The year 2021 was strange, you can read more of it from A 2021 technology retrospective: Strange days indeed. But how strange will 2022 be? Here are some predictions for year 2022:
2022 preview: Will the global computer chip shortage ever end?
The growing demand for computer chips, used in everything from cars to fridges, has collided with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, leading to a global shortage that is likely to continue through 2022

Industry Transforming In Ways Previously Unimaginable
https://semiengineering.com/industry-transforming-in-ways-previously-unimaginable/?cmid=3dedf05d-0284-497a-b015-daf7747872e6
As we look back over 2021, there have certainly been some surprises, but the industry continues to take everything in its stride.
2022 tech themes: A look ahead
https://www.edn.com/2022-tech-themes-a-look-ahead/
The continued COVID-19 question mark: The world quickly and dramatically changed. It hasn’t yet reverted to pre-pandemic characteristics, and it very likely never will. Sad but true, the pandemic isn’t even close to being over yet.
Deep learning’s Cambrian moment: Look at today’s participant-rich deep learning silicon and software market, spanning both training and inference.
The ongoing importance of architecture: As the number of transistors that it’s possible to cost-effectively squeeze onto a sliver of silicon continues to slow, what you build out of those transistors becomes increasingly critical.
Open source processors’ time in the sun: There is a burgeoning RISC-V movement. It’s likely a little-known fact to some of you, that a public domain instruction set for v2 and earlier versions of the Arm ISA exists. And both Sun (with OpenSPARC) and IBM (OpenPOWER) have also joined the open-source silicon movement.
The normalization of remote work (and the “Great Resignation’s” aftershocks): I suspect that, to at least a notable degree, we won’t ever completely return to the “way it was before.” In fact, I’d wager that having a taste of a work-from-home or “hybrid” employment lifestyle is one of the key factors behind the so-called “Great Resignation” that tech and broader media alike inform me is well underway.
The metaverse starts to stir: Perhaps we’ll look back at 2022 as the year when the crossing of the chasm started in earnest.
Autonomy slowly accelerates: 2021 was another year filled with fully autonomous car tests and premature “coming soon” pronouncements; 2022 will likely be the same.
Batteries get ever denser, ever more plentiful, and ever cheaper
Space travel becomes commonplace
Global semiconductor industry forecasts for 2022
https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20211229VL205.html
“2021 is the year that everyone remembered that chip mattered,” said Wired Magazine. So far 2022 seems likely to be another fruitful year for the semiconductor industry.
World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) also has predicted that the global semiconductor market is projected to grow by 8.8 percent in 2022, to US$ 601 billion, driven by double-digit growth of the sensors and logic category. All regions and all product categories are expected to continue positive growth. Wafer foundry manufacturers sales likely to remain strong due to tight supply. 5G smartphone silicon content increase to drive demand for foundry service higher. Demand for digital transformation is here to stay, no sign of weakening for foundry service sales.
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated digital transformation over the past two years. Work from home, virtual conference, and remote learning have driven up the demand for cloud computing, laptops, and servers, and hence the sales growth of related semiconductor products. Demands for CPU, GPU, AI accelerator (including FPGA) foundry services will remain strong in 2022 because trends such as virtual conferences, live streaming, and large capex of data centers are likely to stay. Long-term demands for customized chips in IoT, 5G infrastructure, HPC, and EV applications, like ADAS, autonomous driving, V2X, in-Vehicle Infotainment, will provide robust growth momentum for chip foundry services.
Chip crunch is not ending in 2022, as the lead time of some electronic components is stretching into 2023. Meanwhile, the increasing adoption of RISC-V open standard instruction set architecture is an important trend that can not be ignored. RISC-V market will double its size in 2022, compared to 2021, as it is attracting small and medium-size chip designers and manufacturers, especially those in China. RISC-V designs are now being used by Qualcomm, Samsung, Google, Microchip, Nvidia, and more.

