CES 2022

The Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, is held every year in Las Vegas. CES 2022 doesn’t officially start until Wednesday, but the news is already trickling in. CES® 2022: The Countdown Is On. Over 2200 exhibitors are confirmed to exhibit in person at CES 2022. CES 2022 in-person exhibitor list had shrank lately with some big names getting out of in-person show, but there are still very many companies and on-line events.     Apple has announced the Mac Studio, a desktop system that looks like the Mac Mini on the outside but packs a lot more power on the inside. The Mac Studio features both Apple’s M1 Max chip and a new, even more powerful processor, the M1 Ultra. It looks a bit similar to the Mac Mini, but Apple claims that the new device will be faster than even its top-of-the-line Mac Pro.

    The chassis is 3.7 inches tall; Apple claims it “fits perfectly under most displays” and will remain quiet under heavy workloads. The rear includes four Thunderbolt 4 ports as well as a 10Gb Ethernet port, two USB-A ports, an HDMI, and an audio jack. It supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. The front includes two USB-C ports (10 Gbps on M1 Max systems, 40 Gbps/Thunderbolt 4 on M1 Ultra systems) and an SD card slot. The Mac Studio can support up to four Pro Display XDRs and a 4K TV, Apple says.

    Dumbphones are continuing to enjoy a revival. Google searches for them jumped by 89% between 2018 and 2021, according to a report by software firm SEMrush.

    And while sales figures are hard to come by, one report said that global purchases of dumbphones were due to hit one billion units last year, up from 400 million in 2019. This compares to worldwide sales of 1.4 billion smart phones last year, following a 12.5% decline in 2020.

    Meanwhile, a 2021 study by accountancy group Deloitte said that one in 10 mobile phone users in the UK had a dumbphone.

    “It appears fashion, nostalgia, and them appearing in TikTok videos, have a part to play in the dumbphone revival,” says Ernest Doku, mobiles expert at price comparison site Uswitch.com. “Many of us had a dumbphone as our first mobile phone, so it’s natural that we feel a sense of nostalgia towards these classic handsets.”

    It wasn’t too long ago that the phrase “OLED laptop” implied a luxury product. But, over the past few years, that tide has slowly begun to shift. Samsung has begun mass-producing OLED panels for more portable form factors. And while they’re still not exactly commonplace, we’ve begun to see sub-$1,000 OLED devices trickle onto shelves.

    But Acer made an announcement today that should make folks who want to see more affordable, accessible OLED (like myself) very excited. The Acer Swift 3 — hailed by many outlets, The Verge included, as one of the best student laptops on the market — is getting an OLED screen. This doesn’t sound like one of those cheaper FHD OLEDs you sometimes find on ultraportables, either. It’s going to have 2.8K resolution and cover 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut, by Acer’s estimate.

    You did indeed read that correctly. Two products revealed today, the SpatialLabs View and SpatialLabs View Pro, are standalone external monitors with 15.6-inch, 4K displays with glasses-free stereoscopic 3D technology. We’ve seen this tech from Acer before when it debuted in ConceptD notebooks where it was meant for designers, but never in this format.

    Distinguishing these two monitors is their audience; the standard model is meant for entertainment (watching movies, gaming, etc) whereas the Pro edition is for commercial users. For the former, SpatialLabs TrueGame is a portal for playing games in 3D. The app gives each of the 50 or so 3D-compatible games a pre-configured profile so gamers can feel more immersed. The list of games that Acer shared by email includes some big titles like Forza Horizon 5, God of War, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

    To use it, gamers need to launch the app then go to the game they want to play and press “play.” That’s it! The app does the rest, automatically launching the game file while activating its associated TrueGame 3D profile so it can boot in Stereoscopic 3D mode. It’s not just games, though. With SpatialLabs Go, you can turn just about anything into a 3D image, including photos and videos taken on your device. And designers can use plug-ins to render creations into stereoscopic 3D so the digital versions appear closer to the physical product.

    I haven’t seen these monitors in person, so I can’t say whether the 3D effect is convincing or a gimmick. What I do know is that the 15.6-inch, 3820 x 2160-pixel IPS monitors have a 60Hz refresh rate, an internal battery, and USB and HDMI 2.0 ports. Acer says they can cover 100% of the sRGB color gamut and reach 323 nits of brightness. Keep in mind that these weigh 3.3 pounds, making them considerably heavier than non-3D options.

