    Silicon Labs recently announced an expansion of its Wi-Fi portfolio of modules and transceivers specifically designed for end-node products. The new products address some of the biggest challenges in wireless designs — power efficiency, RF blocking performance, and security. The Wireless Gecko portfolio is designed for a variety of connected IoT devices such as battery-operated IP security cameras, point-of-sale scanners, and personal medical devices.

    The Wireless Gecko portfolio cuts Wi-Fi power consumption in half compared to competitive products, according to the company, by providing best-in-class transmit current (138 mA), receive current (48 mA), and sleep current (<40 µA). In addition, high throughput and fewer retransmissions allow designs to use less channel capacity, further reducing power consumption.

    The Silicon Labs Wi-Fi portfolio features three modules — the WF200 transceiver IC (which works with a variety of 8-bit to Linux-based processors) for pre-existing high volume designs; the pre-certified WFM200 Wi-Fi system-in-package (SiP) module with an operating temperature range of –40°C to 105°C, making it suitable for outdoor and industrial applications; and the pre-certified WGM160P module, aimed at cloud-connected IoT devices, with 512K RAM and 2-MB flash memory, onboard Gecko microcontroller, integrated antenna, and peripheral capabilities.

    OpenWrt is an excellent open-source platform for routers that are highly customizable with much more in the way of security options (VPN packages, advanced encryption tools, etc.) over the mainstream firmware that’s packaged with off-the-shelf routers. There are plenty of routers on the market that support OpenWrt

    Cheap and portable probably aren’t the best words to describe GL.inet’s GL-USB150 Microrouter, but it costs just $30, and you can carry it in your pocket. While it does look like a USB thumb drive, it’s anything but, as the router comes packed with a Qualcomm QCA9331 SoC

    While the GL-USB150 can be used as an open source OpenWrt router, it can also be employed for ‘penetration testing,’

    When plugged into a PC or laptop, the GL-USB150 registers itself as an Ethernet device and becomes the default route to access a network.

    MicroPython unveiled their new Pyboard D board earlier this year at FOSDEM 2019, which is designed to complement the Pyboard original, although you don’t need it to use the D series. For those not in the loop, MicroPython is a lightweight version of Python 3 optimized to run on microcontrollers, which is described as a ByteCode + virtual machine + file system compiler for the BareMetal OS implemented on the microcontroller.

    CS32 comes with an Arm Cortex-M3 core clocked at 72 MHz, 64 to 128KB flash, and 20 KB RAM. A datasheet and user manual are available but only in Chinese. Several STM32duino members suspect it’s an actual copy of STM32 without modifications. What’s unclear is whether it’s a pirated copy, or a properly licensed one.

    MINHF4 is an Arduino-compatible in a Feather form factor.

    Adafruit Feather M0 and I absolutely love it. However, it needs some upgrades that I think it is worth it:

    First, the main controller is an ATSAMD21G18, a pretty powerful microcontroller, but it does not have 5V Tolerant Pins. This can be an issue when I want it to directly connect it to 5V devices such as HC SR04.

    Second, it uses an AP2112K LDO. This is not very efficient when using it with LIPO or LI-Ion Battery.

    Third, in case of me wanting to go low level programming, or just debugging purpose, I have to buy a separate SWD Programmer such as Atmel ICE or JLINK. And Atmel ICE only supports its SAM variants.

    That’s why I created this project: the MINHF4

    The main microcontroller used in MINHF4 is an STM32F411CE; it runs at 100MHz, has 128kB RAM and 512kB Flash and use ARM – Cortex M4F. Except PA0, PA4, PA5 and PB5 pins, the rests are 5V Tolerant. It is better if I want to directly connect it to 5V devices such as HC SR04 Ultrasonic Sensor.

    Instead of using an LDO on Feather system, MINHF4 has a buck – boost converter, TPS63000. It is more efficient and suitable for battery powered projects.