The size of a standard mobile phone charger can be reduced by up to 40 percent when using GaN components or it can be designed to produce more power in the same size. GaN chargers are becoming the most popular charger technology for billions of devices, so it’s no wonder that European semiconductor giant STMicroelectronics is also excited about them.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine [USN:L1N2UZ089] by land, air and sea risks reverberating across the global chip industry and exacerbating current supply-chain constraints. Ukraine is a major producer of neon gas critical for lasers used in chipmaking and supplies more than 90% of U.S. semiconductor-grade neon, according to estimates from research firm Techcet. About 35% of palladium, a rare metal also used for semiconductors, is sourced from Russia. A full-scale conflict disrupting exports of these elements might hit players like Intel , which gets about 50% of its neon from Eastern Europe according to JPMorgan.
The pain won’t fall evenly. ASML (ASML.AS), which supplies machines to semiconductor makers, sources less than 20% of the gases it uses from the crisis-hit countries. Companies may turn to China, the United States and Canada to boost supplies, says JPMorgan. But this may be a slow path. Although the chipmaking industry was able to manage an increase in neon prices stemming from the 2014 Crimean crisis, the scale of today’s conflict looks much larger. (By Lisa Jucca)

Samsungin uutuusläppärit näyttävät, miten vaikea markkina on
https://etn.fi/index.php/13-news/13231-samsungin-uutuuslaeppaerit-naeyttaevaet-miten-vaikea-markkina-on
Samsung esitteli eilen illalla uudet Galaxy Book 2 -sarjan kannettavat tietokoneensa.

GlobalFoundries this week reported a 74% surge in sales in the fourth quarter, driven by strong demand for radio-frequency ICs, power-management ICs, microcontrollers, image sensors, and other chips amid the chip crunch.
The largest U.S.-based contract chip manufacturer, GlobalFoundries said that sales in the fourth quarter last year came to $1.85 billion, up from $1.06 billion a year ago. Demand for the legacy chips it builds for other companies is still outstripping its ability to supply them. Executives warned that there are no short-term fixes for the shortfall and it could take years for the industry to finally close the supply-demand gap.
The company’s sales are expected to be $1.88 billion to $1.92 billion for the first quarter, ending in March.
GlobalFoundries is in the eye of a global chip shortage that has caused delivery delays and production snags in many sectors, including the auto industry, which has been ravaged by a scarcity of microcontrollers and other components for more than a year now.

TSMC Approves $21 Billion For Chip Production As Potential For 2nm Production Expansion Opens
https://wccftech.com/tsmc-approves-21-billion-for-chip-production-as-potential-for-2nm-production-expansion-opens/
The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has approved more capital expenditures in order to expand its chip fabrication capacity. TSMC is the world’s largest contract semiconductor manufacturer, and the company is now facing competition from U.S. chip giant Intel Corporation who also plans to enter the market. Intel saw its cash flows drop last year as it committed billions of dollars to build new plants. With today’s approval, TSMC has allocated a little over half of its fiscal year 2022 capital expenditure which the company announced at its latest earnings call held last month.
TSMC’s Second 2nm Chip Plant In Taiwan’s Taichung Sector Sees Potential Open For Expansion
The race between Intel and TSMC is currently focused on developing the 2-nanometer (nm) chip manufacturing technology. TSMC and the foundry arm of South Korean chaebol Samsung Electronics, Samsung Foundry, will both enter 3nm production later this year, and Intel is believed to be sourcing some parts for its semiconductor products from the Taiwanese firm.
At the same time, the U.S. manufacturer is ramping up its semiconductor production after Intel announced an updated technology map early last year. This map renamed Intel’s manufacturing technologies to bring them at par with TSMC’s products in terms of key metrics such as feature size and transistor density.
One of these processes, dubbed by Intel as 20A, will directly compete with TSMC’s 2nm process. 20A is slated to enter early production in the second half of 2024, while TSMC expects its corresponding process technology to enter mass production in 2025. Intel’s Intel 4 process, thought to lie somewhere in between TSMC’s 5nm and 3nm nodes, will enter production in the latter half of this year with products slated to ship in 2023.

