Oppenheimer and the resurgence of Blu-ray and DVDs: How to stop your films and music from disappearing
    https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20240102-oppenheimer-and-the-resurgence-of-blu-ray-and-dvds-were-now-in-the-age-of-streaming-anxiety

In an era where many films and albums are stored in the cloud, “streaming anxiety” is making people buy more DVDs and records – as younger digital generations fear having their life histories erased.

Deep into the streaming era, where physical media can sometimes feel like a distant memory, the Blu-ray home video release of Nolan’s Oppenheimer – one of 2023′s biggest box office success stories – sparked a buying frenzy.

The 4K Ultra HD version of Oppenheimer sold out in its first week at major retailers, including Amazon. Universal released a statement saying they were working to replenish stock as quickly as possible. Some limited edition copies were fetching more than $200 on eBay. It was a sign that, for some people at least, nothing beats that feeling of holding a copy of something you love in your hand or seeing it on your shelf.

Perhaps it’s not that surprising. If anyone can inspire fervour over a release – in any format – it’s Nolan, and the DVD and Blu-ray release includes three hours of bonus footage. Then there’s the fact that, prior to its release, Nolan himself encouraged fans to embrace “a version you can buy and own at home and put on a shelf so no evil streaming service can come steal it from you”.

Korttimaksaminen muuttui – Älä hämmenny tästä pyynnöstä kassalla
Lähimaksun käyttöön kauppojen kassoilla tuli voimaan muutos 1. tammikuuta 2024. Korttia ei enää tarvitse syöttää laitteeseen edes yli 50 euron ostoksissa. Muutos ei kuitenkaan tarkoita, ettei PIN-koodia enää tarvittaisi.

    https://etn.fi/index.php/13-news/15746-eda-alalla-jaerkyttaevae-yrityskauppa-35-miljardia-dollaria

The floppy disk refused to die in Japan – laws that forced the continued use of floppies have finally hit the chopping block
    News

Officials won’t ask for CD media either.
    https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/storage/the-floppy-disk-refuses-to-die-in-japan-laws-that-forced-the-continued-use-of-floppies-have-finally-hit-the-chopping-block

Floppy disks can finally make their way across the digital equivalent of the River Styx and reach the land of eternal slumber. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has abolished any requirement for applicants to use this ancient clicking and buzzing magnetic media when filing official documents. Until last week there were about 1,900 official governmental application procedures that stipulated businesses must submit floppies or CD-ROMs (specifically) containing supplementary data.

The Japanese government indicated the floppy disk’s days were numbered back in August 2022. At the time a government minister openly mused “Where can you buy floppy disks these days?” He went on to tell reporters that the rules stipulating specific media to accompany official form submissions would be changed quickly.

Removing the necessity to be able to work with legacy removable storage formats like floppy disks (and CD-ROMs) from Japan’s bureaucracy will surely come as a relief to all concerned. IBM shipped the first floppy diskettes in 1973 – over 50 years ago. We don’t know when floppy disk mechanisms ceased production but Sony, the last floppy media maker, stopped making diskettes over a decade ago.
