Electrical substation videos

Electrical power is amazing and dangerous at high voltages. Electrical substation is a part of an electrical generation, transmission, and distribution system that transform voltage from high to low, or the reverse, or control the flow of electrical power. Substations may be owned and operated by an electrical utility, or may be owned by a large industrial or commercial customer. Generally substations are unattended, relying on SCADA for remote supervision and control. Here is a collection of videos on electrical substations:

Tree branch touching a 22000 Volts power line
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4jZBy5DMX8

In this demo I show what could happen when a tree or tree branch touches a live overhead line.
    22000 Volts 50 Hertz
Initially some current start flowing to ground, steam develops in the branch and carbon tracking occurs, which increases the current flow.
At some stage the current will get the whole lot on fire and current increases till a protective earth fault relay trips the supply.
Often power – lines will re-liven again multiple times so always stay well clear and notify the local power authority.
On a feeder line, when the tree becomes fully conductive, a massive flash-over occurs at High Voltage and several hundred or even thousands of Amps.
The risk of step potential is very significant nearby the base of the tree and up to several meters away. e.g. a Voltage of many thousands of Volts between each meter of ground away from the tree stem.

    Testing voltage transformers
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEvk-A5Qb-o

Voltage transformers are used around the clock throughout the energy grid, and their life span can reach up to 40 years. During that time, the effects of aging, regular operation, network faults, or external influences may affect the integrity of a voltage transformer. Utilities perform various tests during commissioning and maintenance to find any irregularities that have been caused by transportation, installation or daily operation.

What is the electrical Potential transformer (PT) working principle? how does single-phase voltage control transformer works? and its concept is explained in this video tutorial. A potential transformer is basically an instrument transformer and it is generally a single phase electrical transformer with high voltage ratio accuracy. But it operates and designed for less power. Potential transformer (PT) types, applications, specification, tests, accuracy class, phase shift error, response time, the equivalent circuit is explained in the lecture. Voltage ratio calibration for control purpose, also called the control transformer, Capacitor type voltage transformer ( CVT ) function as PT is explained in English in transformer tutorial.

    PSO ELECTRICITY TRAINING VIDEO

This was an amazing fault! In my 27-year professional practice, I have never seen an electrical fault lasting this long. The 34kV system seemed to be designed as an ungrounded system or grounded through an impedance. Therefore, this ground fault current would have been limited to a lower value. (I don’t believe there was a phase-to-phase short circuit as the p-p fault would result in much higher fault current which would burnt the line quickly) The low fault current didn’t blow the fuse or caused protection trip. However, this fault would result in local GPR (ground potential rise) increasing. The household electricity is a grounded system. The increased GPR hence damaged the nearby household electrical system through the grounding wire. There were design deficiencies in this 34kV system, e.g. phase-selection ground protection or other alternative protection should be equipped for this system.

Welcome to the Department of Redundancy Dept.

This protection tube doesnt protect anything, therefore another protection tube is applied. Now its time to apply another protection tube to protect the previous two protection tubes. And finally a protection tube is applied on to the previous 3 protection tubes which doesnt protect the connection very well.

What was the cost of making that splice? $1000

Mike Folgers A lot! But think about what can happen if that splice would fail in the real world. Cost of digging, troubleshooting, splicing again and repaying the damage done to whoevers property this would fail on.

That’s nothing when you’re talking about vital power distribution systems… If you wanna use a giant butt connector you can do that.. but if you want it to last and be as strong as the wire surrounding it, you gotta do it right.

Haha, “How to spend $300 plus half an hour on a single joint”. Oh, and don’t forget to join a “Training” before you use our tape… Incredible, just incredible!

Step 1: apply a layer of protective tape.
Step 2: apply a layer of protective tape over the protective tape.
Step 3: use tape to protect the last layer.
Step 4: use some tape to seal things done in step 3.
    Step 4: use more tape.
    Tape 5: tape.tape.tape.

    Comments:

This is an 11kV installation. Some installers would class this as Medium voltage and others would class it as High voltage, this is influenced by what voltage / network / accessory they are used to working on.

There is no reason during an installation why there should be an excessive mechanical load (tension) applied to the braid. This method has been used by 3M for over 30 years now and no failures have occurred due to the loss of an earth on the termination due to it losing connection in this manner. If you would like any more information regarding the 3M product range please do not hesitate to ask. Thanks.

The world’s first transformer, which Siemens developed and manufactured for high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission systems with what is currently the highest transmission voltage of ± 1,100 kilovolts (kV). The workflows for manufacturing and testing this product were challenging due to the transformer’s extreme dimensions (LxWxH: 37.5 m x 12.0 m x 14.5 m) and shipped to China where the transformer will enable a high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission with low losses over a record distance of 3,284 kilometers with a transmission capacity of 12 gigawatts.

The voltage you get at the end of an unconnected line is caused by the Ferranti effect. Without a load or a very small one, the voltage shoots through the roof. Its cause not just by the capacitance of the line but also the inductance.