    Milanon julkistustilaisuuden pääuutuuksiin lukeutuivat Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro, Watch D, S-Tag, Band 7 ja Watch Fit -älylaitteet. Tilaisuudessa esiteltiin Eurooppaan myös Huawein taittuvanäyttöinen Mate Xs 2 -älypuhelin sekä yhtiön Health-terveyssovellus ja pienikokoinen 9-akselinen liikeanturimoduuli.

    OnePlus esitteli eilen uuden Nord 2T -puhelimen kyljessä uudet Nord Buds -kuulokkeet. Niiden ominaisuudet ja hinta vakuuttavat. Itse asiassa napit saavat kysymään, kuinka paljon tällaisista kuulokkeista kannattaa ylipäätään maksaa.

    Viime talvena tuli kahteen otteeseen autettua nuoria etsimään AirPodseja lumesta. Epätoivo näkyi nuorten silmistä, kun yhtä kallista kuuloketta etsittiin urakalla. Toinen etsintä päättyi onneksi onnellisesti, toinen joutui pettymään. Mutta mahtoiko AirPodinsa hukannut ostaa uudet samanlaiset tilalle, vai ehkäpä jotkut edullisemmat?

    Nappikuulokkeiden kohdalla puhutaan usein äänenlaadusta tai vastamelutoiminnoista, koodekkituesta, Bluetooth-linkin vasteesta ja kaiutinelementin koosta. Tämä on oikeastaan kaikki akateemista. Jos olet hifisti, et kuuntele musiikkia napeista vaan laadukkaista kuulokkeista tai Geneleceistä. Nappi on jo fyysisesti ja mekaanisesti huono väline minkäänlaisen dynamiikan välittämiseen. Jos musiikinkuuntelu perustuu vielä söhröön Spotify-striimiin, sitä ei hifiksi muuteta millään napeilla, oli niiden kyljessä mikä tahansa logo.

    Nappikuulokkeiden ylivoimaisesti tärkein ominaisuus on napin istuvuus kunkin omaan korvaan. Jos nappi istuu tiukasti, nykyisillä elementeillä saa koiralenkille tai salille aivan riittävän bassotoiston. Lentokoneen melun suodattaminen vaatii toki vastamelutoimintoa, mutta kaikkialla muualla mikrofonien määrän lisääminen ajaa asiansa.

    Näin on myös uusissa Nord Budseissa. Niissä on yhteensä 4 mikrofonia, jotka suodattavat ei-toivotun taustamelun puheluiden aikana.

Nyt tarjolla on monia hyviä vaihtoehtoja: Huawein FreeBuds 4 -napit saa 149 eurolla, jos muotoiltu malli miellyttää ja kumitutillisiin on tarjolla OnePlussan uudet Nord Budsit vain 49 eurolla. Molemmat perustuvat vanhaan tekniikkaan, sillä nappikuulokkeissa on alkamassa vallankumous.

    Vallankumous perustuu mikrosähkömekaanisiin järjestelmiin eli MEMS-pohjaiseen kaiuttimeen. MEMS-kaiutin on piistä valmistettu mekaaninen elementti, jossa pietsosähköinen kalvo värähtelee ja tuottaa äänen. Tekniikalla on muutamia ylivertaisia etuja nappikuulokkeissa.

    Ensinnäkin MEMS-kaiuttimet ovat pieniä. Ne voidaan istuttaa piirilevylle vahvistimen viereen niin, että ratkaisu on selvästi nykyisiä pienempi. MEMS-mikrofoni kuluttaa vähemmän virtaa, mikä on iso asia pieneen akkuun perustuvissa laitteissa. Tehonkulutus on itse asiassa vain murto-osa, joten laitevalmistaja saa lisää pelivaraa tehobudjettiinsa.

    MEMS-kaiuttimen taajuusalue on tyypillisesti laaja (20 Hz – 20 kHz). Harmonin särö jää erittäin pieneksi (tyypillisesti prosentin osia). Sanalla sanoen, nykyistä pienemmällä komponentilla saadaan toteutettua enemmän tehoa ja kirkkaampaa ääntä pienemmällä tehonkulutuksella.

    Imagine: A quality pair of wireless earbuds that costs less than a nice dinner for two.

