1. Small language models and edge computing
Most of the attention this year and last has been on the big language models — specifically on ChatGPT in its various permutations, as well as competitors like Anthropic’s Claude and Meta’s Llama models. But for many business use cases, LLMs are overkill and are too expensive, and too slow, for practical use.

“But an AI agent can be instantly updated to ensure that all our work is compliant with the new laws,” says Malhotra. “This isn’t science fiction.”

Sure, AI agents are interesting. But things are going to get really interesting when agents start talking to each other, says Babak Hodjat, CTO of AI at Cognizant. It won’t happen overnight, of course, and companies will need to be careful that these agentic systems don’t go off the rails.

Humans and the companies we build are multi-modal. We read and write text, we speak and listen, we see and we draw. Diversifying away from using just a single model for all use cases means a company is less dependent on any one provider and can be more flexible as circumstances change.

Today, only the largest companies, with the deepest pockets, get to have custom software developed specifically for them. It’s just not economically feasible to build large systems for small use cases.
“Right now, people are all using the same version of Teams or Slack or what have you,” says Ernst & Young’s Malhotra. “Microsoft can’t make a custom version just for me.” But once AI begins to accelerate the speed of software development while reducing costs, it starts to become much more feasible.

In fact, there are already signs of cynicism as decision-makers are bombarded with marketing messages from vendors and struggle to discern what is a genuine use case and what is not relevant for their organization.

AI certainly won’t solve every problem, and it should be used like automation, as part of a collaborative mix of people, process and technology. You simply can’t replace human intuition with AI, and many new AI regulations stipulate that human oversight is maintained.

    “We started with the thesis that transformers are powerful computing building blocks, but if you put them in a more agentic environment, you can get much more out of them,” said Filev in an exclusive interview with VentureBeat. “By agentic, I mean two key things: first, giving the AI feedback so it can improve its work, and second, equipping it with tools. Just like human intelligence, AI becomes significantly more capable when it has the right tools at its disposal.”

    Several AI coding assistants have emerged in the past year, but Zencoder’s approach distinguishes itself by operating within existing workflows rather than requiring developers to switch platforms.

    In 1948, the founder of information theory, Claude Shannon, proposed modelling language in terms of the probability of the next word in a sentence given the previous words.     In 2022, 74 years after Shannon’s proposal, ChatGPT appeared, which caught the attention of the public, with some even suggesting it was a gateway to super-human intelligence.     With that mind, the CSAIL researchers have developed a new framework for understanding how representations form in neural networks. Their Canonical Representation Hypothesis (CRH) posits that, during training, neural networks inherently align their latent representations, weights, and neuron gradients within each layer. This alignment implies that neural networks naturally learn compact representations based on the degree and modes of deviation from the CRH.

    Senior author Tomaso Poggio says that, by understanding and leveraging this alignment, engineers can potentially design networks that are more efficient and easier to understand. The research is posted to the arXiv preprint server.

    As a favor to my mother-in-law, I explained the whole situation to OpenAI’s ChatGPT 4.5—the version of the company’s A.I. model that’s available on the “plus” and “pro” tiers and, for some tasks, is substantially better than the cheaper and free versions. The “pro” version, which costs two hundred dollars a month, includes a feature called “deep research,” which allows the A.I. to devote an extended period of time—as much as half an hour, in some cases—to doing research online and analyzing the results.

    I was impressed, and forwarded the report to my mother-in-law. A real-estate lawyer might have provided a better analysis, I thought—but not in three minutes, or for two hundred bucks. At the time, I was also asking ChatGPT to teach me about a scientific field I planned to write on; to help me set up an old computer so that my six-year-old could use it to program his robot; and, as an experiment, to write fan fiction based on a Profile I’d written of Geoffrey Hinton, the “godfather of A.I.” (“The reporter, Josh, had left earlier that day, waving from the departing boat. . . . ”)
