Windows 11 is released

Microsoft announces Windows 11, generally available by the holidays
https://techcrunch.com/2021/06/24/microsoft-announces-windows-11-generally-available-by-the-holidays/

Microsoft today officially announced Windows 11, the next version of its desktop operating system.

Microsoft plans to release Windows 11 to the general public by the holidays, so we can probably expect it sometime around late November.

You will now also be able to run Android apps on Windows. These apps will seem like native apps that can be integrated into the taskbar.

Windows 11 will come with Teams built-in.

Microsoft promises better graphics for gaming thanks to Auto HDR, a feature that’s already available on Xbox.

It’s 1999, and my friends and I are surfing warez sites using Internet Explorer on our 98SE gaming rig. Finally we push past the scams and porn to find an FTP server with a list of files labeled “.rar, .r00, .r01, r.02…” But what the hell are these?

“Oh, it’s segmented. You have to download this program to expand those. It’s called WinRAR. Way better than WinZip.”

“Do we have to pay for it?”

“No…but if you’re as cheap as I think you are, it’ll keep bugging you to for a quarter century until, in the grim darkness of 2023, Windows 11 finally supports the format natively.”

Even when you close all the windows from an application on Windows, it might still be running in the background, or the close button might not work at all. Microsoft is trying to address this with a new taskbar feature coming to Windows 11.

Windows users who connect a printer to a PC may notice one of two things: the printer is detected automatically and usable right away, or it is not. It is then necessary in the latter case to go hunting for drivers for that printer to install them manually on the system.

Microsoft Adding New Security Features to Windows 11
    https://www.securityweek.com/microsoft-adding-new-security-features-to-windows-11/
Microsoft announced that the latest Windows 11 update (23H2) will bring more support for passkeys and several new security features.
Microsoft on Tuesday announced the new security features that will be available in the latest version of Windows 11.
Windows 11 feature updates are released in the second half of each calendar year. The latest update, 23H2, is being gradually rolled out to users, with Microsoft expecting the new features to reach all devices by the release of the November 2023 security updates.
However, customers with eligible devices running Windows 11 version 22H2 can get the updates sooner by going to the Windows Update section in Settings and enabling the ‘Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available’ option.
Microsoft said its goal is to simplify and modernize security for IT teams by reducing the attack surface.
The latest Windows 11 update expands support for passkeys, which are replacing passwords to offer enhanced security. Users will be able to use and secure passkeys via their phone or Windows Hello (including Hello for Business), enabling them to sign in to a website or application using a device PIN, their face or their fingerprint.

Sources: internal Microsoft data shows that Windows 11, released in October 2021, passed 400M monthly active devices and is on pace to pass 500M by early 2024

Exclusive: Windows 11 is active on almost half a billion devices, ahead of Microsoft’s expectations
    https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/exclusive-windows-11-is-active-on-almost-half-a-billion-devices-ahead-of-microsofts-expectations

Internal data reveals Windows 11 has been more successful than you might think.

According to my sources who are familiar with the matter, Windows 11 is now in use on over 400 million monthly active devices. Internal Microsoft data seen by Windows Central reveals that Windows 11’s active device usage just recently surpassed 400 million and is steadily climbing to reach half a billion by early 2024.

As noted in our Windows 11 review, the OS has been on the market since October 2021, meaning it’s taken Microsoft around two years to reach 400 million monthly active devices with Windows 11. This is a significantly slower rate than Windows 10, which reached the same number in just over a year (and eventually 1 billion users by early 2020). Still, factoring in both platforms’ very different launch parameters is essential.

Microsoft was also very heavy-handed in getting users upgraded from Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Microsoft details Windows 11 changes coming to the EEA to comply with the DMA, like letting users disable Bing web search, add search providers, and remove Edge — Microsoft will soon let Windows 11 users in the European Economic Area (EEA) disable its Bing web search, remove Microsoft Edge …

The EU will finally free Windows users from Bing
/ Here’s how Windows 11 is changing in Europe to comply with new regulations.
    https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/16/23963579/microsoft-windows-11-eu-digital-markets-act-feature-changes

Microsoft will soon let Windows 11 users in the European Economic Area (EEA) disable its Bing web search, remove Microsoft Edge, and even add custom web search providers — including Google if it’s willing to build one — into its Windows Search interface.

All of these Windows 11 changes are part of key tweaks that Microsoft has to make to its operating system to comply with the European Commission’s Digital Markets Act, which comes into effect in March 2024. Microsoft will be required to meet a slew of interoperability and competition rules, including allowing users “to easily un-install pre-installed apps or change default settings on operating systems, virtual assistants, or web browsers that steer them to the products and services of the gatekeeper and provide choice screens for key services.”

Alongside clearly marking which apps are system components in Windows 11, Microsoft is also responding by adding the ability to uninstall the following apps:

    Camera
    Cortana
Web Search from Microsoft Bing, in the EEA
    Microsoft Edge, in the EEA
    Photos

Only Windows 11 users in the EEA will be able to fully remove Microsoft Edge and the Bing-powered web search from Windows Search. Microsoft could easily extend this to all Windows 11 users, but it’s limiting this extra functionality to EEA markets to comply with the rules.