Samsung Loses Qualcomm as a Customer, TSMC to Mass Produce the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, With Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus to Follow
https://wccftech.com/samsung-loses-qualcomm-snapdragon-8-gen-1-orders-to-tsmc/
Qualcomm’s patience may have run thin with Samsung because the San Diego firm has reportedly sided with TSMC as far as Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 orders go. This also means that the Taiwanese manufacturer will mass produce the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus.
Samsung’s Yield Rate Was at 35 Percent, Meaning out of 100 Chips, Only 35 of Them Were Usable, While the Remaining Were Defected
Qualcomm was earlier reported to have wanted a partnership with TSMC because Samsung’s 4nm process had a terrible 35 percent yield rate. If you do basic maths, out of 100 chips, 65 of them were defective, which would not have made it feasible for Qualcomm. TSMC, on the other hand, is faring exceptionally well with its own 4nm version, with a previous rumor claiming that it has over a 70 percent yield rate.
With those kinds of yields, it makes partnering with TSMC a no-brainer deal for Qualcomm, though it is not confirmed if TSMC will charge a premium for its services.
In short, Qualcomm will be given access to a more superior 4nm process, and there is excellent news for customers in the future. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus is said to arrive much earlier and will be mass produced on TSMC’s 4nm architecture too. Apparently, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will be replaced by a more powerful version, and several smartphones, including the upcoming Lenovo Halo, will reportedly arrive with it.
Qualcomm may continue to use Samsung’s 4nm tech for a small percentage of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 orders

In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the White House has instructed the U.S. Commerce Department, through its Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), to impose restrictions on the export of technology, including telecommunications systems and lasers, to Russia. The restrictions are intended to shut off Russia’s defense, aerospace, and maritime sectors from critical technology developed in the U.S. or that use components made in the U.S. The European Union and five other countries are expected to impose similar sanctions.
As was the case with ZTE and Huawei previously, certain organizations within the Russian defense ecosystem have been placed on the Entity List (see “U.S. Commerce Dept. finds ZTE violated export disciplinary agreement, bans U.S. component supply” and “Huawei faces U.S. technology access ban”). Placement on the list requires that special licenses be obtained for items developed in the U.S. as well as foreign items produced using U.S. equipment, software, and blueprints before they can be sent to these Russian entities. Instructions for filing for such licenses state that the parties involved should assume such license requests will be denied.
The Commerce Department has imposed restrictions on Russian access to semiconductors, computers, telecommunications technology, information security equipment, lasers, and sensors.
Concurrently, BIS added 49 Russian military end-user organizations to its Entity List.
In addition to the EU, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand have agreed to adopt similar sanctions. The Commerce Department said via a release that it expects other countries to follow suit.

The arguments against DIY are all strong. If you just want to spin up a static website, you can do it for free in a bazillion different places. GitHub’s Pages is super convenient, and your content is version controlled as a side benefit. If you want an IoT-type data-logging and presentation service, there are tons of those as well — I don’t have a favorite. If you want e-mail, well, I don’t have to tell you that a large American search monopoly offers free accounts, for the low price of slurping up all of your behavioral data. Whatever your need, chances are very good that there’s a service for you out there somewhere in the cloud.

TSMC R&D SVP Expects Chip Shortage to Persist Until 2024-2025
https://www.techpowerup.com/292492/tsmc-r-d-svp-expects-chip-shortage-to-persist-until-2024-2025
In an interview with IEEE Spectrum Dr. Y.J. Mii, Senior Vice President of Research and Development at TSMC, said that he believes that we’re not going to see an end to the chip shortage until the next generation of fabs that are currently under construction, or will commence soon, come online in two to three years. Interestingly, Mii is apparently not putting the blame squarely at the pandemic as so many others have for the components shortage, but rather points towards the fact that chips are being used in just about every kind of product these days. This has in turn led to much higher demands for semiconductors, without the infrastructure to manufacture enough of them being in place.
He also believes the industry as a whole missed the fact that the demand for a wide range of semiconductors was growing as quickly as it has been over the past few years.

