-800 , nw-1500 sound much clear
basically the same mic for different prices.
I got a bm 700 and don’t have phantom power but I will be using a xlr to 3.5mm jack will it sound fine?
Plugging directly into computer, chances are it will not sound good. Try getting SYBA USB SOUNDCARD.

NOISY PREAMPS BEGONE! Fethead and Fethead Phantoms save the day.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woHH_I68ZlM
The FetHead Phantom passes phantom power to the mic, so it shouldn’t be used with any type of dynamic mic, especially ribbon mics. The original FetHead still needs phantom power but doesn’t transmit it to the mic. That’s kind of the entire point of this thread.
Could be an upsell technique? If you buy the Fethead phantom blocker and use Gorilla tape on the thing so you never take it off, then you’ll never have to worry
It should be noted that there are at least some dynamic mics which are fine with being fed Phantom power – Shure SM7B and SM57/58 for example (see for yourself on shure.com)

Blue Ribbon Microphone
https://hackaday.com/2016/05/02/blue-ribbon-microphone/
If you’ve ever seen an old movie or TV show where there was a radio announcer, you’ve probably seen a ribbon microphone. The RCA 44 (see Edmund Lowe, on right) had exceptional sound quality and are still valued today in certain applications. The name ribbon microphone is because the sound pickup is literally a thin strip of aluminum or other conductive material.
Unlike other common microphones, ribbons pick up high frequencies much better due to the high resonant frequency of the metallic ribbon. This is not only better in general, but it means the ribbon mic has a flatter frequency response even at lower frequencies. Another unique feature is that the microphone is bidirectional, hearing sounds from the front or back equally well. It is possible to build them with other directional patterns, although you rarely see that in practice.
In the early 1920s, Walter Schottky and Erwin Gerlach developed the ribbon microphone (and, coincidentally, the first ribbon loudspeaker).
Harry Olson at RCA developed a ribbon mic that used coils and permanent magnets which led to the RCA Photophone Type PB-31 in 1931. Because of their superior audio response, they were instant hits and Radio City Music Hall started using the PB-31 in 1932. A newer version appeared in 1933, the 44A, which reduced reverberation.
The BBC and Marconi also made similar microphones including the Type A and the Coles 4038. The Russian version was the Oktava. Although the technology is nearly one hundred years old, many sound engineers still use ribbons because of the fidelity of the recording.

It’s sad that it sounds better than 90% of gaming headset mics.
Not really. It’s omnidirectional so it will pick up EVERYTHING in the room. Headset mics attempt to cancel that noise out which degrades their audio quality.
