What to expect from CES 2019

CES is the world’s gathering place for all those who thrive on the business of consumer technologies. It has served as the proving ground for innovators and breakthrough technologies for 50 year.

This year CES 2019 is held January 8-11 at Las Vegas. So the show starts tomorrow. And some press events by some companies seem to start already today.

Owned and produced by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), it attracts the world’s business leaders and leading companies.  This year CES showcases more than 4,500 exhibiting companies, including manufacturers, developers and suppliers of consumer technology hardware, content, technology delivery systems and more.

What to expect at CES?

Here are some of my picks what new to expect:

LG and Samsung are going to introduce 8K image resolution TV products at CES 2019. The attractiveness of 8K products is hampered not only by the high price but also by the fact that content produced with 8K accuracy is not yet widely available. LG is adding artificial intelligence to signal processing on TVs.

The most revolutionary innovations in mobile technology are expected to be 5G and foldable phone displays. Samsung, LG and Royolen expected to say something about the forthcoming fold-phone market CES. 5G technology is to be featured in several speeches, and at the fair twenty companies present 5G products and services.

For the first time last year, Google, which was impressively represented at CES, is expected to have an outperformance last year this year. I expect to see smart phones and IoT products from Google.

Vizio’s CTO Bill Baxter on the Vergecast

CES is always a show about the future of TVs, and this year is particularly interesting. Not only are 4K HDR TVs better and cheaper than ever, but the software side of things is opening up in unprecedented ways. Not only are Google Assistant and Alexa control everywhere, but Apple’s embracing the TV industry for the first time: Vizio and LG TVs will support AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, while Samsung TVs will get an iTunes Movies & TV app, as well as AirPlay 2 support.

And we definitely talked about the pervasive ad tracking that all smart TVs do — especially after I noticed the new Vizio P-Series in my parents’ house seems to ping the network an awful lot. Baxter told me that he thinks Vizio is the industry leader in disclosing what tracking is happening and letting users opt in or out during setup, and that he’s fine if people choose to turn it off. But he was also clear that TV companies are in a cutthroat business, and that companies like Vizio would have to charge higher prices for hardware if they didn’t run content, advertising, and data businesses.

The new Anker PowerPort Atom PD 1 offers 30w charging in a package the size of a phone charger. It’s basically a 1.5-inch cube — if the plugs are ignored, of course. And it’s only $30.

offers the same power delivery found in Apple’s much larger 30w USB-C charger: 5V @ 3A, 9V @ 3A, 15V @ 2A, 20V @ 1.5A. That’s good enough to recharge any phone, tablets including the new iPad Pro and small laptops including the new 13-inch MacBook Air.

Anker employed Gallium Nitride instead of Silicon, which allowed the company to drastically reduce the size of the components.

    It’s a 7.8-inch device that runs Android.

When you fold the AMOLED display, there’s still a small gap between the two halves of the screen. But it’s also much smaller than the unfolded version. It’s a bulky phone, but it’s still much easier to store in a purse compared to a tablet.

You can already buy a developer version of the device if you live in the U.S. for around $1,300. It runs Android

Royole unveils FlexPai, a hybrid device that measures 7.8 inches in tablet form and becomes two Android phones when closed; available now in China for ~$1,320

The world’s first foldable phone is charmingly awful
    You asked for this
    https://www.theverge.com/2019/1/8/18174278/royole-flexpai-foldable-phone-android-ces-2019

The Royole FlexPai is the sort of device that companies rush out when they feel the absolute imperative to be first with some new technology. I don’t blame Royole — a five-year-old company literally founded for the purpose of developing and selling flexible displays — because it faced the existential threat of Samsung coming in and stealing its thunder with a rival foldable device. So Royole hurriedly threw the FlexPai together and let the world gawk at its wondrous, foldable awfulness.

Yes, Royole is apparently a hyper-ambitious company. It provides two SIM slots and tries to provide an auto-detection system that only shows content on the half of the folded screen that you’re facing at any given time.

You get a 1920 x 1440 resolution on the full display, which shrinks to less than half when you’re in phone mode

Still, a 308ppi pixel density is sufficient for the screen to look reasonably sharp.

The biggest failure of the FlexPai is, predictably, its software and basic operation. Any time you rotate the device or fold / unfold it, it gets deeply confused and freaked out. I saw apps stacking on top of each other and overlapping with widgets as the tablet was transitioning into phone mode. I launched the camera accidentally more than once. There’s nothing intuitive about the automatic switch between the two phones.

CES Unveiled: Good, Bread and Unexpected
    https://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1334152

“Connectivity” has defined a host of consumer electronics devices trotted out at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) over the last 10 years. Whether consumer devices are connected to social media or Netflix, Internet connectivity has played a critical role in developing features, applications and services. In fact, connectivity gave birth to a new normal in the consumer electronics industry. Today, apps and services determine the success of consumer products.