    That’s what OnePlus is promising with the newest addition to its audio lineup, the $40 OnePlus Nord Buds. No, you don’t need to clean your glasses. They really cost just 40 bones. That’s absurdly cheap for wireless earbuds, but naturally, that means you’ll need to accept some compromises. You won’t find active noise cancellation or a huge suite of customization features here.

    But what you will find is a pair of earbuds that doesn’t care what the price tag says. The OnePlus Nord Buds may not hit your bank account very hard, but they don’t pull punches anywhere else.

    These earbuds are shockingly comfortable, holding up to listening sessions of four hours or more without becoming irritating. Even without a physical ear stabilizer, they hardly threaten to come out, either.

    Speaking of pairing, the initial setup phase for the Nord Buds is a little odd, depending on which Android device you use. Standard Android phones like the Pixel 6 need to go through the HeyMelody app on the Play Store. OnePlus 9 or older owners need to use the OnePlus Buds app for the same features, while OnePlus 9 Pro or 10 Pro users need to download a “Wireless Earphones” app from the Play Store, at which point you’ll be able to adjust Nord Buds settings in the phone’s Bluetooth menu.

    It’s a deeply strange way to do things, but as long as you know which app you need, it’s something you’ll probably only have to worry about once. I was able to test the Nord Buds on a OnePlus 10 Pro, and the settings are fairly sparse. You can download firmware updates, remap the touch controls, and adjust some basic equalizer settings if you don’t like the default sound output. There’s also a “Find My Buds” button that will play a loud noise from a lost earbud, which is always nice to have.

    I should also note that iOS users won’t get access to any of the above. You can pair the Nord Buds to an iPhone via Bluetooth, but you won’t be able to tinker with any settings or download updates. Overall, I can’t complain too much about a $40 pair of earbuds that offers any customization whatsoever. Most people will never need more than the ability to find lost earbuds or download updates.

    It should go without saying that you really shouldn’t expect fantastic audio quality or snazzy features like ANC from earbuds this cheap. If you want those things, go buy the Beats Fit Pro. However, for such a modest price, the OnePlus Nord Buds deliver as much as you could possibly expect.

    Sure, the bass doesn’t hit very hard, and sure, at high volumes in loud outdoor environments, the audio can sound a little tinny. But if your life revolves around quiet offices and lonely walks like mine largely does, that’s not a dealbreaker. Obviously, you’ll need to pause your music on the subway platform because there’s no ANC, but it needs to be repeated: These cost $40.

    While the audio quality sits well within the expectations for such cheap earbuds, the unambiguous winner of the whole package is the battery life. OnePlus rates the Nord Buds for seven hours of listening time on a full charge, with the charging case giving you up to 30 hours in total.

    This is the secret success of the Nord Buds. By eschewing high-dollar features, these earbuds are able to focus on what really matters to most non-audiophiles: The ability to listen to songs or podcasts without constant recharging.

    Leica has previously partnered with Huawei to help tune and enhance the Mate and P-series smartphones. However, with Huawei still facing sanctions and difficulties in Western markets, Xiaomi has moved to secure a partnership with Leica on upcoming devices. The German photography firm has also partnered with a number of other brands including Sharp with the recent Japan-only Aquos line.

    The announcement teases a new device coming in July, which is expected to be the follow-up to the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra. No further details were shared about the actual device in question, which is likely to be the Xiaomi 12 Ultra. However, the recently teased Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chipset would be a likely candidate as one of the core internals for a device worthy of following on from the impressive Mi 11 Ultra.

    Ampere on Intelin entisen johtajan Renee Jamesin vuonna 2017 perustama yritys. Tähän asti sen Arm-pohjaisia Altra-piirejä on käytetty ainakin Oraclen ja Microsoftin datakeskuksissa. Nyt James lupaa uutta, 5 nanometrin prosessissa valmistettavaa AmpereOne-perhettä. Siinä Arm-ytimet ovat jo kustomoituja.

    Ampere ei niinkään kisaa suurimmasta mahdollisesta suorituskyvystä palvelinkorteilla, vaan sen ydinosaamista on kymmenien, erittäin vähävirtaisten ydinten ahtaminen samalle piirille. AmpereOne-sarjan prosessoreilla Ampere kustomoi ytimet, eli se tekee saman palvelinprosessoreille minkä Apple on tehnyt omille läppärien ja älypuhelimien Arm-prosessoreilleen.

