Electrical substation videos

Electrical power is amazing and dangerous at high voltages. Electrical substation is a part of an electrical generation, transmission, and distribution system that transform voltage from high to low, or the reverse, or control the flow of electrical power. Substations may be owned and operated by an electrical utility, or may be owned by a large industrial or commercial customer.     The IFD is a sensor that detects and indicates internal arcing faults in pole mounted and pad mounted distribution transformers and voltage regulators. The sensor releases a highly visible orange signal that informs line workers the transformer has an internal fault and needs to be replaced. No signal, no fault. The IFD always saves time whether it activates or not.

    This is a lightning arrester from an 11kV power distribution line with an interesting feature to clear itself electrically when sustained current flows through it.
    Inside a robust fibreglass insulated core is a stack of MOV’s (Metal Oxide Varistors) which have a combined voltage to handle the regular peak voltage of the 11kV supply (presumably 15.5kV peak) plus a safety margin. However, when a higher voltage transient occurs on the line the MOV voltage is exceeded and they temporarily develop a lower resistance which shunts the transient to ground to protect other components on the line.
    If an excessive over-voltage occurs or the MOVs start to break down after passing a modest amount of transients then there is a disconnecter attached to the bottom of the unit that will literally detonate and blow the ground cable off the end of the unit for safety. The primary function of this is to prevent the lightning arrester from passing significant current from the normal 11kV supply when it fails.

    Last night we had an emergency shutdown on a SD1 oil switch unit in which an 11kV cable was discharging through the insulation to Earth.
    Electricity.
    Over the years the ground has moved and put pressure on the cables and insulation slowly deteriorated to a point that the risk of a blow out was possible.
    A preventative emergency shutdown was arranged for the night and the fault fixed.

    It is important that people in the industry know the types of sound associated with potential problems.