Uudessa realme-puhelimessa maailman nopein lataus
https://etn.fi/index.php/13-news/13245-uudessa-realme-puhelimessa-maailman-nopein-lataus
Miltä kuulostaisi älypuhelin, jonka akun saisi ladattua puolilleen viidessä minuutissa? Sellaista esitellään jo Barcelonan mobiilimessuilla. Asialla on realme ja sen uusi GT Neo 3 -malli, jota voidaan ladata 150 watin teholla. Laturin elektroniikan on kehittänyt Navitas Semiconductor.
Navitas tunnetaan galliumnitridipohjaisen tehoelektroniikan pioneerina. MWC-messuilla esillä oleva 150 watin laturi on kuitenkin tähän asti nopein markkinoilla.
Dimensity 8100 -prosessorilla toimiva realme GT Neo 3 sisältää teholtaan 150-wattisen laturin, jolle valmistaja on antanut nimeksi UltraDart. Navitaksen GaNFast-virtapiirien ympärille rakennetun 150 watin laturin ansiosta käyttäjät voivat hyödyntää tätä tekniikkaa lataamalla puhelimen 4 500 milliampeeritunnin akun 50 prosenttiin vain 5 minuutissa. Laturi on mitoiltaan 58 x 58 x 30 millimetriä, joten sen tehotiheys on ennätyksellinen 1,5 wattia kuutiosenttiä kohti.

Russia’s War in Ukraine Could Spur Another Global Chip Shortage
Ukraine is home to half of the world’s neon gas, which is critical for manufacturing semiconductor chips.
https://www.wired.com/story/ukraine-chip-shortage-neon/
There are concerns that the US is even more vulnerable. Last week, the White House urged US chipmakers to find alternative suppliers, Reuters reported. “We see huge amounts of imports coming into the US from [Russia and Ukraine],” says TechCet’s Shon-Roy. “It is my educated assessment that what’s coming into the US from Russia and Ukraine could be as much as 80 to 90 percent of all [neon] imports.” US chipmaker Intel did not respond to a request for comment.
If Ukraine’s neon exports flag, the chip shortage will get worse
https://qz.com/2134896/if-ukraines-neon-exports-flag-the-chip-shortage-will-get-worse/
Ukraine produces around 70% of global neon gas exports, and a purified version of that gas is so crucial to the semiconductor industry that the Russia-Ukraine war threatens to disrupt supplies and make the ongoing microchip shortage even worse.
Chip manufacturers employ lasers to etch hyperfine circuit patterns onto wafers of silicon. The lasers work by exciting the atoms of noble gases to generate light in specific wavelengths, and neon often makes up 95% or more of the laser’s gaseous contents. The neon has to be refined to a 99.999% purity for this purpose—a niche process that very few plants in the world carry out.
Among these is Iceblick, a 32-year-old company in Odessa that supplies 65% of the world’s neon.

Russian invasion of Ukraine to further strain U.S. chip supply for auto, tech industries

Russia’s attack on Ukraine could push up prices of already in-demand goods, such as cars, phones, and computers.
The conflict’s potential reach could also ripple out and affect staples such as bread. Ukraine is the world’s largest exporter of wheat, and together Ukraine and Russia account for a quarter of global wheat exports.
Already weak supply chains are in danger of further disruption, said Jason Pride, chief investment officer for private wealth with Philadelphia-based Glenmede Trust, which oversees $46 billion in investments.
“Our expectation was that we’d see market volatility. But a lot of the price increases will be passed on to the consumer,” he said. That includes cell phone makers and auto manufacturers already struggling to find semiconductor chips for their factories.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could further strain supplies of semiconductor chips amid a shortage that has already caused global production disruptions for tech companies and automakers for more than a year.
Russia and Ukraine are critical suppliers of neon gas and palladium that are used to produce semiconductor chips.
The White House earlier this month warned chip suppliers to diversify their supply chains in case Russia retaliates against threatened U.S. export curbs by blocking access to key materials.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could further strain supplies of semiconductor chips amid a shortage that has already caused global production disruptions for tech companies and automakers for more than a year.
Russia and Ukraine are critical sources of neon gas and palladium that are used to produce semiconductor chips, according to officials.
The U.S. neon supply, which is used for lithography processes for chip production, comes almost entirely from Ukraine and Russia, according to Techcet, a California-based market research firm that specializes in critical supply chain materials and components.

