Electrical substation videos

Electrical power is amazing and dangerous at high voltages. Electrical substation is a part of an electrical generation, transmission, and distribution system that transform voltage from high to low, or the reverse, or control the flow of electrical power. Substations may be owned and operated by an electrical utility, or may be owned by a large industrial or commercial customer. Generally substations are unattended, relying on SCADA for remote supervision and control. Here is a collection of videos on electrical substations:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCdsfj_Nlhk

The IFD is a sensor that detects and indicates internal arcing faults in pole mounted and pad mounted distribution transformers and voltage regulators. The sensor releases a highly visible orange signal that informs line workers the transformer has an internal fault and needs to be replaced. No signal, no fault. The IFD always saves time whether it activates or not.

Power Transformer Testing – Automatically measuring ratio and winding resistance of all taps/phases
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBPSY88mND0

When manufacturers perform ratio and winding resistance tests at the end of the production process or during factory acceptance testing, time is costly and performing such tests efficiently is crucial. When performing diagnostic tests on site, there’s also a limited window of time. The CPC 100 and the CP SB1 switchbox make ratio and winding resistance measurements efficient by avoiding climbing up and down the transformer repeatedly and reducing connection errors.

11kV lightning arrestor and exploding disconnecter.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1NM6rlSwqA

This is a lightning arrester from an 11kV power distribution line with an interesting feature to clear itself electrically when sustained current flows through it.
Inside a robust fibreglass insulated core is a stack of MOV’s (Metal Oxide Varistors) which have a combined voltage to handle the regular peak voltage of the 11kV supply (presumably 15.5kV peak) plus a safety margin. However, when a higher voltage transient occurs on the line the MOV voltage is exceeded and they temporarily develop a lower resistance which shunts the transient to ground to protect other components on the line.
If an excessive over-voltage occurs or the MOVs start to break down after passing a modest amount of transients then there is a disconnecter attached to the bottom of the unit that will literally detonate and blow the ground cable off the end of the unit for safety. The primary function of this is to prevent the lightning arrester from passing significant current from the normal 11kV supply when it fails.

Transformer Testing – Transformer Test and their Procedure

For confirming the specifications and performances of an electrical power transformer it has to go through numbers of testing procedures.

    Power Transformer Testing
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4L0ch0-Paq8

Power transformers transform electrical energy from one voltage level to another – by stepping voItages up for transmission to minimize losses, or down for distribution. During regular operation, and in particular during an electrical fault, power transformers are subject to electrical, mechanical, thermal, and environmental stresses. Therefore utilities and service providers test power transformers, in order to assess their condition, schedule maintenance work and plan their replacement.
