MWC canceled because of Coronavirus COVID-19

I was planning to write some article on the mobile trends on this year based on news-feed from MWC 2020 mobile event. It seems that I have to change those plans because of this news that was just published:

The GSMA, the organization behind MWC, the world’s largest mobile trade show, has announced that it is officially canceling the show.

“The GSMA has cancelled MWC Barcelona 2020 because the global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event,”

Worried that your iPhone is a coronavirus transmission vector? Apple now says you can clean it with isopropyl alcohol wipes or Clorox disinfecting wipes.

In Response To Coronavirus, Apple Updates iPhone Cleaning Guidelines
    http://on.forbes.com/61811qdlP

Apple has always cautioned customers to use care when cleaning its products. A soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth (with a little soap and water for extreme cases) has been the recommended approach for years. With the iPhone and iPad, especially, the company warned that harsh cleaning chemicals could strip off the oleophobic — oil repellent — coating that reduces fingerprints on their displays.

With the coronavirus outbreak spreading, and news that the virus could potentially survive on surfaces for up to nine days, smartphones are suddenly ground zero as targets for disinfection. We already knew that smartphones are filthier than the average toilet seat, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that people are worried that gentle wiping with soapy water isn’t going to cut it.

“Using a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, you may gently wipe the hard, nonporous surfaces of your Apple product, such as the display, keyboard, or other exterior surfaces. Don’t use bleach. Avoid getting moisture in any opening, and don’t submerge your Apple product in any cleaning agents. Don’t use on fabric or leather surfaces.

Who Knew? The Reusable Coffee Cup in the Age of Coronavirus Is a Really Bad Idea
    https://www.designnews.com/medical/who-knew-reusable-coffee-cup-age-coronavirus-really-bad-idea/40511102262575?ADTRK=InformaMarkets&elq_mid=12608&elq_cid=876648

Just when the “greens” thought they’d won over the giant coffee industry and Starbucks, in particular, with its reusable coffee cup campaign, to rid the world of single-use plastics, along came the coronavirus. According to articles on several news sites, Starbucks has banned customers from bringing their reusable cups into the stores for refills because of the pandemic.

The coffee chain’s spokesman in Europe, Robert Lynch, commented that the move to ban reusable/refillable personal coffee cups brought in from outside UK stores was made “out of an abundance of caution,” according to the BBC. Yahoo news ran a story from the AFP that the reusable cups which are “in vogue” for their eco-friendliness are not welcome in U.S. stores “over fears of the coronavirus.”

A Starbucks spokesman told the AFP that “the decision to ban reusable cups was made over concerns for ‘health and well-being’ and the company is ‘optimistic this will be a temporary situation.’”

The BBC news item quoted a hygiene expert, who said “containing the virus should be a greater priority than environmental concerns.”

Not to trivialize the pandemic, but hey, maybe the coronavirus will spread some common sense. Let’s face it—it’s not just the coronavirus we should be worried about. Like the many viruses that have plagued civilizations around the world for millennia, coronavirus will subside until it’s no longer front-page news. But that doesn’t mean that other germs — bacteria and viruses — aren’t lurking around waiting for a chance to get a foothold.

    https://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/covid19-symptoms-take-on-average-five-days-to-show-study-reveals/

As case numbers around the world continue to rise, scientists are working hard to better understand the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, that causes the respiratory illness COVID-19. The latest research to be published has estimated a median incubation period, ie the time between exposure to the new coronavirus and when symptoms are displayed, of 5.1 days. This means it takes on average five days before people show any signs they may have been infected after coming into contact with someone who has the virus, lending support to the recommended 14-day quarantine period that is currently being used by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other public health bodies.

Here’s How COVID-19 Attacks The Human Body
    https://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/heres-how-covid19-attacks-the-human-body/

COVID-19 is “similar to but distinct from” severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), allowing scientists to use what is known about SARS to inform knowledge about novel coronavirus. Just like the flu, COVID-19 begins in the lungs and spreads via water droplets when a person sneezes or coughs. (COVID-19 may also spread through poop but further research is still needed.) The WHO reported that SARS attacked the body in three phases: viral replication, immune hyperactivity, and pulmonary destruction, which appears to be similar to how COVID-19 attacks.

    https://yle.fi/uutiset/3-11246000?utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=yleuutiset&utm_medium=social

Maailmalla leviävä koronavirus on sukua sarsille.

Lumio muistuttaa myös sata vuotta sitten riehuneesta espanjantaudista. Australia yritti estää taudin rantautumisen sulkemalla rajansa.

The global lockdown inspired by the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, has shuttered factories and reduced travel, slashing lethal pollution including the greenhouse gases that are heating the climate.

The lockdown may save more lives from pollution reduction than are threatened by the virus itself, said François Gemenne, director of The Hugo Observatory, which studies the interactions between environmental changes, human migration, and politics.

“Strangely enough, I think the death toll of the coronavirus at the end of the day might be positive, if you consider the deaths from atmospheric pollution,” said Gemenne, citing, for example, the 84,000 people who die annually in France because of atmospheric pollution and the more than one million in China.
