AMD Quietly Funded A Drop-In CUDA Implementation Built On ROCm: It’s Now Open-Source
    https://www.phoronix.com/review/radeon-cuda-zluda

While there have been efforts by AMD over the years to make it easier to port codebases targeting NVIDIA’s CUDA API to run atop HIP/ROCm, it still requires work on the part of developers.

Over the past two years AMD has quietly been funding an effort though to bring binary compatibility so that many NVIDIA CUDA applications could run atop the AMD ROCm stack at the library level — a drop-in replacement without the need to adapt source code. In practice for many real-world workloads, it’s a solution for end-users to run CUDA-enabled software without any developer intervention.

    Intel Releases x86-simd-sort 5.0 With 4~5x Faster C++ Object Sorting Using AVX-512
    https://www.phoronix.com/news/x86-simd-sort-5.0

The x86-simd-sort 5.0 release introduces a new API to sort custom-defined C++ objects via object_qsort. This new sort support of custom C++ objects can be 4~5x faster than using std::sort on AVX-512 systems but ultimately the performance impact will vary based upon the custom class.

Analysts estimate that Microsoft Azure’s revenue, thanks in part to its close relationship with OpenAI, is ~75% as big as AWS’, up from ~50% five years ago — – Microsoft’s cloud is growing significantly faster than Amazon Web Services of late, thanks in part to its cozy OpenAI relationship.

Microsoft’s AI growth is helping its cloud business weaken Amazon’s lead
    https://www.cnbc.com/2024/02/12/microsoft-ai-growth-helping-azure-cloud-chip-away-at-amazons-lead.html

Microsoft’s cloud is growing significantly faster than Amazon Web Services of late, thanks in part to its cozy OpenAI relationship.
Analysts estimate Azure, which was about half as big as AWS five years ago, is now three-quarters its size.
Revenue at Azure increased 30% in the quarter, compared with 13% year-over-year growth at AWS.

Amazon Web Services is still the cloud leader. But Microsoft is quickly closing the gap.

While Microsoft doesn’t disclose revenue figures for its Azure cloud infrastructure, analyst figures suggest that five years ago it was half as big as AWS. Now, it’s about three-quarters the size of its top rival, analysts estimate.

In total, revenue at Azure increased 30% in the quarter, compared with 13% year-over-year growth at AWS.

Microsoft has been adding graphics processing units (GPUs) to its data centers so that clients can run AI models in Azure. That includes GPT-4, a large language model that enables text conversations with OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot. Many businesses have been adding similar generative AI capabilities to their products.

“We now have 53,000 Azure AI customers,” CEO Satya Nadella told analysts on the company’s earnings call.

AWS took months to come out with a model that could go up against GPT-4. The company is now offering a number of models in addition to its own, including one from Anthropic, which Amazon backed. On the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said that AWS offers “the most expansive collection of compute instances with Nvidia chips,” and that customers including Airbnb and Snap are using its homegrown AI processors.

As it stands now, Azure is growing much faster.

And as cloud infrastructure has become a bigger part of Microsoft, making up around 29% of the company’s total revenue, it’s also become a meaningful contributor of profit.

OnePlus haluaa osansa miljardin älykellon markkinasta
    https://etn.fi/index.php/13-news/15910-oneplus-haluaa-osansa-miljardin-aelykellon-markkinasta

Viimeiset kaksi vuotta älykellojen myynti on laskenut, mutta tälle vuodelle Canalys ennustaa neljän prosentin kasvua. Kaikkiaan kelloja myydään 1,17 miljardia ja puhelimistaan paremmin tunnettu OnePlus yrittää ottaa tästä markkinasta omansa. Helppoa se ei tule olemaan.

OnePlus Watch 2 on yhtiön toinen yritys markkinoille ja rehellisesti sanottuna ensimmäinen vakava. Kellossa on lähdetty nyt erottautumaan omilla ratkaisuilla ja samalla käyttöjärjestelmä on vaihdettu omasta Googlen Wear OS 4:een. Molemmat ratkaisut ovat fiksuja.

    https://etn.fi/index.php/13-news/15920-60-gigahertsin-langaton-linkki-korvaa-usb-kaapelit

Linkin yli voidaan siirtää dataa USB 2.0:sta tutulla 480 megabitin sekuntinopeudella, joten vauhti riittää moneen sovellukseen. Pitää muistaa, että yli gigabitin datansiirto on monissa laitteissa kaapeliteitsekin vasta suunnitteilla.

Unlicensed 60 GHz RF millimeter-wave band usage opens new opportunities for short-range contactless connectivity by enabling unprecedented multi-Gigabit data rates.

The ST60 RF Transceiver for the 60 GHz band provides a very power-efficient wireless link with a high data rate, eliminating the need for physical cables and connectors for short range (a few centimeters), point-to-point communications.

ST60 offers best-in-class wireless performance with transfer speeds up to 6.25 Gbps along with very low power consumption.

    https://etn.fi/index.php/13-news/15919-natriumakku-hakkaa-litiumakun-mennen-tullen