The Briefing: It’s Not All About State-of-the-Art Chips Anymore

Some of the world’s largest chip makers are trying to tackle the great chip shortage with a raft of new investments in legacy and specialty technologies.
https://www.electronicdesign.com/technologies/embedded-revolution/media-gallery/21234515/electronic-design-the-briefing-its-not-all-about-stateoftheart-chips-anymore?utm_source=EG%20ED%20Analog%20%26%20Power%20Source&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=CPS220224023&o_eid=7211D2691390C9R&rdx.ident%5Bpull%5D=omeda%7C7211D2691390C9R&oly_enc_id=7211D2691390C9R
Not all components are equally hard to find amid the global chip shortage.
Intel, TSMC, Samsung, and other chip giants are investing tens of billions of dollars to add more capacity for chips on state-of-the-art technologies, such as the 5- and 7-nm nodes, which have remained widely available. But consumer electronics firms and car manufacturers are struggling to get their hands on microcontrollers and other chips based on 28, 90 nm, or other mature nodes that handle chores such as power management.
Most industry analysts and executives warn the chip shortage will not ease before the second half of 2022, largely due to lagging production of these so-called legacy chips, which frequently cost less than a dollar.
Even though the equipment for making legacy chips costs a fraction of state-of-the-art machines today, companies tend not to invest as aggressively in building new production capacity for these types of chips.
One of the factors is that these chips are closer to obsolescence. The sector also tends to go through cycles, swinging from gluts that can last for years to shortages, such as the one that has ravaged the world for the last year. The risk is that by the time a semiconductor fab starts production in a few years, the demand that pushed the company to build it will have waned, leaving the fab underused.
That has created a scenario where only a fraction of the industry’s capital spending—only about $1 out of every $6, according to market research firm Gartner—is addressing the chips facing the longest backlogs.

How Russia’s Attack on Ukraine is Impacting Supply Chains
March 1, 2022
A look at how the crisis in Ukraine could impact the world’s supply chains.
https://www.sourcetoday.com/supply-chain/article/21234916/how-russias-attack-on-ukraine-is-impacting-supply-chains
Highly interconnected, the world’s supply chains are susceptible to shocks and disruptions that may not even happen in close proximity to the actual manufacturing, sourcing or distribution of goods. This was immediately obvious when China’s manufacturing centers were among the earliest to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, and it could happen again as the Russia-Ukraine conflict persists.
In “The Russia Ukraine War Could Have Dire Impacts On Global Supply Chains,” ARC Advisory Group’s Steve Banker writes about the diverse ways that this conflict could impact global supply chains. Some of the key impacts could include (but aren’t limited to) higher transportation costs, rising electricity rates and interruptions to the commodity supply chains that companies worldwide rely on.
“While rising gas prices drive up the price of transportation, rising natural gas prices also affect global supply chains,” Banker writes. “Natural gas has become increasingly important in generating electricity. In the US, for example, natural gas accounted for 40% of total utility-scale U.S. electricity generation in 2020.”
He says that rising electricity prices can cut into the profits of manufacturers, distributors and retailers who rely on this form of energy to power their facilities. “Energy cost increases, in turn, often lead these companies to raise their prices,” Banker adds. “This is particularly true in Europe, where Russia is the largest provider of natural gas to Europe, providing about 35% of its supply.”

Standardin kehitystä ajavan konsortion nimeksi on tullut Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express eli UCIe.

Huawein FTTR-ratkaisu vastaa muun muassa näihin haasteisiin.
