My new ARM v9 article

ARM is the world’s most popular RISC processor architecture, widely used in embedded systems in addition to mobile phones and small computers. The latest is 64-bit ARM v9. At the same time, competitors are tuning in their own competing versions.

The first ARM v9 based smart phone chips have just been released: MediaTek Dimensity 9000 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Here is a special article with links written by me. The article is written in Finnish language.

Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro debut with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipsets, Xiaomi 12X comes with SD870

After months of leaks and rumors, Xiaomi’s 12 series is now official with three entries – Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12 Pro and Xiaomi 12X. The vanilla model takes a more compact approach with its 6.28-inch screen while still fitting the very best Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. The 12 Pro bumps up the size to 6.73-inches and also boasts the same SoC but it also adds an LTPO AMOLED display, bigger battery, faster charging and more capable camera hardware. The more budget-oriented Xiaomi 12X comes with the Snapdragon 870 SoC and similar size and specs to the Xiaomi 12.

Samsung, which had announced a January 11 event for the Exynos 2200, didn’t show up to its own product launch and has yet to provide an explanation — The Exynos 2200 was supposed to launch on January 11. It didn’t. Nobody knows why. — So here’s a crazy story.

Samsung no-showed on its major Exynos 2200 launch and won’t say why

So here’s a crazy story. Samsung was supposed to have a big SoC launch today, but that launch did not happen. Samsung didn’t cancel or delay the event. The January 11 date was announced, and we even wrote about it, but when the time for the event came, nothing happened! Samsung pulled a no-call no-show for a major product launch. It’s the end of the day now, and the company has yet to respond to what must be hundreds of press inquiries that are no-doubt flooding its email inbox, including ours! Samsung stood up the entire tech industry, and now it won’t say why. Nobody knows what is going on.

The Exynos 2200 was (?) shaping up to be a major launch for Samsung. It is, after all, the first Samsung SoC with the headline-grabbing feature of having an AMD GPU. The two companies announced this deal a year ago, and we’ve been giddy about it ever since. The Exynos 2200 is (or was) going to debut in the Galaxy S22. That launch event is currently scheduled for February 8, assuming Samsung doesn’t ghost everyone again.

Samsung announced the Exynos 2200 event just 12 days ago, saying, “Stay tuned for the next Exynos with the new GPU born from RDNA 2. January 11, 2022.” (RDNA 2 is an AMD GPU architecture).

With no official word on what is going on, we can only turn to the rumor mill for answers, which is currently on fire. You should take this next bit with a grain of salt, but on January 10—before it was clear there would be no Exynos event—plugged-in Samsung leaker Ice Universe tweeted that “Samsung postponed the release of Exynos2200.” Another leaker, Dohyun Kim claims Exynos 2200 will be removed from the Galaxy S22 lineup entirely. Rather than the usual split of Exynos for some regions and a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip for other regions, every Galaxy S22 would use a Snapdragon chip. How Samsung could ever do this a month before launch is unclear, but we’ll have to see what the actual S22 ship date is.

Samsung’s Exynos division has struggled for years, and the AMD deal was supposed to be its big comeback. An exciting, powerful GPU with desktop Radeon branding would have turned heads. Samsung’s marketing team was already pushing the gaming angle, though, and this would be an awkward marketing job since not every region would have gotten the Exynos chip.

Samsung unveils its 4nm Exynos 2200 SoC with an Xclipse GPU using AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture, offering hardware-accelerated ray tracing and variable rate shading — The processor packs Samsung’s own Xclipse GPU based on AMD RDNA 2 architecture that the South Korean company says will offer …

The processor packs Samsung’s own Xclipse GPU based on AMD RDNA 2 architecture that the South Korean company says will offer a console-level gaming experience in smartphones.

Samsung said on Tuesday that it has begun mass production of its new mobile application processor Exynos 2200, which may be powering the upcoming Galaxy S22 series of smartphones.

The chip, made with the company’s 4-nanometre EUV node, sports a new GPU called Xclipse based on AMD RDNA 2 architecture, which Samsung said would offer a “console-level” gaming experience in smartphones.

According to the South Korean tech giant, Xclipse will offer advanced graphic features such as hardware-accelerated ray tracing, which simulates how light physically behaves in the real world inside the game, and variable rate shading, where shading rate in areas of the game can be lowered to optimise GPU workload.

Xclipse will also come with advanced multi-IP governor, a feature that manages power efficiency to reduce battery drain for high-resolution games, Samsung said.

AMD senior vice president of Radeon said Xclipse is “the first result of multiple planned generations of AMD RDNA graphics in Exynos SoCs.”

Meanwhile, Exynos 2200 also comes with an octacore CPU design that uses Arm’s new Armv9 CPU cores, which Samsung said have beefed up security and performance over Armv8 cores.

The CPU will have three clusters: The Cortex-X2 flagship core, three Cortex-A710 big core, and four Cortex-A510 little cores.

According to Samsung, Exynos 2200 will also offer upgraded on-device AI thanks to a new neural processing unit (NPU) that has double the performance of its predecessor. The NPU can be used with the image signal processor to support the taking of more realistic pictures with the camera. The image signal processor supports 108MP in single camera mode, and offers 4K HDR and 8K video recordings.

Exynos 2200 also comes with a 5G modem that meets 3GPP Release 16 standard and supports sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrum bands, as well as EN-DC that group 4G and 5G signals.