    Amperen suurin piiri on ollut 128 ytimen Altra Max, jota yhtiö on toimittant asiakkailleen viime vuodesta alkaen.

    Jamesin mukaan pilvinatiivien palvelujen kasvu tarkoittaa sitä, että niiden prosessointi x86-prosessoreilla kasvattaisi datakeskusten tehonkulutuksen kaksinkertaiseksi. Myös konesalien vaatima pinta-ala kasvaisi puolitoistakertaiseksi. Ampere-prosessoreilla voitaisiin vuoteen 2025 mennessä kaksinkertaistaa pilvinatiivi laskentakapasiteetti pienemmällä virrankulutuksella ja lattiapinta-alalla kuin nykyisin, James hehkuttaa.

    Though primarily a software-focused event, Apple’s WWDC keynotes are often stage for an interesting hardware announcement or two as well, and this year Apple did not disappoint. At the company’s biggest Mac-related keynote of the year, Apple unveiled the M2, their second-generation Apple Silicon SoC for the Mac (and iPad) platform. Touting modest performance gains over the original M1 SoC of around 18% for multithreaded CPU workloads and 35% in peak GPU workloads, the M2 is Apple’s first chance to iterate on their Mac SoC to incorporate updated technologies, as well as to refresh their lower-tier laptops in the face of recent updates from their competitors.

    With the king of the M1 SoCs, M1 Ultra, not even 3 months behind them, Apple hasn’t wasted any time in preparing their second generation of Apple Silicon SoCs. To that end, the company has prepared what is the first (and undoubtedly not the last) of a new family of SoCs with the Apple Silicon M2. Designed to replace the M1 within Apple’s product lineup, the M2 SoC is being initially rolled out in refreshes of the 13-inch MacBook Pro, as well as the MacBook Air – which is getting a pretty hefty redesign of its own in the process.

    The launch of the M2 also gives us our first real glimpse into how Apple is going to handle updates within the Apple Silicon ecosystem. With the iPhone family, Apple has kept to a yearly cadence for A-series SoC updates; conversely, the traditional PC ecosystem is on something closer to a 2-year cadence as of late. M2 seems to split this down the middle, coming about a year and a half after the original M1 – though in terms of architecture it looks closer to a yearly A-series SoC update.

    According to Apple, the new SoC is comprised of roughly 20 billion transistors, which is 4B (25%) more than the original M1 – and 5B more than the A15 SoC. The chip is being made on what Apple terms a “second generation 5nm” process, which we believe is likely TSMC’s N5P line, the same line used for the A15 SoC. N5P offers improved performance characteristics versus N5, but not density improvements. So while Apple doesn’t disclose die sizes, the company’s side-by-side die shots are at least accurate in that M2 is going to be a bigger chip than M1.

    With regards to performance, Apple is saying that the M2 offers 18% improved multi-threaded CPU performance versus the M1. The company does not offer a breakdown of clockspeeds versus IPC gains

    AMD’s latest servers include a suite of four families that target the cloud as well as edge server computing. AMD’s Dan McNamara presents this new platform in the video that’s summarized here.

    The new families are code-named Genoa, Bergamo, Genoa-X, and Siena (Fig. 1). The latter targets edge computing with a lower core count, but it has lower power requirements as well. They’re all based on AMD’s latest 5-nm, Zen 4 core that’s also used on mobile and desktop processors. One of the main differences is the server chips have more bandwidth and cores along with acceleration that suits server applications.

    Genoa pushes bandwidth and cloud flexibility with Compute Express Link (CXL) support for memory (Fig. 2). CXL allows for aggregation of memory and storage so that it can be allocated across the cloud. It’s based on PCI Express (PCIe) and the chips support PCIe Gen 5. Direct access memory is handled via a dozen DDR5 channels. It supports up to 96 Zen 4 cores.

    Bergamo takes a slightly different approach to the cloud with up to 128 Zen 4C cores. The Zen 4C has the same microarchitecture as the Zen 4, but it’s optimized for size and power. Bergamo is fully compatible with the the other Zen cores.

    We will have to wait until 2023 for Genoa-X and Siena, which is too bad for embedded developers because the Siena looks very interesting for server-based edge and telecommunications applications (Fig. 4).