The CE industry, however, will be moving from the connectivity age into “the data age” in the next decade, predicted Steve Koening, vice president of market research at the Consumer Technology Association (CTA).

Discussing CES 2019 Trends to Watch, Koening suggested that it will be data and its analytics that define the quality of consumer products. More and more, users make decisions backed up by data. Data is emerging as the “common denominator” among products, he said.

Most evident at CES this year is an unmistakable trend toward voice and AI-based digital assistants.

Intel Tips ‘Ice Lake’ 10nm PC Processor
    https://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1334158

Intel uncorked a small geyser of news at the Consumer Electronics Show, including word of the company’s first volume 10nm PC processor — which will be called Ice Lake — discussion of a new hybrid CPU architecture that combines different types of CPU cores in a single system on a chip (SOC) and the introduction of a new chip aimed at inference-based AI applications.

Intel also announced a new chip designed specifically to perform edge computing duties inside 5G base stations and introduced six new members of its 9th Gen iCore processor family. The company also disclosed a collaboration with Comcast to develop a 10 Gbps cable modem and a new effort to expand the PC market called Project Athena.

    iCore, Ice Lake and Lakefield

The company announced six new 9th Gen Intel Core (iCore) processors. The first of the new devices is expected to be available starting this month with other versions rolling out through the second quarter of this year. Intel is highlighting game system performance with this line.

Intel also announced a new hybrid system on a chip (SoC) approach that allow a new processor that Intel is calling “Lakefield.” The SoCs are “hybrid” in that they can incorporate different types of cores with each other. The example Bryant showed was an SoC with five cores — one 10nm Sunny Cove-based core with four Atom processors.

The SoC relies on the company’s new Foveros architecture, which enables Intel to physically stack IP blocks one above the other. This architecture drives longer battery life and improved performance, the company says, and leads to smaller chips and smaller boards.

To that latter point, Bryant held up a PC motherboard with a Lakefield SoC; the board measured perhaps 2 inches by 5.5 inches (that’s an eyeball estimate from the cheap seats) which he declared is “the smallest ever entire PC motherboard.”

The Lakefield chip will be in production later this year.

Project Athena is a program in which Intel vows to help develop a new class of advanced laptops and perhaps other client devices in other configurations. The company promised these products would have world-class performance and extended battery life.

Project Athena partners include Acer, Asus, Dell, Google, HP, Innolux, Lenovo, Microsoft, Samsung and Sharp, among others. The company said the first Project Athena laptops are expected to be available in the second half of this year across both Windows and Chrome operating systems.

Navin Shenoy, Intel executive vice president in the Data Center Group, announced the Intel Nervana Neural Network Processor for Inference (NNP-I). To review, AI problems come in two general categories: learning and inference. Inference is more complex, is much harder to do, and because of that tends to be done much less frequently.

In 2016, Intel bought Nervana Systems for $400 million, assuming — like everyone else — that AI would eventually be built into a great many products and systems. On Monday, Intel announced that the NNP-I will go into production later this year.

Where might this chip be used? Facebook, Shenoy reminded, is one of Intel’s development partners on the NNP-I. Facebook currently uses inference for auto-tagging.

Also in AI, Intel is working with Alibaba on a system that uses simple video to capture movement. The first application will be to analyze athletes’ performance.

Yet another new chip Intel announced was a 10nm-based network system on chip (SoC), code-named “Snow Ridge” developed specifically for 5G wireless base stations.

Many advanced 5G applications require exceedingly low latencies for real-time processing to support any number of applications; a common example is supporting autonomous vehicles. The trend had been to ship processing tasks off to distant data centers, but these new applications requiring lower latency requires placing more computational resources locally — at the network edge.

Nokian taannoin omistama HERE-paikannusyritys on lyöttäytynyt yhteen Amazonin kanssa tuodakseen Alexa-puheohjauksen autonavigointiin. Ideana on helpottaa puheohjauksen navigoinnin tuomista uusiin autoihin valmiin alustan avulla.

Royole Flex Pai Hands-On: The world’s first real foldable phone at CES 2019
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCHGPuhg0Ys

Unbeknownst to most of the world, Royole has quietly been working to pioneer and perfect its own flexible screens since 2012, and its new FlexPai smartphone represents something of a coming-out party.

Before we go any further, though, we need to get a few things straight. Yes, this is a real product that you can buy right now. Yes, this basically unknown company beat Samsung to market with a foldable smartphone. And yes, it actually works.

The foldable Royole FlexPai has a way to go
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33iWJOBNL2o

The Royole Flexpai is officially the world’s first foldable phone, but its maker has achieved the feat by rushing the device out to market before it’s ready. The threat of Samsung and Huawei stealing the small company’s thunder was simply too much to resist, and that’s how we ended up with the unfinished, unpolished Flexpai at CES 2019.
