Just when the “greens” thought they’d won over the giant coffee industry and Starbucks, in particular, with its reusable coffee cup campaign, to rid the world of single-use plastics, along came the coronavirus. According to articles on several news sites, Starbucks has banned customers from bringing their reusable cups into the stores for refills because of the pandemic.
The coffee chain’s spokesman in Europe, Robert Lynch, commented that the move to ban reusable/refillable personal coffee cups brought in from outside UK stores was made “out of an abundance of caution,” according to the BBC. Yahoo news ran a story from the AFP that the reusable cups which are “in vogue” for their eco-friendliness are not welcome in U.S. stores “over fears of the coronavirus.”
A Starbucks spokesman told the AFP that “the decision to ban reusable cups was made over concerns for ‘health and well-being’ and the company is ‘optimistic this will be a temporary situation.’”
The BBC news item quoted a hygiene expert, who said “containing the virus should be a greater priority than environmental concerns.”
Not to trivialize the pandemic, but hey, maybe the coronavirus will spread some common sense. Let’s face it—it’s not just the coronavirus we should be worried about. Like the many viruses that have plagued civilizations around the world for millennia, coronavirus will subside until it’s no longer front-page news. But that doesn’t mean that other germs — bacteria and viruses — aren’t lurking around waiting for a chance to get a foothold.

Sosiaali- ja terveysministeriön valmiusjohtaja Pekka Tulokas pitää myös yleisötilaisuuksien rajoittamista Suomessa tarpeettomana, koska tartuntaketjut on pystytty jäljittämään eikä täällä ole tautiryppäitä.

The latest diagnostic comes from CerTest Biotec and Franklin Lakes, NJ-based Becton Dickinson and Company (BD). The duo announced Tuesday the VIASURE SARS-CoV-2 Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Detection Kit had been adapted for the BD Max System and won CE mark for use in Europe.
In a release, the companies said the VIASURE SARS-CoV-2 Real-Time PCR Detection Kit is a real-time reverse transcriptase PCR assay for use on the fully automated BD Max System. It detects SARS-CoV-2 in clinical samples by amplification of a fragment of the S gene of the virus.
“The CerTest-developed kit will bring rapid COVID-19 diagnostic capabilities to many laboratories across Europe which desperately need the ability to quickly identify COVID-19 patients so that proper protocols for infection prevention can be instituted,” Nelson Fernandes, managing director of CerTest BioTec, said in a release.

On Wednesday, U.S. Chief Technology Officer Michael Kratsios convened representatives from a number of the tech’s biggest companies to gameplan a response to the worsening global coronavirus pandemic.
As Politico and the Post reported, the White House is seeking help from Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, IBM, Cisco and Twitter on the efforts.
Major tech companies have been proactive in protecting their own workforces from the coronavirus epidemic, even as a federal response lags. On Tuesday, Google asked all North American employees to work from home, expanding its previous guidance for Washington state-based workers. That same day, Mark Zuckerberg announced that the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative would work with Bay Area health research teams to quadruple the coronavirus testing capacity in the area.

The global lockdown inspired by the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, has shuttered factories and reduced travel, slashing lethal pollution including the greenhouse gases that are heating the climate.
The lockdown may save more lives from pollution reduction than are threatened by the virus itself, said François Gemenne, director of The Hugo Observatory, which studies the interactions between environmental changes, human migration, and politics.
“Strangely enough, I think the death toll of the coronavirus at the end of the day might be positive, if you consider the deaths from atmospheric pollution,” said Gemenne, citing, for example, the 84,000 people who die annually in France because of atmospheric pollution and the more than one million in China.
